Michigan/PSU Postgame Thread

Post-game thoughts...share away!

EDIT: I'm choosing to share some of my thoughts in this OP because some drunken jackass wants to neg every post. Fine by me, all you can do is downvote this thread and that does nothing to me or my thoughts as far as visibility.

There are waaaaaaaay too many of you guys freaking out and overlooking that we just had the toughest stretch of ANY team in college basketball in terms of scheduling. You're also overlooking the fact that we didn't have our best big man for ANY of it...and didn't have him today. J-Mo doesn't do a ton, but he plays defense and gets rebounds. That's exactly what most of you who are bitching...are bitching about. Why do you leave out that caveat?

Michigan allowed 70 points ONE time in the 6 games prior to Morgan's injury. This is where I feel the defense "clicked" for Michigan and we were playing MUCH better on the defensive end.

Also, you fail to note the fact that we just played THREE top 10 teams in 10 days! ...and the other game? @ Wisconsin. One of the toughest places to play in the country.

So don't overlook those two HUGE facts just so you can whine and complain. Sidenote, no other B1G contender will have a stretch like we did. It's unfair and unfortunate.

BS. Indiana just crushed

BS. Indiana just crushed Purdue yesterday. You just gave every loser excuse in the book. This team has played like garbage for three weeks.

Yeah, but Purdue played awful against IU. Penn State just played one of their best games of the season.

Feels like everyone

has played their best game against Michigan lately. Maybe, Michigan just isn't playing great defense.

Stll, this team is down, and it's hard to blame them after Wisconsin and MSU. Good time to regroup mentally.

Only problem...

Their gauntlet is NOTHING like Michigans.

This is why I say FUCK YOU B1G Schedule Makers!

Just yesterday I looked at IU, MSU and Ohio's schedules...NONE of them have a stretch like us. Sure, they have a tough stretch, but every team does every year.

None of them have anything like @ IU, OSU, @ Wisky, @ MSU...none of them have a bunch of 9pm games. They all get an Iowa or PSU tossed in their "gaunlet." ANNND...they all get MUCH more rest/prepartation than we did between games.

It doesn't even compare IMO. They've got normal tough B1G stretches...we had hell.

I said this yesterday. We could have a run from the Sweet 16 to the National Championship that won't be nearly as hard as what that stretch was.

...Did they play without Zeller?

Because we've been playing with Morgan.

Is Morgan = Zeller? Hell no. But losing your big man in the middle is going to kill you in term of defense and rebounds. He was also a captain.

Actually, it should be easy

Actually, it should be easy to get up for this game. It was a chance to prove that the game against Michigan State was only an anomaly. I don't think that was proven today.

There's

Over the top negativism and then there are legitimate worries. The way this team plays defense is a legitimate worry and could easily prevent a deep tourney run.

No it's just being negative...

Because none of you guys are taking into account that Morgan isn't healthy, starting, etc.

From the Iowa-Illinois games...we were playing AWESOME defense. Burke was all over the place, THJ was locking people down and even McGary was getting steals and streaking down the floor for 2 points.

Morgan got hurt and all of that changed.

We also played IU on the road, OSU at home, Wisconsin on the road and MSU on the road in like 2 weeks. Name one team in the country that could do that and come out alive.

The Miami Heat don't count.

You know what else we were

You know what else we were playing from the Iowa-Illinois games?  Pretty crappy teams.

It's absolutely ridiculous to blame this all on Morgan.  Over the last 5 games, everyone except Burke has regressed in one way or another.  Not having Morgan isn't responsible for terrible on-ball defense from our guards, lack of movement on offense, Hardaway going 1-11, GR3 being invisible, etc.

Yeah, Indiana, OSU, Wisconsin, and MSU was a tough stretch, but we were supposed to be the #1 team in the country.  Most #1 teams wouldn't go 1-3 against any four teams.  We're not playing good basketball right now regardless of Morgan.  That said, there is plenty of time to turn it around.

