Just received an email saying it's a Maize out...
I really wish they would put the Maize Outs back on the tickets.
Color me stupid, but I don't get it. Isn't the idea for students (and everyone else) to wear Maize to all games?
I'm in the same boat with you on this one. Meta, but if anyone can explain why we, as a fanbase, don't always wear more Maize I would appreciate it.
Blue and grey make for a dull crowd at the game. Maize everygame.
How what color they wear makes the crowd dull.
As said below, our uniforms aren't maize, there's a lot less use for bright yellow clothes in general, and it's not exactly an intimidating color. They tried a blue out once against MSU, but it just kinda all blended together. It looks good on tv, but that's about it.
Your one of those,"hey down in front guys" eh.
are pretty good on tv, as well.
it looks great when the fans have a unified color. look at a penn state white out crowd and tell me that's not impressive. when you see the rainbow of michigan stadium it looks like we're casual fans.
MICHIGAN FANS ARE NOT CASUAL FANS!!!
That is all
p.s. I'm durnk and you would not believe how may ties I had ot write that ot get it straight. Oooh, I did straight right...
A man after my own heart.
Man, when any team has a "Black Out"... yeesh. Just looks sad and dead.
i participated in a black out for the first half of many a game in undergrad. i was neither sad, nor dead.
My word choice may have been poor, so you're right about it not making a crowd 'dull'.
I just don't think it's too much to ask for our crowd to have a large majority wearing one color. Maize. Blue. Whatever - I was just agreeing that it's funny we have to denote a game for us to wear our most bold (boldest?) school color.
The student section is always so obvious because no one else can do anything consistent. I realize there's not much to do about it, I just think it's a funny necessity.
It's pretty easy - because beyond the first few games it's probably 50 degrees or less at game time. Not many people own bright yellow sweatshirts or jackets.
is this 'bright yellow' colour you speak of?
Next you'll be all like, it's the Philosopher's, not the Sorcerer's, Stone.
Probably because that would keep people from wearing jerseys to the games since we thankfully dont have maize jerseys yet.
Your point makes entirely too much sense.
I prefer blue myself.
It's hard to find maize jerseys, hoodies, jackets, etc. so I don't see how they could have every game be a maize out. I think they'd have better luck if they did something with blue, but that wouldn't show up as well on TV.
We tried a blue out once. 2005 Ohio State game, anyone?
U-M Students to Stage Blue Out Against Michigan State ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Students at the University of Michigan will be a bit blue on Nov. 2 -- blue in color, that is. The inaugural Blue Out, a student-led effort to blanket Michigan Stadium in uniform support for the football team, will be staged as the Wolverines host intrastate rival Michigan State. All Wolverine fans are encouraged to wear blue to the game and help provide a united backdrop in the stadium. Commemorative long-sleeved T-shirts will be available at a price of only $10 each starting Monday, Oct. 21. T-shirts will be on sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at the Union and on the Diag. The T-shirts, designed by the student leaders behind the event, will feature the Blue Out slogan, "Go Blue! Beat MSU!" and the date of the game. T-Shirts are not available by mail. The Michigan Student Assembly, the University of Michigan Athletic Department, and the Alumni Association proudly support the Blue Out. For general questions about the Blue Out, please contact [email protected]
OSU 2005. (OK, link not working for press release, but -
"Blue Out" Planned for 102nd Meeting With Ohio State
All I remember from that game is water bottles, coins, and blacking out most of the first half. Sigh.
I already blue myself
And shouldn't you save the Maize for a team like Nebraska or OSU who won't be wearing yellow pants?
I think they have to do the maize outs in warm weather so people wear the t shirts.
edit: ND Sux said this below
ASU staged a "Blackout" to show off their all black Nike unis against Missouri. Note that black is NOT one of ASU's school colors, but IS one of Missouri's.
So, wait, is like, Arizona State, not smart or some junk?
Funny, use an outdated joke about a school you truly know nothing about. http://asu.edu/excellence/
ASU may not be Michigan or Notre Dame or even a UCLA but some of our programs are top notch.
Your cool. Shitting on another Michigan fans college.
You win the asshat of the day award.
Some of EMU's programs are top notch too. I'm not ragging on ASU, but that's not really a great argument.
I know two girls from ASU that are very smart. One, who went to ASU for in-state purposes, is incredible at economic policy.
I know several other people that went to ASU because they wanted boobs, booze, or hot guys (or I guess an interesting combination of all three). You're not going to shake off your reputation as a party school on this blog. Or in most people's minds.
I thought that was strange too, but we did look awesome and it got our school excited about something.
Michigan with the maize outs in September look great. When it gets cold who the hell cares what you wear as long as your warm and showing off your team.
Whats worse is Arizona State is in the middle of a desert, it was the beginning of September, and it was 102 degrees at kickoff. Clearly black is the color your fans should dress themself in.
In addition to putting it on the tickets, save it for big games, not games on BTN or against opponents who can't beat high school teams. Oh well.
don't count your chickens before they hatch!
Wasn't it George Perles who said, "People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones before their eggs hatch?"
when it turns colder? All the M jackets and stuff comes in BLUE. Get a t-shirt three sizes too big and put it over your jacket?
Stop thinking like that, we'll have none of that around here, get back into your box.
You could always get yourself one of those full body suits in Maize. You know, the ones that have a hood that cover the head an face as well. There's always a few of those guys in the stands at every game, why not one more?
[EDIT: There's actually a website for these things! http://superfansuits.com/]
[EDIT AGAIN: Here you go!
