Minnesota game set for 3:30 kickoff on ESPN2/ ABC

Submitted by Crime Reporter on
I was hoping for the noon slot personally but per ESPN we will be on at 3:30 p.m. Edit: apparently this is common knowledge so I apologize for the thread.

Since this is Homecoming, the time was announced before the season started.

Also, the game will not be on ESPN.  The game will be on ABC in part of the country, and ESPN2 in the rest of the country (EDIT:  I see you corrected the thread title--thanks).

Anyone have a link to the coverage map?  I will be stuck in north Georgia at a wedding of a niece who is not able to follow my advice (given more than a year in advance) about bye weekends.  I hope we will have it on ABC down there; not sure if I'll have access to ESPN2.

Oh, and the wedding is at 6, so thanks to whoever who decided this would be a 3:30 game.  I actually think 3:30 is very good for homecoming so that there is time for all the other events of the weekend.  Unfortunately, when I have been in town for homecoming, I have been stuck with noon games.  A noon game this week would have been great fo rme.

Why does anyone who loves the game ever root for a noon kickoff? The crowd is always dead. And games that end up under the lights are almost always the better for it.

I've noticed this.

Whatever works. I don't understand why someone needs 5+ hours to party before a game when you should be focusing on the game. Save that for after. Noon kicks give you more time and it is still daytime while 3:30 and later, you'll be in the dark.

Nothing past Noon flies around here in November since Bo said it would never happen again.

I'm hoping you can tell me exactly when Bo said this.  It is often attributed to him (I think Lloyd Carr managed to convince us all that Bo said something to this effect), but it confuses me because as far as I can recall Michigan never once started a game at noon when Bo was coach.  Maybe there were some 12:15 games in the late '80s, but never the noon kickoffs that we see today.

Michigan even refused to move the scheduled 1:00 kickoff time for the 1983 Ohio State game by more than 30 minutes either way, and told the TV networks to schedule around it.

Noon is today's 1pm. Kind of confusing , I know.

But when Michigan played minnesota in 1988, which was a 3:30 kick, it was dark at kickoff. Bo said after there wouldn't be any game played that late and there hasn't been since.

He was referring to 3:30 games in November.  After the 1988 Minnesota game, which was a 3:30 start in November that was frigid cold and ended under a  close to night sky, Bo remarked in his post-game press conference that Michigan would never again have a 3:30 home game in November.  Since he was athletic director at that time, maybe he had the power to do that, I'm not sure.  But I don't think athletic directors have that power today.  So it may be moot.

I hope all home games are 3:30 starts now because we won't have a student section otherwise.

This is key. I haven't experienced GA yet but based on what my sister and cousins have told me, it sucks.

With a noon game, you're either going to have the students get there sober at 9 or 10 to get a good seat. They're gonna be cold, tired, and pissed off against a presumably not so sexy opponent. Also, hungover from going out the night before or they just didn't go out the night before so they could get up early enough (which would suck for a lot of of people).  Or you're going to have juniors and seniors who go out the night before, wake up and tailgate whenever they want, and show up late.

I'm too nervous before games. I don't say very much because I'm focused.

Party when you win. I don't understand people who can party before the biggest game of the year. I felt like throwing up before The Game 2011. Same with the Sugar Bowl and the hockey 2011 NCAA title game. Not really for basketball since I didn't expect them to be there or necessairly win. I was loose like the players.

It's only weird if it doesn't work.

Just couldn't picture Michigan winning it last year. Not yet. Kind of like how Michigan Hockey kept getting to the Frozen Four in the 90s but couldn't pull it out until it all came together in 1995-96.

I was so proud and happy the way they played last season. Just getting there was amazing since 5 years ago they were 10-22.

I love how Devotee's new schtick, now that he's bought his way out of perma-Bolivian with a bunch of downloaded MGoVideos, is to constantly barrage us with endless trivia and feigned historical knowledge to make us forget the fact that he's a teenager who used to be one of the most insufferable, rude, and consistently combative users this side of bouje. Not to mention his bizarre, insensitive Twitter account.

  1. I didn't ask to have points restored. Go and read the thread. Brian gave me points back.
  2. They weren't MGoVideos. They were YouTube videos made by WolverineHistorian. I have literally been saving them using SaveVid since 2010. Every time he released a new one it was like Christmas. One of my many hobbies. I didn't even know how to use torrents/MGoVideo until this past July/August.
  3. I've cleaned up my act on here posting. People have noticed. Am I embarrassed by the stuff I have said on here and on my twitter in the past? Yep. Very ignorant things. But I have done my very best to turn it around, and I am very pleased with the way I have.

I've lied about my age countless of times on here. I am really 18 years old and a HS Senior. The reason I lied is because I have seen how younger people have been treated on here. Most of the time, they deserve it. But it's quite obvious older people don't respect them or anything they have to say. Not just on the internet, but in life.

You use my age against me like it is my fault that I was born in 1995. Sorry, I can't control that. Would I have loved to experience the Schembechler days and the 1997 season persoanlly? I'd give anything. What cracks me up though is you (three) talk down to me because I am younger, and yet, you follow and read and celebrate when kids my age and even YOUNGER THAN ME commit to Michigan.

You think I don't know Michigan history, Bando? I've posted MY record book I have been working on since I was in the sixth grade, on this site multiple times. It is over 2,000 pages, 7 inches thick and all paid for by me. You kinda retain some of that information after typing it mulitple times, owning and reading quite a few Michigan books and spend close to all of my free time on this site or on MVictors. I hate talking about it because it seems like I'm bragging that I am a "superior fan". I am better than no one.

I don't know what I've done to piss you off so much to  the point where every comment you make about me is negative . I post here a lot because this is the only place where I can have intelligent conversations about Michigan athletics. Up until recently, this site is where I did all of my socializing. I've made friends recently and have been getting out, but this place was my only hope for a long, long time.

And yes. I do drink. Quite often. I am under the age of 21. So does/did every other person in this country including you. Maybe I'll drink myself into an early grave, and you won't have to deal with me anymore. Because that is the only way I'm gonna stop posting on this site.

I'm thrilled about the 5pm start for that game, but only because I am attending.  I'll be roaming the PSU tailgating area in my highlighter yellow Michigan shirt for about 6 hours prior to the game.  I've heard it is a rough crowd, but I'm also 6'4" 290, and a lot more athletic and in shape than you would think a 290 pound message board poster would be.

Went down to Happy Valley in '06 when I was a student and was offered approximately a thousand brats and enough beer to keep a fraternity going for a month walking around the tailgating scene outside Beaver Stadium. And I was even wearing a Manningham jersey. Total strangers just handing stuff out to Michigan fans like tailgate row was a water station at a marathon.

Long story short, PSU fans are sickeningly nice. Grab some ice cream at the Creamery, too.

I love this idea.

With the new TV contract coming up, it would be great if the Big Ten could negotiate start times of 1/4:30/8 with the new TV network instead of 12/3:30/8.  Obviously ABC/ESPN won't go for it, but maybe some other network with just as much money could make that a part of the deal.

And why not have BTN afternoon games start at 1:30 or even 2?  It's not like they have to worry about the rest of their programming day...

This is a good point.  If you only have three time slots on the day, there's no point in starting your first one at noon, and there's nothing magical about a 3:30 start that doesn't also apply for a 4:30 start.  And now that everyone plays night games, the "daylight" argument doesn't really apply.

I can't figure out what the hell is going on with TV time slots for the life of me.  Disney has utterly destroyed the noon time slot so that now there is jack shit to watch until 3:30.