Are you as negative in real

Are you as negative in real life as you are on this board?  Not to be rude, but you seem like such a downer all the time.

We won, we're 22-4, which is an amazing record (a better record than the '89 and '92 teams had at this point, and equal to the '93 team's record) . . . let's try to appreciate it.

I just said that there is

I just said that there is plenty of time to turn around our recent play, but it has been tough to watch, and I see no reason to blow sunshine like Mr. Yost.  It is possible to think we have a good team and be frustrated at the same time.

The uniforms were great, but

The uniforms were great, but I wish Adidas had taken the time to replicate the numerals on the 1968 uniforms as well. There are a lot of small details on them that make them unique, not just standard varsity block letters like we saw today.

I only got to see the last

I only got to see the last five minutes or so.  Were the fouls a result of typical home big ten officiating, or was it a decently called game?

we benefited from a few calls

but in general we drove the basket more this game.  GRIII got hacked several times around the rim; to go along with his 4 alley oop dunks.  stauskus got fouled a few times around the basket too.

The officiating was tight,

The officiating was tight, but it was tight both ways, which I think favors Michigan quite a bit (removes some of the physicality from the game, which we struggle with).  Overall I think it was decent, Penn State had their fair share of trips to the line too.

It beats the hell out of a combined 8 FG attemps in the previous two games.

We tried to drive and score a bit more I noticed this game too, which helped with the foul calls.  That was encouraging to see.

From the game preview here

From the game preview here and at UMHoops, it was obvious PSU commits the most fouls o any Big Ten team. I think today's FT shooting speaks more to that than UofMs ability to get fouled.

We need defense and a Novak

We need defense and a Novak type leader. Not a great performance today, but they showed some signs of improvement on the offensive end.

That's J-Mo

Morgan provides us with rebounding AND he's our anchor on defense. He's clearly missed down there in the middle.

McGary, Horford, and Morgan

McGary, Horford, and Morgan combined for 0 points. This is a bad thing. On the bright side, Trey Burke exists.

Eh, Stauskas was pretty quiet

Eh, Stauskas was pretty quiet offensively in the first half and his perimeter defense was lousy today.  Nevertheless, he stepped up when it counted and was the difference in turning what could've been a horrifying upset at home into a comfortable, if unsatisfying, victory.

GRIII performance was nice.

GRIII performance was nice.  We need it against superior competition, though.  THJ maybe will find his shot again with the week off (it was fugly early one before hitting a three or two in the second half).  I'm personally fine with the Vogrich minutes.  He didn't suck as most here would have us believe.  Also these next 6-7 days are helpful to Morgans ankle.  We need him and lately when he's been in it's been a little rusty looking.  W is a W.  Penn St. may not be a good team but they have some guys who can ball; we did just fine.  If one expects a 30 point blowout in this conference, one may want to recalibrate in their minds how college basketball really works.

Vogrich was personally

Vogrich was personally responsible for giving up two threes shortly after he came in.  There is a reason he hasn't been able to see the floor and he should have stayed on the bench IMO.

One of those threes

definitely wasn't his fault.  McGary, again, got caught overplaying on someone at the top of the key and Vogrich had to collapse to fill the void.  He was late closing out the guy he had to leave in the corner, but that all happened because over the original bad play by one of the other defenders.  I'm not sure what happened on the other three mentioned, but McGary's enthusiasm puts him out of position too much and holes open up in the D.

Defense and rebounding were awful

That was the only game on the B10 schedule we could win playing like that.  I really felt this team would come out on fire today to get the taste of the last few games out of their mouths.  I was wrong.  Terrible defense and rebounding.  This team needs to get back on track soon or March might not be as fun as it could be.

My thoughts exactly.

I thought we would come out and jump all over PSU defensively (wishfull thinking, maybe) and really shut them down.

We can't keep rolling along thinking that we can beat everyone just with offense.

I think the concerning thing

I think the concerning thing about GR3 is that he seems to get points almost exclusively in transition, alley oops, put-backs, offensive boards, etc.  When good teams take that away, he has a lot of difficulty creating any offense for himself.

