East Lansing - 68 couches
alternate headline: man does job
East Lansing - 68 couches
Interestingly, Massey is going with a 78% win probability for Michigan and a 68-64-ish performance for an esitimate. Here is a quick comparison using conference play only:
|Points Per Game||63.5||68.2|
|Points Per Poss.||1.147||1.071|
|Opp. Eff. FG%||48.30%||42.60%|
|Assist / Turnover||1.2||1.1|
If we can get offensive rebounds and keep control of the ball, I could see something like what Massey went with, but it will not be easy to do without some rather gritty defense down the stretch. Not much of a prediction, but I could see this game as being a few possessions in either direction. It should be a close one. The optimist in me, however, goes 70-67 Michigan.
I'm a huge fan of stats, and really like analyzing them - but it seems like when they play us you can toss them out the window. I really hope we are geared up for this game mentally.
GET FIRED UP WHOO!
I don't know man... too much anger, too much lack of perspective. I have always been more partial to the speak softly and carry an armored tank division type speech...
Either that or he could say: who am I? Petey Pie mutha fucka!
Wonder what those stats are for past seven games, comparatively? Hoping for smart play by the team and a much-needed win. Go Blue!
67-62. Tight all the way, Nix too much underneath, literally & figuratively.
I have lost faith. 79-63, Bad Guys.
I want to see how the team reacts. State will punch them in the mouth; will they punch back or cower in the corner like they did at the Breslin?
If you lose this game I can guarantee that you won't be any higher than a 3. Then you still have the Indiana & the BIG tourny. So lose today and you are probably looking at probably 2 more losses.
Tommy: Let’s think about this for a sec, Ted. Why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I’m listening.
Tommy: Here’s the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box ’cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: ‘Course it does. Why shouldn’t it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What’s your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn’t a crazy glue sniffer? “Building model airplanes” says the little fairy; well, we’re not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that’s all it takes. The next thing you know, there’s money missing off the dresser, and your daughter’s knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shi*. That’s all it is, isn’t it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer’s sake, for your daughter’s sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.
Umm... If we don't beat at least one of MSU or IU, then we aren't going to be a 2 seed. Lunardi has us as a 3 seed right now.
I'd rather not play on Thursday of the Big Ten Tournament but that's just me
Do not listen to Lundardi. His bracket sucks. Half of the time it does't even follow the bracketing rules the committee uses.
Yeah but he's got a pretty good record. Look at his final brackets compared to the actual brackets.
Him and Palm have a habit of making some suspicious last second changes to their brackets. Yahoosports' big board to me looks pretty accurate and its also easy to read. Lunardi yesterday had the Vols moving into the bracket after an awful loss to Georgia. That is not in any way logical. He has Alabama as the first team out. No way that is correct. The committee over the years has made it clear with the Pac12 that major conferences teams with nice records, but no good wins and alot of bad losses will not get the benefit of the doubt.
Nothing in the past month to suggest that we will play good basketball against a good physical defense. I hope we have a little pride and stand up for ourselves, but I dont see how that will happen all of a sudden. State wins by 10, disgust
A wide range of outcomes, some desirable and some not, are within the range of probability.
Most likely though and either way I will likely be at Comcast tomorrow picking up a new remote.
This team is guilty against physical teams until proven innocent. Hate to say it, but I agree with the prediction, although I think it'll be a single digit loss.
Hoping we can pull one off, but the way we've been playing lately doesn't bode well. I just don't see us holding up against their big men and against their tight defense. If we can limit turnovers and hit some outside shots, we'll have a good chance, but it'll be tight. If we don't, we could be in for a long afternoon.
That's basically exactly what I was going to put:
It pains me to think so, of course. But hey, we still have a great university right? And spring's coming up.
STAEE by a couch and a half.
Lil Brah 77
It's barely 9 in the a.m. in MN and the interwebs are causing my PC to heave to and fro like the TV in Poltergeist. Dunno if we will win or lose, but let the cliches fly.
It's a gut check game.
This is where the rubber meets the road (or court)
and my all-time favorite:
"If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking 'til you do suck seed." (Sylvester T. Cat)
Prediction: Kittens 62 Snowlakes 59
75-63 bad guys. and lots of excited brahs yelling on the way out of crisler.
Score doesn't matter. M loses by 12
I think it will be a close game till the end with either team having a chance to win. I am picking 67-62 win for Michigan because of the home court.
That being said, I think that it is very unlikely that we lose by double digits at Crisler as some have suggested. But, if any of you think that might be the case you could win a lot of money to soften the gut-punch of a Michigan loss (most places have us as a 4 point favorite).
I predict I will take my son to the museum because it will be less painful to watch.
i predict izzo will stomp, whine, cry, scream, and a range of other things designed to get the most out of the refs.
also, michigan will win, by a bucket or two.
and if we have potential for a tournament run.
Good guys 68-65
This time when Nix tells Trey Burke, "you're soft", Burke retorts, "that's not what your girl said".
