Mike Vrabel to be named Ohio State Linebackers coach

Submitted by wresler120 on

A press conference has been scheduled for Monday, where it appears Mike Vrabel will fill the vacant Linebacker coach spot which was opened when Luke Fickell took the head coaching job.

Vrabel could not be reached for comment yesterday, and Fickell, athletic director Gene Smith and athletic department spokesmen declined to comment. But the school tentatively has set a news conference for Monday to announce the hire. Vrabel could step in as linebackers coach, which was Fickell's specialty.

Very good hire to help with the recruiting.  Really should help with the native Ohio kids.  The only questions are, first can he coach, and if Fickell is replaced at the end of the season, will he be retained by the new staff?

for the lame duck AD.  He needs to clean up his program and bring in integrity and credibility so instead of going after Chris Spielman he gets Vrabel instead. Fail.

for the Bucks from PR persepective.  I like Vrabel and he's a competitor.

On the other hand, he has no coaching experience.  It's one thing to be a great player, it's another to be a great coach.

People seem to forget that usually the better coaches weren't great players.  I don't know if its just the fact that the number of average players is far greater than the number or great players, so odds are a coach wasn't a great player.  Or if it's because the average players had to work harder, develop better technique, and have a better head for the game to be able to see the field and that makes them better coaches.  From a recruiting standpoint I guess the hire helps OSU, but I don't know how much better this will make them on the field, might even be a downgrade in a couple years.  And with the last 2 classes of LBs I don't think the staff will take too many in the next couple of classes so it shouldn't hurt Michigan with recruiting.