So your argument is that

So your argument is that Robinson is active against bad defensive teams and not active against good defensive teams?  That's not what I'm seeing.  Today, almost all of his points were when PSU was forced to collapse, leading to an easy dunk, or from an alley-oop in transition. His athleticism is definitely an asset, but in our half-court sets, he didn't look much different today than he did against MSU.

Right.  Good teams do and are

Right.  Good teams do and are going to take that part of "our" game away.  But it's been happening and it became apparent weeks ago that his points came from clean-ups/transition.  He does have a tough time creating for himself but what's more disconcerning is the fact that this team and offense in general can't create for him; maybe a rip on Beilein a bit but the guy needs to be a part of our offense/scoring, somehow, someway.

movement

simple movement can create shots, ie. backdoor cuts.  periodically, i would like to see GRIII and stauskus criss-cross along the baseline to try and mix things up instead of just standing in the corner.

going back a ways, i remember richard rellford going back and forth continually along the baseline.  he seemed to get a couple alley oops per game just by doing that.

I disagree...

Yes, that's how he gets a lot of his points, but that's because there is so much attention elsewhere that he's able to find his way behind the defense. He's a SMART basketball player. That's a good thing.

He's definitely shown he can create for himself. In the game at Illinois he had 2-3 nice drives from outside the 3-point line and got in around the basket.

He can do it, he just doesn't need to.

As long as he's playing with a passion and he's aggressive, we shouldn't bitch.

People look to his dunks and easy lay-ups and see negative, it's just what his role is on this team. Take Stauskas and Hardaway off the floor and I guarantee you see him drive more. Next year, you'll see him drive more.

He's a freshman and the 4th option for much of the game. He's in no position to be driving unless it's there. Especially since Stauskas does it so much.

When you have Burke and THJ, you can't have two other guys, especially freshman, pounding the rock that much.

Again, all GRIII needs to do is stay aggressive and stay physical.

Uniforms were good

Lack of point production from the big men. The big guys miss too many bunny shots. This will be our achilles heel.

They just finished a brutal stretch coming into this game so it's understandable that PSU would be a trap. Hopefully a week off and a better opponent in Illinois will get the team back on track.

We now have a full week off

We now have a full week off to rest and work on some issues before we begin the Illinois-Penn State-MSU-Purdue-Indiana final stretch (with MSU and Indiana at home). A week of rest and a final set of games that isn't DEATH will be good to build on going into the B1G tourney.

That and no game during the week.

I feel like we're likely to bow out early in the NCAA's

because we can't play defense and when the offense goes cold, we struggle. If we run into a good defensive team who can get hot from deep, we'll be in trouble

I feel like...

...you couldn't be more wrong.

This team has played GREAT defense when they've wanted to. Today they didn't have it. But they've turned it up at times this year. In fact, they had a 4-5 game stretch where they were the 2nd best defensive team in the league. Then J-Mo go hurt. That was huge.

Take Cody Zeller or Mason Plumlee away from their teams (defensively) and see how it affects them. Take Nix or that huge Johnson kid from Miami away from their teams and see how it affects them.

You lose a big man in the middle and it changes your entire defense. J-Mo was our Kendrick Perkins. Tough defense, a physical prescence, a few put backs, one decent offensive move per game and some rebounding. We need a healthy Morgan and you'd change your mind.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree...

But this team is far too talented.

Our biggest issues right now are finding a way to get rest/healthy and figuring out a way to get more rebounds.

Jordan Morgan is big in both of those, if he can get rested and healthy. We get more rebounds. With that, we need our entire rotation to get some rest this week. They're clearly worn down.

Talent wise, we're one of the 5, probably 3 most talented teams in the country. We're also well coached and when we're playing like we should...we don't rely on one player.

We have the PERFECT team to go DEEP in the tournament. IU to me is clearly #1. But I'd put Michigan and Miami right there for #2. Everyone else to me has BIG TIME flaws.

