Minick police report: "he almost fell on his face,"

While going through sobriety tests on the westbound side of Airport Blvd., Minick could not walk a straight line and had trouble keeping balance. At one point, when Minick bent over to tie his shoe, "he almost fell on his face," according to the report.

"I had to hold him up so he didn't fall and hurt himself," Cole's report reads. "Minick advised he couldn't do the test sober. The test was stopped for Minick's safety."

At St. Joseph Hospital, Minick was repeatedly told to peacefully sit on a stretcher for his blood test, but continued to ask to use the restroom. Instead, he "continued to refuse lawful orders." He was ultimately "forcibly" pushed down onto the stretcher after security was called to assist.

Aside from everything else, if a guy has to piss let him piss, it's not going to effect the blood test. Instead they make it a power struggle that results in use of force by the sounds of this.

I, for one, took this story as an "it could've happened to me" item and really held back opinion due to the potential of .08 getting to .11 without influencing a driver. He was trashed. That wasn't known. He needs to go - we tossed Moeller for equivalent

I think Moeller ultimately was fired because the Southfield Police released an audiotape of a pathetically drunk Moeller to the press (not via FOIA, but because the officer liked MSU).  It made him (and the school) look really bad, and Moeller got fired pretty quickly.

Which to this day I think is a damn shame.  A good man who made a mistake that's less than Minick's.  Moeller was arrested on disorderly conduct due to his behavior at Excalibur - he wasn't behind the wheel endangering the public.

(And I'm not drawing that comparison to call for Minick's head, BTW.  It's more to underscore that Moeller's transgressions were pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.)

He got drunk either on a team flight or immediately after landing after a game in Indiana in the middle of his second season at USD (the team played in Indiana on Saturday and he was arrested in SD early Sunday).  He ran a stop sign, got pulled over, and pled guilty to DUI.  He didn't miss a game then.  USD gave him a contract extension less than two months after the arrest.  He got hired by Stanford just over a year after the arrest, less than a third of the way through his court ordered probation for that arrest.

Do those facts change things for you?  Are you just as mad that Jim Harbaugh was allowed to not only keep his job, but continue to be hired for bigger and better positions?  And if your opinion about Harbaugh is different, then bitching about Minick keeping his job is extremely hypocritical.

Should USD have fired Harbaugh? Maybe/maybe not. Should Missouri have fired Pinkel? Should anyone get fired unless you are doing it in a company or state car? The trick is the position he has on a staff with young gentlemen. In many programs this is a one or two game suspension. This is a tough one with no great answers.

Different Expectations
Harbaugh had his DUI almost 10 years ago. Few people were bothered by the Confederate battle flag ten years ago. These days, the expectations around sexual abuse, drunk driving, racism, etc. are far different than 10 years ago. Harbaugh hired a personal friend with no experience with athletic departments. Harbaugh did not interview candidates after posting the job. Such a hire gets one strike. If Harbaugh did the same thing over the 4th of July weekend, he would be fired.

I really don't know the details of Harbaugh's DUI beyond what you say here, but if he was as drunk as Minick, lying to the cops about it and refusing a breathalyzer, then yeah, probably should have been fired. Do I think this incident should have precluded Harbaugh from being our coach? No, because he has 10 years of a clean record and no indication of an ongoing problem. Minick should get another chance, but not from us. Not now.

"if a guy has to piss let him piss"

Yeah, and then give him a citation for urinating in public.  Or let him piss himself.  If you can't drink and behave like a man, you can piss yourself like a toddler.

Even if there was any legitimacy to your insane macho position in the abstract, the guy was in a hospital. Your prescription should only take place in a hospital if you were the only person in the vicinity. The other 7 billion people on the planet don't want Minick or anyone else pissing on them, near them, or on the hospital floor when they're sick in the hospital...

sometimes it's outright lies (sad to say that) much more frequently it is sloppiness or incompetence.   just saved a guy's bacon last week where the MSP videotape exonerated him - case dismissed.  the cop was not being dishonest, probably a decent fella, but he screwed up and unless you knew what you were watching and knew the law, you'd have read the report and said, 'guilty'.

comment, only tatar's comment and the rejoinder about all police reports are not 100% accurate.  reports can leave out incredibly critical facts and circs, they can be flat out dishonest (relatively rare, but unfortunately not unheard of), and they can be inaccurate.  i know of what i speak, having read untold thousands of reports and having examined thousands of witnesses in hundreds of trials, including in about every type of homicide known to mankind.

as to this particular case, with the BAC so high and the report reading like it does, if you ask me do i think minncik was hammered my answer would be 'yes'.  bad decision by that guy and i'm not sure i'd retain him if i was his employer at michigan.  i'd have to put a lot of thought into that and know a lot more facts.
