I can't even comprehend a guy his age (I'm 49) and in his position going out and having 8 bloody drinks and then driving.

He should be let go this sends a bad message to the kids on the team.  I realize that no one is sinless but mistakes of youth are one thing...mistakes like this are not even comprehendable.  I could also see maybe he had a beer or 2 within an hour would merit something.  But 8 drinks?
