Mindset of people hoping for injuries

Submitted by UMMAN83 on

I believe I know the answer.  However, what is the mindset of the sparties and buckeyes hoping and praying for certain UM players to be injured.  Pretty sad in my mind and representative of the circle those "humans" travel in ... I would quote a few bible passages  that forsee their judgement but will opt for your opinion.

Is winning a football game all  that sums up the lives of these types?   I love to win but at the expense of injury to a young player.  Mind-boggling.

I would never root for a player to get injured even if he plays for one of our rivals. Obviously injuries are a part of football but I don't openly hope for Pryor or Cousins to break their leg. I don't know, i'd rather beat our opponents with their best players on the field. To me this says: THEY SCUURED. That's the only reason why they would root for I'm guessing Denard to get hurt. Its classless, exactly why I wouldn't put it past them to hope for an injury.

The jealousy involved here is beyond anything i've ever seen.  Buckeye fans are angry because we already have a quarterback who is a year younger then Pryor and is already better.  Michigan State knows they've got an ass whoopin' in the making so they're best hope is for our players to get injured.  Both TUOS and EL fans are as classless as they come, the karma train will make it's way to EL and to the armpit of America, Columbus.

I surfed one of the ND message boards (cited in a Shadenfreude titled post from Saturday) and not only did more than one fan say "My prayers have been answered!" when DRob went out for that play -- many also were ranting about Crist being a "pussy" for sitting out with a probable concussion.

I don't understand it.  I would hope most of the Domers are not Alumni - I make no such assumptions with the other schools.

However, I have been known to scream at the TV "Hit Him!!!" in regard to a certain Mr. Williams from Illinois -- not to hurt him (well maybe a little) - while expressing my frustration at the Michigan D.

I witnessed this at ND stadium. When Robinson got up slow then went to the sideline this fat broad exclaimed "finally! Thank goodness!" amd cheered. I knew this woman was a bumpkin and not an alumnus but i looked at her and said "really? Rooting for a 19 y/o to be injured? What is wrong with you?" Im sure she felt like an ignorant cow.

I believe the mindset or thought process of a person like that runs something like this:

hate hate hate hateHATE HATE hate hate

It is a corrosive attitude that can literally affect your health and well being.

Were you sincerely disappointed when Drew Stanton got body-slammed to the Michigan Stadium turf and couldn't return to the game?  Do you cringe when posters on this site put up photos of Michigan defenders towering over immobile quarterbacks like Brady Quinn and Anthony Morelli?  I also doubt you feel cheated that Dayne Crist missed so much of the first half on Saturday after getting his brain scrambled.

Nobody wants anybody to get hurt, but it is football and it is competitive.  I've never seen any fan of any team shedding tears when a great player for the opposition is unable to compete, especially if one of their own guys "knocked him out of the game."

I agree.  Most UM fans remember where they were when they saw this play, but Morelli obviously wished it didn't happen.

I will say, though, that I never wanted to see a guy get hurt out there.  Even against OSU, I always felt bad when a kid had to be carried off the field because of an injury.  That said, it might be difficult to shed a tear if Boren were to tweak an ankle.

Football is not ballet, it's a contact sport. I root for people to get hurt. I don't root for them to get injured. There is a difference. It's a team's job to makes the other guy scared, sore, and yes, knock him out of the game, if done cleanly, without cheap shot. I won't cheer that a guy is on the ground, and they always deserve the polite clap off the field. But I won't feel bad if they get knocked out of the game. That's what the defense is trying to do. Likewise, I hope the player is not injured, with anything career threatening, of even season threatening. Bounce back up and be ready for next week's opponent. But have second thoughts about coming back in versus us. Football defenses are not coached to "two-hand touch."

The lamest mindset of people. About as lame and idiotic as the refrain I keep hearing from haters that "Michigan better hope he doesn't get hurt" or "they are screwed". Said with an obvious anticipation of the event.

I can't speak for OSU/MSU/etc fans, but I would say that with most Michigan fans, its a joke.  We'll say it laughingly, but we don't truly wish for it in our hearts.

It's like saying, "I wish Columbus would get wiped off the face of the Earth."  Do I really mean that?  Do I really want Columbus to get wiped off the face of the Earth and for all OSU fans to die a fiery death?

OF COURSE I DO.

See what I did there?  It's called humor.  Slightly morbid and edgy, but still humor.

My lone gameday experience in Columbus proved that to me.  The entire game (2006) a Buckeye "fan" (in quotes because fan implies that the person is a human being) near us kept shouting "Break his fucking ankle!" everytime the OSU defense tackled Mike Hart.  Seriously.  Every time.

To me there is a big difference between that kind of mongoloid behavior and simply not being disappointed if the opposing QB is a little slow getting up after a sack.

Injuries in football are a fact if life. Is it proper to hope that a certain player gets injured? Probably. Do I personally do it? Yes. Does that make me a bad person? No.

<br>On the bright side... If a opposing fan is praying shoelace gets hurt then DR is the real deal indeed.

Theoretical Angry Guy ALWAYS roots for opposing players to get hurt.  This is because TAG's lone source of pride in his pathetic life is whatever sports team(s) he roots for, and if there's something that could possibly happen to aid in his team winning, he wants it to happen.  TAG doesn't see athletes from opposing teams (or from his own team, even) as the HUMANS that they are, but instead see them as an obstruction.  TAG also enjoys browsing various message boards and leaving incredibly insulting comments about opposing teams' players.  He wants his team to be the best, and needs to knock everyone else down a notch to get them there.

IME, it's pretty sad if you ever openly root for an athlete to be injured, especially amateur athletes.  Just remember that, in general, the kids on the other teams are really no different from the ones who play for Michigan; they just happened to choose to attend other schools.

So, to finally answer your question... Yes.  Sadly.

I love when people disntiguish between Alumnus and Fan..

How dare someone who didn't go for the school cheer for the schools team?! Or that somehow alumni are more, classy? educated? than non alumni?

...how much glee was expressed on this board when deeply troubled human being/Spartan (that's two strikes?) Glenn Winston was injured last year. As much as we'd like to think so, this phenomenon unfortunately can't be restricted to any one school...  there are some fans for every team that for reasons yet unknown wish to see serious injury inflicted on individuals who endanger themselves every play for our amusement.  And this just because they play for the wrong team.

I call those particular fans a--hats.