I think the high on Saturday is like 59. Having to see the outline of some dude's dong is bad enough; I'll take a pass on rock hard nipples too.
if its that cold you probably wont have to worry about seeing his dong
I got a maize/yellow sweatshirt for this exact reason.
will never work so long as the home jerseys are not maize. People understandably want to wear their jerseys to the game (or a coat, which are usually not maize).
NOTE: I do not want maize jerseys in any way, shape or form.

Let's Go Maize!
Penn State's white out against Ohio State in 2005. That was one of the hardest hitting football games that I ever saw, pads were exploding.
I liked their 2006 white out against us. People died.
This one showing by the PSU crowd is the reason that I still consider them to be the best fans in college football. The turnout in white was amazing. I still wonder if the AD paid the money to provide the shirts to fans (like U-M did with the pom-poms for the UTL game) . . .
Same here. I'm pretty sure they did hand out T-shirts at the game.
I'm doing a road trip with my kids in a couple weeks to see PSU play Purdue in Happy Valley. We wanted to go because everyone says it's a pretty awesome game day experience. On the way back we're going to see the Steelers host the Jaguars. Should be a sweet weekend. Full debrief to follow.
I'm sure Morelli remembers that game as a BLACK OUT
A couple of people have noted the issue with Michigan stuff coming in blue. Please allow me to suggest the ever fashionable Michigan Hockey jersey in maize. Get it a bit large and it will easy go over your sweatshirt or jacket. It has all the maize you'd want and is appropraite in winter and spring (aka frozen four season). Makes a lovely gift.
Noam Chomsky agrees with you.
What makes you think he isn't?
Colorless maize ideas slept furiously.
Go tell your folks that they shouldn't let you use the computer until all your 8th grade homework is done. Be a good kid and run along now. The adults are talking.
[Edit - this was directed at Oaktown. I replied to that post and the site put it here. ]
The reason Maize Outs are in the early season is there is very limited Maize outerwear. That's why Michigan did a Blue Out in 2005 against ohio because blue coats are common.
The Maize out against Minn is so that we can at least get one in in October. The only other chance would be Purdue . . . even worse. Plus, the Purdue game is homecoming where you will have ancient alumni in the stands that do not have any Michigan attire that is not gray (or even from this century).
I don't get why people think that it's impossible to find maize winter clothes. Sure, it may not be as common as blue or gray, but by it's by no means difficult to find. I have a couple maize sweatshirts (which I have no trouble finding a "use" for the other 3/4 of the year) and I used to have a yellow winter ski jacket (sadly worn out, new one was a gift). I also have a maize jersey (ok, that one's hockey, like The FannMan). I don't really feel the need to wear jerseys to football games anyway.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that I think everyone has to wear maize. If you're not going to join in the maize-outs though, don't blame it on an inability to find suitable gear. If you want to go in your blue jersey, that's up to you. I prefer to always go in maize because it's a more impressive effect, your preferences may be different.
and I go the games (home and away) because I love to watch Michigan football, live and in-person and root like hell for the Maize and Blue.
I really don't give a shit what it looks like on TV ... dressing all alike makes us look "queer" (oh no ... I need to watch that PSA again!).
wowie ... can't wait.
The schools that have the best [color]-out games are the ones who either have a bright primary home jersey color (red, orange), have white as a school color (PSU) or have a black alternate jersey (many schools, ASU, Louisville). Unfortunately for this purpose, our colors are dark blue and bright maize. The dark blue doesn't stand out, and maize is not a color that people wear outside of a sports context (when was the last time you saw someone wearing bright yellow clothing that didn't have a sports team logo on it like Michigan or Oregon?) and it is rare to see a yellow jacket or sweatshirt. I personally wouldn't own any yellow clothing if maize wasn't one of our colors, and even then most of my Michigan stuff is blue.
But it could be worse. We could be like Notre Dame's student section with royal blue shirts at a school that wears navy blue and gold (and sometimes green).
Black-outs suck. Light or bright colors is where it's at.
Is it a waning or waxing maize-out?
it would be a waxing maize out (ie - games 1 - 6 are waxing and 7-12 would be waning).
You're welcome ... and
If we must make certain games maize outs and not all games maize outs why is Minnesota a maize out and not Nebraska or Ohio State.
Didn't they give all the students maize t-shirts with their season tickets? It sure looked that way when I was at the WMU game...
Sort of solves the "where can I find a yellow shirt" problem.
Nope they cost $ 10 along with the season tickets.
Hey, wear whatever you want and tell anyone who doesn't like it to get a life. We had a dude in our dorm freshmen year who tried to coordinate outfits every Saturday. He moved out after the fall semester.
"Hi guyzzzz! Let's all wear yellow today..."
Maize outs are fun but when I think of a good time I think black-out or at the very least a brown-out.
I am not a fan of this
1. Thanks for the notice
2. Where the he'll can you get Maize coats?
Don't want to hear about sweatshirts because those are all cheap and ugly! Hand out some pom pome if you want cold Maize
Depends on how much you want to pay and what kind of coat you want. Here's one: http://www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=3089561&SearchedProduct=t
If you're a lady who's into fashion, maybe this one: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/steve-madden-toggle-coat/3058217?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&P=2&pbo=6024786
I wouldn't go out and buy a coat just for this, but I wear my "cheap and ugly" sweatshirts until it gets really cold.
Not sure how to start a new thread. I have two tickets for the Minnesota game I need to sell as some things have come up and I will not be able to make it up for the game. The seats are in section 35, row 36. Price is negotiable. Again sorry, not trying to hi jack just not sure where else to post this.
Since weather's being discussed here, I thought I'd ask: how's it looking in AA currently in terms of precipitation?
Was wondering about the likelihood of the golf courses & Pioneer being closed for tomorrow's game.