Michigan gives 100% for 40 minutes and discovers the antidote to soft play. Michigan 78, State 70.
with anyone's thang.
Da Bears, 432 to 6.
Have we not learned about creating bad juju?
78-71. Unless Michigan throws in some new wrinkles and plays an effective zone. McGary has to be the X Factor. I hope he plays more than 8 minutes like he did in Happy Valley.
I predict there isnt a person alive who has a clue what we're going to see in five hours. This team has played fantastic at home (but the students are on home break). Has recently enjoyed success against MSU (but got curb-stomped by them 10 days ago). Was rated 4th in the country then managed to blow a 15 point second half lead to a winless team in the B1G.
I doublt even Coach Beilein knows what's coming next. If you told me we were going to win by 20 I wouldnt be surprised (the team is that good when it wants to be). If you told me we lost by 20 I wouldn't be surprised (the team can play that soft).
I have no fucking idea. Truly none.
EDIT: Did Fearless Leader post a prediction? If so I missed it.
There should be enough students there to at least fill the bleacher seats.
I agree with this completely
No idea. Hoping for a good game from our guys.
Protect home court.
I want to say 90-80 Michigan but if I'm wrong I won't be too upset. I still really like these young kids and happy where the program is directed.
Michigan - 70
MSU - 58
Michigan 12 - Sparty 10
Gibbons hits a three pointer with 5 seconds to go.
Am I doing this right?
Funniest thing I've read all morning; well played.
Now, get your ass over here and clean the coffee and spit off my couch.
Today, the basketball gods pay Michigan back for the Wiscy game, and maybe even the Evan Turner game.
STAEE is ahead for the entire game, but Michigan fights back and gets the ball back when it's 65-63 STAEE with five seconds left. STAEE pressures the inbound, the ball goes to GRIII, who is pressured and heaves the ball toward the basket with the clock reading under one second.
Michigan 66, STAEE 65.
This game becomes yet another "turning point" in Michigan's season, and the momentum is back. Tom Izzo goes Bobby Knight after the game, and ESPN decides, in a stunning turn of events, to actually criticize him.
And Dan Dakich suddenly dies of a heart attack and Dick Vitale loses his ability to speak.
EVERYONE hates Dakich and Vitale.
I don't know if this has already been said..but Shane Morris will be at the game today. I'm more than sure he will be back to recruiting hard. Drake Harris will be there again.. last week Wilton Speight got the chance to get in his ear and now Morris. The pressure is on, and it will be a great atmosphere.
in the last 5 days since Tuesday. The only legitimate chance we have to win is if we play tough D the whole game. That will help overcome our inside shortcomings against State. We also need Hardaway to have a big game. He's been way too inconsistent. It goes without saying Stauskas and Robinson also have to play well.
Following the infamous 2.4 seconds at Wisconsin, the question was whether they had "learned a lesson" etc. etc. etc. Not so much. Instead, they have proven "fragile." For M to win given recent history would be quite remarkable.
State by 5 to 10. Yuuk.
Wow, I'm wondering where the "get the fuck off my court" attitude is on the team and I see it's not with a lot of the fans here either. Where's that from? State hasn't been playing exactly great since their win over the Wolverines. And Appling is struggling in a big way.
The Wolverines have two choices. They can come out full of self-doubt or they can come out with a new resolve. I predict Morgan leads the bigs in establishing a tough ass attitude today and I hope the band wagon realizes a "me against the world" attitude means no re-entry for those who jumped off.
The question is team attitude and team performance. Both Burke and Hardaway alluded to it this week. Doesn't matter what or often they give the rah rah speech....team has to perform. Long and short...talk is cheap. We can hope M wins, but realistically smart money is with State. However poorly MSU has been playing they did not blow a 15 point lead in 10 minutes and lose to a team that had not beaten a BIG team.
It isn't about "rah-rah" speeches, it's about playing with force, confidence and a singular desire to win. If they are weak and believe that 10 minutes of basketball is their defining moment (as you think), they won't compete today.
Nothing more. I just think they are young and have hit both a mental and a physical wall. They have been unable to finish a game. As a team they are either going to collectively get sick of it and get their backbone up or not. Hoke would call it toughness i expect. I have not seen toughness out of this team especially lately. Chances of getting them tough in light of recent history are small. You're saying the same thing. But this goes back farther than PSU game.
Not about coaching. I think they are well coached. Not about talent. I think they are talented. It is about making up their mind not to take any more of it as a team. That comes from inside. Because they have not displayed it, chances are they won't. It ain't a water faucet.
You're right, we are saying the same thing. I heard Coach K (calling him that over spelling, not over affection) talk about winning programs and winning teams. He said winning programs can overcome much more, they have a resilience grown and passed down from class to class. Michigan is in the process of building that and given their youth, I remain optimistic that they still can.
1. The typical basketball whiners will be out in full force all game. One of them will probably have a stroke. (This may not be a bad thing).
