Miguel Cabrera reaches 2,000 hits at age 31

Submitted by yossarians tree on

Miguel needed four hits going into today's game, and he got them. With two outs in what would likely be the Tigers last at-bat in the bottome of the 8th, Torii Hunter singled to extend the inning, bringing up Cabrera.

In style, Miggy drilled the first pitch into the left field seats for number 2,000. The man should be promoted to Interstellar League Baseball, but for now I will watch every at-bat I can of this dude.

I see ya big fella!!  It's a privlige to watch him play.  I hope he has no lingering issues from his groin surgery because I feel he's just getting better and better every year.

I admire the way he approached the problems he had before. and put it behind him. He will go down as one of hte greats before his careeer is over.

There was something strangely poetic about his 2,000th hit being a no-doubt home run over the fence in left-center, at least in my opinion. Miguel has been a huge part of the Tigers' run of success in these last several years and it has been a blast to have him on this team. His contributions are always much appreciated obviously.

He just...hits. That's all there is to it. But not only that, he USUALLY hits with power. He's the worst nightmare of every pitcher in baseball.

Congrats to Miggy!

Should sign this guy to a long term extension....

...wait...

p.s. shows just how crazy good you have to be to get 3000 hits - the Boggs, Brett, Gwynn Jr class.  Rose at 4200+ is just unfathomable.  Pudge got to 2844.

I was in KC when Brett got 3000. It was actually during an away game, but after the team returned there was a George Brett night to commemorate the night. I was one of the first 1000 fans in Kaufman stadium and have my commemorative ball at my parents house.

With the amount of money in baseball today it's doubtful a top player will ever play the number of years needed to reach Rose's feat. The player's lack the financial incentive (they'll already be filthy rich well before that) and the owners will be more reluctant to keep players many years past their prime (obvious current exceptions aside). At least that's my thinking.

I think it can be broken because of the following:

Some of the elite players are reaching the majors earlier after being drafted.

Amature scouting and development has improved tremendously making it easier to fast track some guys.

Players are in better shape than before due to advances in nutrition science and the multi hundred million dollar incentives to stay in shape.

Medical science advancement has has helped players miss less time than injury.

Some players will inevitably try to eek out extra years given the financial incentives

Inevitably there will be expansion. You can argue this won't add more potential record breakers to the mix (expanding the number of players does not  expand the number of elite players) but it will make water down the pitching that elite players have to face.

Rose only has 160 HRs.  All those years, all those hits, and he hit just 6.5 HRs a year.  Agreed, he probably won't best Rose's total hits, but he's on pace to beat Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Barry Bonds, and Stan Musial.  Not in any one statistic, but taken as whole for Hits, HRs, and OPS.  Given the ball being used for the majority of his career, Ty Cobb certainly needs to be in the discussion.

Cabrera has his work cut out for him if he wants to be the best hitter ever.  But if he stays healthy.....

and will certainly rank as one of the greatest Tiger hitters ever.

For comparison, Al Kaline got his 2,000th hit in 1959. He was 25.
