Mitch McGary Q&A

Tar Heel Illustrated has posted a transcript of a video interview they did with Mitch McGary at an open gym at Brewster Academy last week. Given the source, the interview slants toward UNC-related questions, but there was one specific to Michigan:

We know Michigan is another school you're interested in. What have the Wolverines brought to the table for you?

They (Michigan's coaches) told me I would come in and be a big part of their offense. They haven't had such a high (ranked) recruit like me in a while they told. So I think it would be a good opportunity for me to go in there and put some work in.

It's also clear McGary is nowhere near a decision:

I don't even know which school I'm favoring right now. I don't have a top three or anything like that, or a top two.

The last two questions address his time frame for making a decision and the additional official visits he plans to make:

You've still got plenty of time to make your decision, but do you have any idea when you might want to get recruiting out of the way and commit?

I don't know. I have no clue.

And do you know of any other official visits at this point in time?

(I'll officially visit) Maryland, Kentucky, and Florida sometime soon.

To me, that last answer was the most interesting bit as it was unclear from McGary's last blog post whether he was going to make more official visits or not. On a related note, Clint Jackson, the basketball recruiting director for Tar Heel Illustrated, tweeted this a couple of days ago:

Hearing Florida might be more of a player with 6-11 Mitch McGary than we all originally thought. Not the leader but in the conversation.

Usually I don't believe recruits when they say they don't have a favorite or everybody is even or something like that.  But I believe McGary. He seems to have had a legitmately good time at every one of his visits and is just enjoying the recruiting process. Just don't go to Duke or Kentucky Mitch :P

Yes, there's not much new here, but I thought it was worth posting because of McGary's last answer, where he states that he definitely plans to officially visit Maryland, Florida, and Kentucky. That was not clear before. Here and elsewhere, I've seen many people claim that this was now down to a battle between U-M, Duke, and UNC, but that seems to be an incorrect conclusion.

Have you heard Sam Webb repeat his "gut feeling" on what he believed the top three for McGary were? I've heard Sam talk about McGary at length at least twice since then, and he's made no mention of this supposed final three of U-M, Florida, and Maryland.

McGary has expressed enthusiasm about all three of his official visits--which were to U-M, UNC, and Duke.

Kentucky?  First, Calipari is a known sleaze.  Second, with all the McDonald's All-America's they have, there aren't enough basketballs for McGary to get his share.  At least at Michigan, he'd be THE main big and obviously a featured player in the Beilein system.

But, from what it sounds like, it may be quite a while until he decides.  It's a huge decision for him and a ton of things to consider.

Being one of many good players at Kentucky didn't hurt the draft stock of: John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton (who didn't even play that much while at Kentucky, Patrick Patterso, or Brandon Knight. He'd be fine going to a school with alot of talent around him. You could argue that it'd be better for him.

I agree that he could also benefit from being the main focus like he would be at Michigan, but I don't think it'd hurt him to go to Kentucky. If he's good enough, he'll play and get drafted. NBA will take workouts and personal evaluations more than how many points he scored in college.

In addition to the points about Kentucky mentioned above, it's also worth noting that Calipari has yet to receive a single commitment for 2012. Obviously that will change, especially given that about half of the top 30 recruits are considering Kentucky, but at least right now it's very unclear how much competition McGary would face at Kentucky in terms of playing time.

EDIT: Scratch my first sentence above. Kentucky just tonight got its first 2012 commitment, five-star shooting guard Archie Goodwin.
