Mitch McGary Featured in Snyder Nike Skills Academy Article

Submitted by MGoShoe on

Mitch McGary continues his offseason preps by attending the Nike Skills Academy featuring Amare Stoudemire. Mark Snyder reports.

Now, in late June after bypassing an NBA draft shot, he’s trying to find his bearings as he faces the expectations of being a first-team All-America big man based on six games of a tournament run.

“Everybody looks at me having a big name now coming back to Michigan and trying to lead this program back to Final Four status. I’ve been trying to get better every day and trying to go back to campus and prove and show my teammates I want to lead this team.

I have no doubt that McGary is planning for 2013 to be his final year at Michigan, and events like these are designed to increase his readiness for the season and show the NBA that he'll be ready for the 2014 draft. Definitely worth a read.

You've been planning for a lot of guys to leave early...

LOL I agree with you here though

He seems to have nice touch from 16-18 feet.... no reason why he can't add to his range a bit, with work.  If Kevin Love (best NBA comparison IMO, and not just because he's white) can stroke some from outside, no reason why McGary can't add that to his arsenal.  If we're planning to indeed play him at the 4 spot, all the more reason in this offense to improve the outside shooting.  Stretch that floor so GRIII (with his new and improved ability to take guys off the dribble this winter) can attack the basket.

Are you just trolling us or what? The whole "I have no doubt that [insert player who's mentioned in artical here] is planning for 2013 to be his final year at Michigan" Has been used twice now in your posts. It's kind of annoying. Tell me, is Shane Morris planning for 2013 to be his final year at Michigan? What about Brady Hoke?

Is he wrong, though?

McGary was a threat to leave after last season, and basketball players tend to leave early more readily than football (plus, McGary is already plenty old for being a second year player). And if Gardner plays as well all next season as he did at the end of last season, I could see him going early. (I tend to be much more bearish on Gardner than the rest of the board, but expectations for him are pretty high around here.)

...the board, I was trolling you. And it worked like a charm.

In truth, the post was about making a point about how many people tend to ignore the link in an OP and focus on some particular thing the OP says. I note for instance that in Snyder's article, he provides insight into why McGary decided to turn down his invite to join the USA U-20 World University team (John Beilein serving as asst coach), info about his physical condition, what he believes his leadership role will be on the team next year, and other things.

You might be annoyed that I made the same prediction about McGary and Gardner, but if you think it's because I think it's swell to make predictions about which Michigan ball players will declare for a draft, you'd be wrong.

“The coaches talked to me about leadership this year being one of the older guys on the team, even though I’m a sophomore,” McGary said. " - from the article

Early in the tournament run, as I recall, there was an article in which Trey Burke pointed out that McGary really is one of the emergine leaders on the team, at least in his view. He talked about how McGary leads with his play more than anything, which Burke called "motivation for the team" at one point. He even expressed a desire to at least be part of the team's leadership during the press conference in which he announced he would stay. In the departing seniors, he had some excellent role models for leadership, and I really think Mitch McGary would fit the role nicely.