2. Someone will post a FIRE BEEEEELINE!!!!one!1!!! Thread. (Complete with incorrect spelling of Beilein's name).
3. Multiple posters will be banned.
4. The trolls will invade.
I have a bad feeling about this game and I think you're going to have a rough night. Obviously I hope I'm wrong, but it might be a good idea to take the afternoon/evening off.
Incredibly happy to be wrong.
Bad guys win. Belein has lost this team
You got the misspelling part but you forgot to say he should be fired per OMG Shirtless' description.
How being critical means you are unsupportive and "trolling"
You didn't even spell his name right.
Wasn't me. I was pointing out that several people on here think that high expectations, and failure to meet those, equals lack of support.
My bad. He got negged for poor spelling.
Another Board meltdown after an ugly game.
Because the fans are adjusting expectations and maybe half the folks are expecting DOOM anyway. Pleasantly surprised if UM wins and wondering what region and seed if losing.
I have is scared. Scared that this team will throw in the towel. Or scared that this team will fight back, but it won't be enough. Just scared.
Blue and Maize tinted glasses: The team plays with pride. Comes out strong but starts to lose it around half time, letting State back in with about 2 mins to go. Tied 32-32 at the half. McGary plays hard but gets three fouls in the first half including a BS charge call. State comes out and takes the lead to eight before Hardaway goes on a three shooting spree knocking down four in a row. Burke has a steal+dunk on the following posession and Michigan is up 46-44 with about 10 to go. McGary gets his fourth foul and State splits the pair. Robinson responds with a jam and Stauskas hits a three. Michigan starts to open it up with 5 to go. State plays the foul game but can't get back in it.
Good guys: 71 Boogers: 64
Back of mind "Oh fuck, we lost to Penn State" voice: The team starts slow. Hardaway does nothing. Stauskas misess everything. Robinson doesn't exist. Burke has 7 turnovers.
Bad Defence: 55 Asshats: 76
There is probably as much reason for hope as any time in the last 15 years...But yeah, impending doom is the feeling in my stomach. Hope I am wrong.
State by at least 20. There's just no way we compete inside and State learned exactly what they needed to do last game.
State by 10. Trey caries the team, as usual, not enough though.
WORK OUT FOR YOU?!?!?!?!
If you had asked me Monday I would've said Michigan by 6-8. But, Penn State carved us up and it wasn't end of shot clock heaves somehow dropping.
People seem to just say our defense is bad without understanding why. From what I've seen, the lack of our perimeter guys to stay in front of their men has killed us all year. Drive and dish or drive and kick.
Add in a lack of killer instinct and you get the Penn State debacle.
Nix and Payne eat us alive. Harris knocks down a bunch of open 3s and our offense sputters when faced with a hard-nosed in your face D again.
...and that's how they got all those open looks, how the hell can we stay in front of Appling?
It might make sense to go box-and-1 on Harris and pack it in against Payne/Nix.
The problem I have is we have zero confidence right now, coming off a demoralizing loss, and they've had an entire week to prepare.
Everyone just visualize being extremely happy after the game and pray for the best.
nellies... Almost every other top 5 team has lost one of the ones we just lost. Just because Lunatic Lunardi has us as a 3 seed doesn't meant he world is ending and we lose out the rest of our schedule... We win today with an energized crowd and a reenergized team. I can't wait to see the reactions when we send Sparty home weeping.
Whining, entitled fans will owe Michigan Basketball an apology after they beat the shit out of lil. Go Blue!!!
You are a realist, you are a band wagoner? It doesn't mean I won't be cheering my ass off or pissed when they lose, just being realistic.
I seriously stared at that word thinking "what the fuck does denile mean?"
Continues to struggle on defense, close, but too many mistakes....
I feel like we are in the midst of an 2012 Illinois-like skid. Ever since that freaking half court shot this team has not been the same. I don't know what the hell happened to the defense. They went from 32nd in Defensive efficiency to 61st. These last 7 games the defense has to be one of the worst in the country. This team has lost confidence and I don't see them getting it back against a team we don't match up well with. MSU kicked the living crap out of us last game, and with our Students on break we won't get the same kind of boost. I think MSU wins by 20+.
We come out strong playing with emotion. Build an early 10+ point lead, MSU battles back to get it under 10 at halftime. 2nd half, MSU wears us down a little, but the game goes down to the wire. MSU just has a little too much energy at the end as the schedule makers gave them a huge advantage with a week off to rest and prepare.
MSU 73 Michigan 70
Michigan 112. State 111. Double OT.
My prediction is based on how many points I think Michigan's defense allows plus my desire for them to win.
It's amusing that everyone who thinks Michigan might lose is being labeled a Troll.
I forecast an afternoon of frustration, then hope, then joy, then frustration and ending with unwarranted anger and depression. Sparty will show us how to play defense and with passion.....we will demonstrate that we have more talent and show spurts of dominance and the result will be 78-70 Couch Burners.
There is only pain and I'm not talking about the spartan forward that resembles a 41 year old man.
Either they learned to play some defense or we could see a repeat of the last game.. Go blue.
Michigan will not be able to handle the sparty downlow. 76 Michigan State 61 Michigan
