Mitch Mcgary Question

This is a question I would know if I followed college basketball, but I never seem to have the time to watch it because I always seem to be busy around when the season occurs. We are all waiting to hear from Mcgary, if he commits tomorrow wil we see him this upcomming season?

Just like you won't see the football commits playing this year, because it's already this school year.

Nope, he's in the class of 2012, which means he will gradate this year. It can be a bit confusing I guess because football and basketball are played in different seasons, but they are part of the same school year.

Because the initial question was answered, let's take this in a new direction.

Given that Jared Sullinger goes to the NBA (if it exists) after this season and Tim Hardaway sticks around for his Junior year, is Michigan the favorite to win the Big Ten and a top five team?

McGary will obviously develop a lot in college, but from what I've seen, he looks like he'll be a starter from his first game freshman year. If the current players can take some big steps forward in their development this year, I am thinking we are a Final Four contender in 2012-2013,

I think Sullinger likely leaves after this year, and Buford is a senior so they'll be losing their top 2 players almost certainly.

We, OTOH, will be losing only Novak (quality starter) and Douglass (6th man?) who are great guys but likely replaced almost right away by some combination of Brundidge, Vogrich, Metrics and Little Big Dog.  We will almost certainly be Big Ten favorites and if we're #18 preseason this year I have to think 2012 we'd be top 10, top 5 is pushing it.

2-deep:

Burke - Brundidge
Hardaway - Vogrich
Metrics - Robinson III
McGary - Metrics
Morgan - Horford

I know I put Smotrycz on there twice, but I think he'd start at the three and move to the 4 depending on who needs a breather and who comes off the bench.  I think that line-up is very solid.

I'm not trying to say that those guys won't be missed. But for starters, graduating only two seniors is a good thing. And although those two add a lot of leadership on top of their physical attributes, our 2012 team will be laden with upperclassmen who will step up in their absence.

Again, not a negligible loss at all. But to trade Novak and Douglass for McGary, Robinson III and Stauskas while letting our other guys progress a year is certainly a net gain.

Neither Hardaway nor Vogrich have played a minute of shooting guard in their Michigan career. Brundidge will probably play some point AND some shooting guard (most publications say he's a stronger prospect than Burke - I don't think he's coming here to backup his entire career), and Stauskas is probably your backup.

So:

1. Burke/Brundidge

2. Brundidge/Stauskas

3. Hardaway/GRIII

4. Smotrycz/Beifeldt

5. McGary/Morgan/Horford

I know I'm putting Morgan on the bench, but I don't see a McGary/Morgan starting front-court, as Beilein Ball is largely predicated on a PF that can step out and shoot.

I don't know if this is his fifth year in HS or not, but just to dispell a few myths....

I work at a private school and we get students who come in for a final year of HS before moving on.  It is not at all uncommon for students that bounce around schools for many reasons, both good and bad (parents move often, learning disabilities cause school switches, poor upbringing resulting in a lack of discipline - that's a big one).

Long story short: The year of prep is a good thing from our perspective.  There's the possibility he works with some dedicated teachers and mentors and matures/learns some valuable life lessons that he, for whatever reason, didn't get or was unable to get, leading to the extra year.

I could be wrong, but I think in McGary's case it didn't have to do with academics, it had to do with a lack of interest in his basketball game during his true senior season. IIRC he went to a powerhouse private school to be able to get the offers from the Michigan's and Duke's and UNC's of the world that he didn't have in 2011.