Just get healthy, get rested, get aggressive. Do those 3 things, we're a lot closer to Atlanta than most teams.

We may be talented offensively,

but we are weak defensively.  We give up easy, open outside shots, allow penetration and are only average rebounding.  Good defensive teams are going to take away a lot of our offensive.  We need to be able to do the same to theirs.

Sure, we caannn play great D

but most of the time we don't. Usually we play ok D and sometimes we play really bad D. Especially in big games we've seen the D fail to show up. I wouldn't put any money on us suddenly consistenly playing good defense once the tournament comes around. We get flustered on the big stage

I don't know about "great"

I don't know about "great" defensively. But they were playing with more confidence. Until the latter stages of this game, everyone on the floor was going on Stauskas whenever they could. And he knew it and was not playing aggressively, stopped moving his feet, etc. He looked better late. I think that charge call got him going.

The big thing from this game is that the guys who needed to feel good about their games with the layoff looming ... Stauskas and GRIII ... ended up probably feeling pretty good.

Need to work with bigs on

Need to work with bigs on defensive rotations. We're giving up layups on junior high sets like scissor cuts off the high post.

Thought Stauskas showed some toughness after a rough start. He dialed up his defensive intensity in the second half. And I thought that GRIII brought some nice energy.

My thoughts

Note: I only saw the 2nd half, I'm actually watching the 1st half now.

First off, good win. We needed a W more than anything.

Positives:
Obviously it was good to see Burke, Stauskas and GRIII playing well. Particularly the freshman. I also thought Coach B did a good job of mixing guys in, however, I would've liked to get Burke and GRIII more rest (especially in the 2nd half). Sometimes, I think we forget about GRIII in terms of a breather.

I LOVED that we mixed in zone. That was very good to see, we haven't run that nearly enough this year. I think we need to run some 2-3 in addition to the 1-3-1.

I also thought we handled the press as good as we've handled it all season.

What I liked most about what I saw was the edge that they played with. There was an anger that guys had...it was good to see.

Snowflakes:
We should've blown this team out. They're not good.

Even though we were at the line all game, they missed a number of calls.

McGary played what I think was his worst game of the season. Wasn't bad...he just wasn't effective. Hopefully he can bounce back against Illinois. I still think he plays too many minutes. He's a freshman and his minutes have gone up with J-Mo out. We HAVE to be comfortable playing Max B or McLimas for 3-4 minutes to give these other guys a rest.

Speaking of rest. Can we PLEASE play 2 bigs together so GRIII can sit? PLEASE! Kid played a GREAT game, but I'll be damned if we wear him out with extended minutes vs. the worst team in the conference.

We played Vogrich so THJ could sit a little bit (and yes, it hurt us...but so what, we won), why can't we play some of the post bench players a little bit so GRIII doesn't play so many minutes?

All in all, solid win. I like the mentality and the attitude we played with more than anything. This team IMO is going to be fine. In fact, I think this next game vs. Illinois will tell us a lot. A solid win then, then a blowout win over PSU and I truly think we win out the regular season.

GRIII

played 33 min.  i don't think that's overplaying him.  i do recall one of the earlier games when he played 40 min and was ineffective.

that said, bielfeldt could play 3 min per half to spell him; like spike does for burke.  just don't make those substitutions at the same time please.

I do...

For a freshman who is trying to keep his legs...33 mpg is far too much. Especially when he played 40 and 41 minutes vs. IU and OSU.

What's wrong with sitting him for 4-6 more minutes in the next couple of games so we can play 2 bigs? I think it would help us rebound as well.

Play 33+ vs. the elite teams. No need for him to be playing 33 minutes against the worst team in the conference.

You have to keep a couple

You have to keep a couple things in mind:

First, we had to make sure we won this game, and he was one of our top players.

Second, this was his first big game in awhile, so you want to keep him out there and maximize the good feeling for him.  No one wants to go to the bench when they're having a hot day.

Third, this was our only game in a 12-day span, so fatigue shouldn't be a concern going forward.

I've said this all week...

