Mike Rice coaching AAU girls

Submitted by newfoundhbomb on

someone please tell me how this guy can coach in any capacity.  Yes i know its his daughters team but i would think after getting exposed as the piece of shit coach that you are, you would take some time away from coaching to work on your anger management.

One of my moles is watching Mike Rice coach 12 year old girls at Holmdel High in NJ right now as crazy as ever yelling @ both refs and kids

Just this afternoon Rice told a 12 year old girl,"I can't even look at you" and the ref told my guy he would have T'd him up 2x if it was HS

Whether it is a 18-22-year old player whose playing time you own (not to mention you're the one giving him a recommendation for future jobs) or a 12-year-old girl you are physically stronger than, the power dynamic is the same: you're the one in charge. If he abuses it with those more likely able to stand up to him, he'll likely abuse it with those less able to do so.

If true, this is absolutely absurd.

According to The Asbury Park Press, Rice coaching this AAU team isn't news as he's been involved with his daughter Katie's team for some time. Also, according to the paper, parents of girls on the AAU team pushed back on Twitter after Deadspin's report surfaced Sunday, defending Rice and claiming distortion on the part of the contributor.

"The Deadspin report is a gross misrepresentation of the facts," a person close to the AAU team told SportsNet New York. "The team's parents are fully behind Coach Rice and his instruction of their daughters."

Yep. Odd world we live in.

This sounds like the plot of a cheesy feel-good comedy starring The Rock or Martin Lawrence. Coach needs anger management. Coach volunteers with preteen girls. Mean coach makes them cry at first, but the girls make him realize that he's a softy at heart. There is definitely a scene where they put makeup on him and one where the coach and girls all sing a girly song together...maybe something like a Katy Perry cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. If Hollywood makes this movie, I'm getting a cut.

THANK YOU for this.

I swear I did not realize this existed (if I did, I would have noted that this movie deserves more than 4.8 stars out of ten on imdb), except maybe on a subconcious level. I originally pictured just the Rock in this role, but then was trying to think of someone else who makes ridiculous movies. Please don't tell me there are also scenes with makeup and Martin Lawrence singing with the girls.

Hollywood is a beautiful place because the suits in Hollywood predicted the fall and redemption of Mike Rice 8 years ago. Amazing.

Someone needs to photoshop Mike Rice into this movie poster btw.

Literally the last thing I would have guessed he'd be doing a week or two later.

Everybody deserves a chance to grow and a chance at redemption.  Everything Rice does will be done under a magnifying glass; it's not like he has any "wiggle room" to lapse into his former behaviors.

I'm all about second chances. However, usually the person wanting the second chance needs time to go through the hit rock bottom-reflect-work your way back process.  Let him go through anger management and soul-searching and apply to coach NEXT year.

Why would he be more reluctant to T a coach up at a lower level? Arguably easier in my view. Maybe don't give the other team the advantage but just throw him out.
