Mike Sanford Jr - Boise State OC - Tells Urban No for OC

Submitted by alum96 on

But but but.... per national media only Michigan gets told no when they go after coaches from other staffs.  Travesty!  Part of the Stanford coaching tree as well - although a Shaw guy.  You'd think any 32 year old dude would go be OC for Urban because all his OCs get HC jobs soon after.

Apparently his dad was OC for Urbz at Utah.  And he still said no.  Damn.

The elder Sanford was Ohio State coach Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator when the two worked together at Utah from 2003-04.

Anywho...

Boise State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Sanford Jr. interviewed for the same spot at Ohio State to succeed the outgoing Tom Herman but has elected to remain with the Broncos, according to a source.

With Sanford considered one of college football’s brightest offensive minds, his retention is a coup for Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin.

Boise State’s offense ranks ninth in the FBS this season in scoring (39.7 points per game) and 14th in total offense (494.3 yards per game). Ohio State is the latest suitor for the 32-year-old Sanford, who had also been approached recently about offensive coordinator gigs at Oregon State and Vanderbilt.

A 2005 Boise State graduate, Sanford returned to the Broncos this season after three years as an assistant at Stanford. He coached running backs his first season with the Cardinal, was also given the responsibility of recruiting coordinator his second season and keep those extra duties when he became quarterbacks and wide receivers coach his final season.

Wow, I'm glad to hear that.  I didn't realize he was interviewing for the OC position at OSU.

I would have been concerned with that hire--I've been watching Boise State for years, and Mike Sanford Jr. is no joke.  It's cliche, but it's absolutely true:  Boise State has one of the most creative and overachieving offenses in the country.

Year, after year, after year . . . .

Why would he interview for the job and then not accept it? Either he got a substaintial pay raise at Boise and/or wasn't going to be given the responsibilities he wanted.

Its like, "Wow, working for a legend like Urban Meyer would be great!" and then have the interview, hear what Urbz had to say, the way he'd run the show, blah blah blah, and then realize...."Ummm, this guy is a douchebag."   (Not necessarily the case, but more than likely).   Similar story, I wanted to interview for a job at Anheuser Busch-InBev because...well obviously, working for a BEER company....but then found out that the company culture isn't what I would like to work for.

Really, South Detroit?!?!

1)  Perry pleads poetic license, and ignorance, despite the fact that a quick glance at a map would have alerted him to the issue. "I ran the phonetics of east, west, and north, but nothing sounded as good or emotionally true to me as South Detroit," he says. "The syntax just sounded right. I fell in love with the line. It’s only been in the last few years that I’ve learned that there is no South Detroit. But it doesn’t matter."

2)  The Detroit riverfront & Jefferson Avenue are not really referred to as South Detroit as they are part of the "Central" downtown area.

BAM!  Upvote for you.  Using the logic that some have postulated, since we have a Northern Michigan University, and a Eastern Michigan University, and a Western Michigan University, we MUST also have a Southern Michigan University!  Will someone please find so I can buy a t-shirt.

Many believe co-OC Ed Warinner will be promoted to be the primary OC with playcalling duties. The new hire will likely be a co-OC with a focus as QB coach. It's quite possible he wasn't offered play calling duties.

Footballscoop.com - "Ohio State is struggling to fill their OC role".

Just kidding.  Those are my words, not theirs.

Couldn't help but take a swipe at a POS like footballscoop.

Who would want this job?  Ohio State made it through the B1G undefeated and will play for NC on Monday.  Despite that, I think most folks are very happy that Tom Herman is leaving for Houston.  They rode his ass all season, and depending on the week, rode Luke Fickell even harder.  They've only tolerated Chris Ash because he's new this year.  Clearly, Urbz is a god, but anyone directly underneath him (coordinators/college coeds) will be open to great ridicule down here.

Is fun and all to poke at OSU and Urban Meyer, lets all recall the key component that Sanford is a BSU graduate and it's very difficult to pry guys from Utah and Idaho schools that they have personal ties to. The area and universities have major ties to religion in that region as well and I have a feeling that this has some weight in the discussion as to why he would stay out west.

I don't think there's anything really telling here. I suspect Stanford interviewed because it's worth it to keep his name out there and it's always wise to expand your network to include someone like Urbz.

But he's a BSU grad and, given the stepping stone nature of that job, I could see him making the choice to stick around for a few years and see is Harsin leaves as opposed to going to OSU.

If anyone can appreciate the alumni pull this year, it's Harbaugh.... I mean Michigan.

As I recall, he was offer the same position at Vanderbilt by Derek Mason and turned that down as well a few weeks ago. No matter...I somehow imagine Meyer giving a monologue about Ohio State and his vision which has a glimmer of Arthur Jensen's speech from "Network" in it, leaving prospective candidate sitting there, bewildered and turned off. Someone will take the job at some point anyway though.

because of the personal connection and the fact that OSU is loaded at QB for the next few years. Maybe his dad told him that Urban is a jerk to work with?

As an OSU fan I would have loved this hire, one that might have the team not skip a beat. Being a graduate of BSU, relocation, and his future plans (probably looking for his next move to be a HC job) all kept him away though. No idea who Meyer will hire.

as "ANYHOO" but there is something attractive about rendering it as an anagram of the spelling of the intended word. I suppose colloquialisms by definition defy standardization.