We need to be playing our bench more against PSU, Illinois, PSU than we have since early in the year when we were playing the directional Michigan's.

Just get these guys rested up/healthy. Everything post-PSU (round 2) will be more important than pre-PSU (round 2). Let's go at that stretch as close to 100% as we can.

Yeah, MSU looked amazing against Nebraska last night and against Illinois 2 weeks ago. MSU has 2 wins away from the Breslin that can actually be considered good, and one of them was at a neutral site. That means MSU has exactly 1 good road victory against Wisconsin. MSU is good, but they haven't proven much other than they play really well at the Bres

We need everyone to be

We need everyone to be involved and we'll be good.

For example, in the past 4 games it seemed GRIII and Stauskas disappeared, but our bigs -- specifically McGary -- were doing well.  Now, today, our bigs were not good -- missed layups and 0 points between McGary, Horford, and Morgan, but it was nice to see Stauskas and GRIII back.

If we can get that production from GRIII and Stauskas as well as our bigs, then we can go deep into the tournament.

Just how bad is our D?

From umhoops.com preview:

The Nittany Lions are shooting 40% on twos, 26% on threes for a 40% effective field goal percentage. All three of those shooting statistics rank last in the Big Ten. Penn State turns the ball over once every five offensive possessions, second worst in the Big Ten, and rebounds less than 30% of its misses in Big Ten play (9th B1G). Just how bad is Penn State’s offense? At .87 points per trip in league play, the Nittany Lions are on pace to be the worst Big Ten offense in the KenPom era (2003+) and the only team to score less than .9 points per trip other than 2004 Penn State.

PSU today: 44% 2pt, 33% 3pt, eFG = 54%, 1.05 PPP

This bears repeating: Big Ten

This bears repeating: Big Ten Geeks found, just before his injury, that Jordan Morgan was the league's best defender, according to "stops" generated when his man has the ball.

Not having Morgan has been a significant blow to our defense.

GR3 is a monster when he is

GR3 is a monster when he is allowed to run. When good defensive teams shut down the transition game GR3 struggles...and so does Michigan. Trey Burke as a passer makes Michigan Basketball scary. Trey is the reason we are in the BIG title hunt. If Trey can determine when to be "the guy" and when to distribute better, we could be in the NCAA title hunt.

Offense

Was a little better, still the verdict is out on how to beat Michigan. We still struggle mightily on defense. I hate saying this but not sure we beat Indiana or state, hate being negative, I'm sure people will flame bait me, this team is young and has little toughness. The tournament will be about our draw, that will depend how far we go.

Our "Bigs" discussion

What's up with Jordan Morgan?  I don't understand letting him play for 2 minutes then pulling him.  Either let him rest or play the guy.  He seemed to be quicker today than past games, so I was confused with him being benched.  A 75% Jordan Morgan is better than a healthy Horford.

Which brings up Horford.  What does he bring to this team?  He has little offensive game, as everytime he touches the ball he seems to panic.   And on defense he just gets pushed around.  He should not end this game with just one rebound.  He is just too soft to playing right now in my opinion.  I would love to see Bielfeldt play more.  Every time he is in the game, he seems to be crashing the board and pulling in offensive rebounds.

Lastly, anyone else feel like we should switch up our defense more?  Teams have figured out Michigan.  They put their center on the top of the key, and force Hardaway, Stauskas and Robinson to defend one on one in the paint which they struggle to do at times.  I feel like we should play more zone to help this.  Or even play two bigs on the court at the same time.  Our man to man right now is not working as we are getting killed in the paint and on the boards.  Somethings got to change if we want to make a run this year.

Sorry for the hate bigs, but zero points combined by you four just has me shaking my head.

Idk but now it's gone so I just look like a douche. I guess I'll add my own thoughts: This was a no-win game for us, where we are saying either "they crushed PSU but they're garbage so so what," or "this is a new low." I was really hoping to be discussing the former of the two, but technically it's still a W so at least there's that. Hopefully we mentally regroup and get our mojo back.

