I would go easy on Leach worshipping.

This is a coach who has a player who is about to be charged with assault and is allowed to play next week. There are another group of players who punched a bunch of people at a party and none of them have had any suspensions yet (they are letting the "law work itself out").

I am pretty sure only Mike Leach could give those sorts of replies in a presser and make it work for him, and it is indeed gold every time.

Hopefully, WSU's lives as they know them do change. I mean, that's one way to motivate, with a brutally honest presser, right?

Love every second of that, especially his comments about participation trophies. There is no place in the world for participation trophies. You either win or lose. Simple as that.

Honestly, I don't think most 7 year olds even associate the trophy with the game they've just played. When my kids were 7, they tried like hell to win, knew the score, knew to rub it in if they won when coming off the field, cried like three year olds if they lost, and then got super excited for the trophy.

while this is true, it comes in time. sometimes you let the little kid win because letting them enjoy themselves is more important than teaching a life lesson. Sometimes you have to hunker down on your point and teach even when it's not fun. my 5 year old son got his participation trophy for soccer this spring, and he deserved it just for participating, because he cried on the sidelines his entire first practice in his mommy's arms. because he's 5. however, when we're playing monopoly junior and he freaks out and storms off when he's down to his last dollar, we sit down and have a talk. when they're just learning what they're doing, it can't be "we need to teach these kids how to lose!" all the time. when they know what they're doing a little more, that's when you tell them to suck it up. eventually they learn.

Listen to the actual words of Bobby's speech - he made it all about HIM and the embarrassment over losing that HE felt. They were letting HIM down.

Bo would never have made it all about him ... "No coach is more important than the team..."

I don't doubt for a second that Bo yelled his head off when his players screwed up on the field or in practice - if it was the right way to motivate a player. But he didn't go into orbit because a player did something that was a personal affront to him. His overriding interest was in getting his team to do what it didn't think it could - not for his glory, but for theirs.
