Mike Florio of PFT still cannot accept that Jim Harbaugh left the NFL

Submitted by Maizen on

Via CFT, Harbaugh separately complained that the NCAA makes up the rules as it goes. Of course, the NFL has been accused from time to time of doing the same thing.

But the NCAA seems to be even worse. For Harbaugh, the fact that he never ended up on the wrong side of the league office’s we’ll-do-what-we-want approach to rules enforcement reinforces that perception.

Which brings me (finally) to the broader, spinning-it-forward point. If Harbaugh has become sufficiently exasperated with the NCAA after only one season with Michigan, how long will it be until the guy who never stays at a job more than four years returns to the NFL?

Hmm.  I hate the NCAA but love Michigan Football. I do not need to love both to be a Michigan fan.  I am certain Jim sees it the same way.

If anything Harbaugh feeds off this stuff re the NCAA.

Also, has any narrative coming from NFL writers about Harbaugh been true yet? He won't leave the NFL for college....nope. His wife won't move from the Bay Area...false. He hates recruiting...uh, he just scheduled 38 satellite camps.

These guys are a joke.

And finally, it's amazing how Harbaugh moving up the career ladder quickly is somehow evidence he doesn't want to stay in one place for more than 4 years. Most good coaches do the same thing until they settle into the job they really want, which for Harbaugh is clearly Michigan.

Have an upvote for a clear and concise statement of how much bullshit has been shat about Harbaugh. When Harbaugh first took the job, I accepted that he's probably be gone in 5 years back to the NFL. I hoped that he would stick around because he is good and enjoys it here. Now I hope he sticks around just to make these blowhards wrong forever.

Oh darn, I just realized I've never been at a job for more than 4 years. I didn't realize I was such a flight risk. Jim Harbaugh should have stayed at SD for 10 years IMO.

This will never end, this barely audible (most of the time) but constant undertone of beat writers and insiders (supposed insiders) that seem to be unable to accept that anyone would have a compelling reason to leave the NFL once there.

That, and I am sure Harbaugh has made clear in his language and actions that he intends to hang around in Ann Arbor a good long while, so I would love to know what cues Florio has missed or if there is some assumption being made that liking this position would necessarily mean less griping about the NCAA. I think Harbaugh makes these statement because he cares basically, and would like to see some changes. Why not advocate for them?

metric fuckton (I learned that from the Hatter) of speculation after we win our next NC?

"Well, Harbaugh has pushed Michigan to the top of the NCAA mountain, the only place for him to go now is back to the NFL for the Superbowl win"

You read that story, and you don't mention the one thing most worth mentioning?  (Perhaps I missed it and it was discussed days or weeks ago).

“Football gets the majority of the scrutiny and the rules that are intended to hurt the student-athlete and it makes no sense,” Harbaugh said, via ESPN.com. “That’s why I’m pointing this out because some of these other sports aren’t getting it. . . . Let's take lacrosse for example.  White sport, rising, affluent sport. Recruit ’em in the eighth grade, dark period for a couple days in August, and it’s a totally different situation.”

I suppose there's no way to discuss this quote without it delving ino politics, but...wow.  Good for Mr. Harbaugh for saying that out loud.

Is probably the worst radio guy I have ever heard. At least the other blowhards on the air seem like they enjoy life. This guy seems like he's always in a bad mood and is an asshole.

Just wait. Harbaugh will be here 10 years and these articles will still be out there. NFL people just can't accept they are wrong sometimes.

If Harbaugh were to mouth off to the NFL league offices about rules and regulations like he does to the NCAA, he'd have forfeited half his salary in fines by now. Not to mention the hot water he'd be in with team ownership once they get dinged. If anything, this freedom to voice opinion and impact change for the greater good of your own operation is a reason to remain in college, not the NFL.

This whole argument is completely stupid. You can separately hate the NCAA's bullshit, and love the game of college football. That doesn't even factor in the fact that he's the HEAD FUCKING FOOTBALL COACH AT HIS ALMA MATER, a place that BOTH HIS FATHER AND HIS IDOL COACHED AT!!!!!!!!!! Sorry for cursing, but that really steams me.

people in that comments thread talking about how Harbaugh was "cast out" of the Pros. Wonder if those folks realize that the 49ers got SMOKED by the Cleveland freaking Browns last year. Also, they're the only team predicted to be worse than the Browns this year. Yeah. Cast out. I'm home sick with a stomach bug and laughing reeeeeeally hurts, but I can't stop

I'll never understand the 'never stays at a job more than four years argument'. He went from a D-2 school to a BCS bottom dweller to the NFL. Only a sample size of three and each clearly a promotion. Do people not understand that or just choose to ignore it.

You can look at the resume of just about any football coach and find the same progression.

Nick Saban's stays prior to Alabama:

Toledo - 1 year

MSU - 5 years

LSU - 5 years

Miami - 2 years

According to Florio, there's no way Saban lasts past 2011 in Tuscaloosa.