Saying it for awhile, I don't know why we haven't played more zone, we cannot keep dribblers in front of us. Can't figure out why we didnt do it against state and shade the side Harris was on. We aren't good defensively, remember when we used to mix things up defensively? Not sure why we don't anymore.

Happy to get the win. I know

Happy to get the win. I know the guys must be suffering a bad hangover from the MSU game, and the Wisconsin heartbreak is still fresh in their minds.

But still, its Infuriating to see Penn State out-rebound us and be able to impose its will on our defense for much of the game. Im sorry, but Penn State sucks. They've lost their best player to injury, and still, their walk-ons have their way with us. I don't like the fact that we have to win games by out-scoring our opponent, and not be able to just fall back on solid defense. Penn State had open lanes and exploited them all game.

I hate being such a negative nancy, and at the end of the day, these are 18-22 year old kids we're talking about. But these are problems that just aren't going away. Quite frankly, they could be getting worse, and could (maybe will?) cost us in March.

Obviously teams have figured out that they have a chance at beating us if they stop the transition. GR3 is mainly scoring off transitions as of today. He doesnt create his own shot so if we cant run, he doesnt score and thats not do to being exhausted.

It's the lack of transition,

It's the lack of transition, which comes from not getting defensive stops.

It's also that we utilized probably too much 2-man ball in those games which too often leave GRIII in the weak side corner since he usually operates on the right side of the court with Burke attacking from the left. It's also that Burke hasn't been as effective beating his man and getting into the lane off the pick and roll, which mean that GRIII's man isn't helping or turning his head, making it harder for GRIII's cuts and slashes to be effective.

Today, in addition to getting out in transition, we ran a lot more motion sets, the first of which led to GRIII setting Morgan up for a point blank look.

But good post.

McGary - Get back in the paint

Our bigs, especially Mitch, spend way too much time out on the perimeter, hoping to trap the oppositions point guard. Sure every once in a while we get a steal out of it, but today, it left the lane wide open.

We made Boronvnjak look like an All-American as he had a career high 17 points on 7 for 9 shooting. Kinda hard to miss layups when absolutely nobody is guarding you down on the low block.

Forget the crap out there and get back in the paint and guard your man!

Well-Fought Win...

..but by all the conventional logic, we shouldn't have had to fight today. Here's a handy chart of our FG and 3FG shooting as well as our opponents in conference play (thumbnail - original chart is big):

Photobucket

You can definitely see the trends pre- and post-Indiana at this point. To be fair, we have played four of the top 30 teams in defensive efficiency in the last two weeks or so, which is definitely part of the reason that our average FG% is about 7% less than before Indiana, but I would also agree with those who said we looked tired and flat today as well, so this week before Illinois could not come at a better time. Rest, regroup, work on the game.

It is also noteworthy that the FG% for our opponents is 7% greater since Indiana, as is opponent 3FG%. Tougher defenses seem to get us out of our offense, and we do struggle on defense allowing 0.935 points per possession, significantly less than some of the teams we just played. I think this moderates as this team builds experience, but it was disconcerting to watch a team with a statistically worse defense dictate the game to us for stretches.

I still think we do great in this next stretch, but we definitely need this break.

Well it could be worse.  We just won a game and some people are about to just give up on this team.  The team had 1, SINGULAR, one game all year where they played a BAD game.  My choice between getting mad or upset about a poor performance is to just remember how awesome this is compared to what not so long ago was the norm for Michigan Basketball.  For those who wish to say thats a losers mentality.  Well, I don't play on the team and if my feelings are somehow effecting how they play, then they should be undefeated.

Defense & Rebounding

Without those 2 things you can be beaten by almost anyone,if you can't see that this team is vulnerable then  you are watching with rose colored glasses.I hope I'm wrong but I see at least 1 more reg season lose, probably 2,a loss in B1G tourney and another in NCAA that adds up roughly to a 26-8 record, pretty good for a young team but not what we've been hoping for.

