Mikoyan Walks Around Ann Arbor Again...

It was a nice night tonight, so I decided to mosey on over to Ann Arbor for a bit of a walk and some pictures.  I was gonna try to get some of the other Kahn buildings that I didn't get last time since I would have plenty of sun this time.  Anyways.....

I realize there are a ton of other Kahn buildings on campus I need to visit.  Eventually I will get them.  Now that it is staying brighter later, this is a little easier.

I walk past C.C. Little and the Natural Science Museum all the time and I've never noticed how similar looking they are from those angles.  I'm definitely going to have to check those out the next time I go by.

Great pictures. Michigan is an amazing place.  I see you had Tobico Marsh on your blog too.  I grew up on a spit of land between there and Saginaw Bay. You captured that perfectly.

Thanks for the photos.  I love the Albert Kahn theme -- his buildings are my favorite -- and, of course, I like all the views on the UM campus.

I thought your comment about the Kraus (never knew the name) Natural Science Building was interesting.  I have always thought that to be the quientessential Kahn building (not that I am an architectural critic).  It is simple and elegant; it has the large windows that were clearly the functional style at the time when it was necessary to take advantage of natural light; it looks like it relates to the factories he designed at the time.  I have always liked it.  And, and on top of that while from afar it seems to be only a simple design, when you get close to it you realize that the brickwork is amazing. 

Your posts caused me to read the Kahn entry on Wikipedia.  I was reminded of so many buildings at UM and in Detroit (and elsewhere) that he designed.  What a resume!  I was also interested in the buildings I had no idea he designed, like homes, especially the fraternities and sororaties on campus.  I noticed that he designed a house in 1906 for one of the first sororities, the oddly-named (to the modern ear) Collegiate Sorosis House.  (That old sorority had disappeared from campus, only to be ressurrected in 1980 for about 15 years.  I was an undergrad from 79-83, so the name is familiar to me.)  What was most interesting to me is that I recognize the address, 1501 Washtenaw.  It is now the house for Triange Fraternity, where my son is now a member.  (The current house is actually an amalgamation of two houses that were once adjacent, so there has obviously been some basterdization of Kahn's work, but the old house still has some style.)
