Was that article insinuating he would "fill the vacancy on the defensive side" as a D-Coord?

That would definitely be a risky move...

I think it would be a good signing in drawing in recruits.  Wheatley is doing pretty well getting the attention of some good recruits for Syracuse.

Playing in the NFL for 14 years with 3 super bowl rings probably draws some interest. He played as a DE in college but switched to LB for the Pats. With it being this close to the season, this has to be the best name that they could get and if Fickell is gone next year having a year coaching OSU's linebackers probably doesn't look too bad on a resume if you're trying to get into coaching.

According to Bucknuts, it will be announced on Monday that he is the new coach.

Again, I say...meh.

He has had a pretty good career in the NFL given his limitations; good for him to more on and to have this fall back position. That said, it's not like he's Mattison or has a pedigree as a coach in developing players at any level.

I don't think this moves the meter a hell of a lot; good idea to announce it Monday after the "response" tomorrow and the Buckeye wrist slap.

This doesn't help their recruiting. He can't promise kids he's going to be there next year, just like all their other coaches.