I was pleased to see us play more zone and extending it to create turnovers & transition baskets. Also we drove more which  got us to the line.

Just got another text. Looks like Rice is going to be on their plane. They're going for 2 weeks to Denard's hometown, Deerfield Beach. And now they're telling me Cazzie Russell just walked by.

Damn. My parents get to have all the fun.

22-4.

Undefeated at home. Ton of young talent. Lot of big games coming up that will define this season. Need a healthy Morgan. Go Blue

GR3

Very happy to see GR3 back to him normal self.

I honestly think he could be the best player on this team. Which is saying a lot I know. But I just don't think we have seen him turn up the heat yet.

It was extremely quiet inside

It was extremely quiet inside Crisler for the most part, but it was also understandable the game was definitely a snoozer.

And what is so hard about finding the right color maize? The past two times they gave out shirts, the shirt was orangeish. But in the sections where the blue shirts were given out, the maize on the shirt was the right color. I don't understand it.

Because alot of t shirt

Because alot of t shirt companies don't make maize t shirts. Hell the ones who make gold still cant get the right consistencies. U can order a box of 30 and all 30 will not look the same. It depends on the material. So unless michigan gets adidas to make the tshirts for them, i doubt the shirts will ever match.

I don't agree that the game

I don't agree that the game was a snoozer.  It was a competitive game for almost the entire way.  Our fans' failure to generate more of a homecourt advantage may have contributed to the closeness of the game.

I talked to a couple of players

before the game. They seemed tired and not very energetic. I know these guys well so this isn't something I am use to seeing. The team in general looks like the are tired. When you watch the offense there is a lot of standing around on the perimeter while Burke figures out the defense. Today the pick and roll was totally absent thus no scoring from the Bigs. On the other side PSU ran the pick and roll effectively a day and seemed to score at will with it.

It seems to me that the offense is a little stagnate. Not much movement and getting the play running too late in the shot clock ending with an off balance shot or bad shot in general. When you watch other teams in the Big 10 I see movement and these teams attack the basket from all directions. Michigan seems like they attack only from the point to many times. Wing players are in their positions but don't move from there once Burke starts his move into the lane. It looks like he is being a little selfish and not getting everyone involved like good point guards do.

Burke had a great game as a shooter and he did complete a couple nice lobs to Robinson for dunks but Hardaway was pretty invisible and the Bigs need more touches. That starts from the point. One last observation that I've noticed the last few games is other good teams pushing the point out way past the three point line. when this happens its difficult to get the offense going. Teams like Indiana, MSU, and Ohio State move the ball around much better and everyone on the floor is getting touches on about every play. I am not talking shots but touches. this creates a defensive nightmare for teams and this creates the defensive breakdown those teams I listed attack. This team as it stands right now seems a little flat footed against the better teams in the Big Ten. This is something I didn't see earlier in the season. I hope it gets corrected. GoBlue.

We nearly lost twice to sparty there

Glad we avoided it, but man we look like a shadow of our early season in most phases of the game. Hoping we can use excessive time of and get through next two to get our second wind. Go blue!

McGary

Some thoughts...

McGary needs to stop trying to jump the passing lanes on D. In the second half Penn St got a couple of easy buckets because McGary went for a steal, failed, and forced a help defender to come up and play the ball handler.

Robinson's game is largely dependent on transition opportunities. He isn't confident or skilled enough yet to do a lot of damage one-on-one.

Hardaway wi be fine. He's a streaky shooter. Sometimes it leads to the 2nd half against Ohio, sometimes it leads to the past two games.

We have not displayed the requisite effort to win the battle on the boards in the past three weeks. Offensive boards have been killing us.

Going zone might be a good idea since a lot of our defensive problems stem from perimeter players getting beat off the dribble freeing up big guys underneath or shooters in the corners.

The week off is coming at the perfect time. Beilein will have ample time to look at film and the guys can get some rest after that gauntlet.

I still think we can run the table until the NCAA tournament and go in with a 30-4 record or maybe 29-5. That should be good for a one seed.
