Mitch McGary Update

Submitted by BlueCube on

Sam Webb has an update on Mitch McGary on Go Blue Wolverine. It's a free link.

A lot of the same information, however it goes more into what he is doing in his workouts and how much he wants to get back to this team.

One interesting note was that Spike's older brother had the same surgery and gave him advice on things to do such as a lot of stretching and core work to strengthen the back.

You have to love the guy and how much he wants to be part of this team.

1.  This kid has really matured in a year.  He handles the repetitive annoying questions with the skill of an NBA veteran and doesn't roll his eyes at all.

"Are you going to play this year?"

"I really don't know."

"Would you like to?"

It's a stronger man than I who can refrain from saying "Seriously?" or "Clown question, bro."

2.  He's not even going to start jumping for another week, and even that sounds like baby jumps.  Maybe in a parallel universe he plays a few minutes in the tournament if we're up 50 on the final weekend, but not in this one.

but I heard (boring old white dude announcers whose names escape me) talking either early in the game yesterday or Friday talking about how Mitch is going to have a tough few months ahead of him, deciding whether or not to come back. I know the nba will take kindergarteners now, but do any of you think he's really that serious about bolting before ever playing another game in college? (in other words, someone please talk me off the ledge, thinking that we'll never see him play again...)

I understand that he's not getting any younger and his age is working against him, but his draft stock right now has to be pretty bad.  You have to think that if he comes back and puts up numbers like 14 pts 8 rbds, he'll be a late 1st rounder vs probably a mid 2nd rounder this year.

I think it's a coin-toss.

Assuming the doctors totally clear him and he's medically as close to 100% as he can be, if he goes pro and signs a middling contract for a middling round pick, there are two basic possibilities:

a) He truly is healthly and is one year further along in learning how to do NBA things with NBA people.

b) He never fully recovers and at least got paid with the first contract.

Assuming the doctors totally clear him and he's medically as close to 100% as he can be, if he stays at Michigan, again there are two basic possibilities:

a) He truly is healthy, goes on an unholy tear next year, and ends up a lottery pick (in what is projected to be a weak draft if NBA eligibility rules change).

b) He never fully recovers and at least worked toward getting his college degree (and danced on the bench).

So, I don't envy him the decision he has to make.  No matter what, I just hope he makes a full recovery and is successful in whatever he does.

I really think we're probably getting our hopes up for nothing.

I really hope I'm wrong.

I really hope he comes back next year either way.

Core work was critical for my back injury last year granted my back injury doesn't seem to have the severity of McGary's.  Funny enough, the injury was due to rec league basketball and high school soccer, relatively high impact sports.  Therapists said my lower back injury was due in part to the SI joint constantly coming out of place and that core work would be one of the key ways to help stabilize it.  The work I did with the core ended up being very successful and was a great way to build up core muscle.  I'm really curious to know how much my injury resembled McGary's because they've only been as clear as to say that it is "lower back."

not even close, at least judging from your account.  mcgary had pretty serious fusion which is no average procedure and takes time to heal, the rehab can only be pushed so quickly.  id be shocked if he played 1 min this yr

Good thing for the Michigan orthopedic spine team and rehab specialists that they have Spikes brother involved providing stretching tips.
