Michigan takes on Western tonight. The game is on Comcast 900 if you're in the area. Let's go get three points
Michigan - Western Michigan: Open Thread
Congrats to Dan Nichol the new strength coach for WMU football...just saying.
Let's Go Blue!
We have two games @ WMU, currently tied for 1st. State is hosting Penn State for two games this weekend, so they will stay in the CCHA cellar. BG, which is tied with us in 9th place, is @ Miami for two games. NMU in 8th with 20 pts is @ AK for two games. Sure would be nice to gain some points and move up a bit.
Janecyk getting his 4th straight start. Guess we'll just start walk ons forever. As long as it works I'm fine w/ it
Couple good chances early. We've got to get the puck in the net, though.
Nothing would be more beneficial to our noble cause than to get a quick one and shut this crowd up.
Phil diGiuseppe! 1-0 U-M!!!
Wow, I thought Nieves had lost the puck. Great diving play on the assist. Plus we're on the PP.
Guptill PPG!!! 2-0 U-M!!!
We want MOAR GOALS!!!
I blacked out there...are we winning 2-0 in the first? This happens in hockey this year?
So when did we become good again?
Shhhh, it's still early.
Shit, they score. 2-1 now.
Hunwick. Nothing better than actually being confident in your goalie, that's not there right now.
Tiny Jesus saves.
I hope Racine and Rutledge make big improvents for next year.
If you have comcast it's on 901 or 707
We can has another PPG?
But we can give up the tying goal with a minute left. Ohh this hockey team...
Where did the sieve chant start?
...back in late 80s, along with some others, most not suitable for print. Cornell was invited 4th team to GLI at or just after that time. Group of us did those chants at the Joe. One of that group of us went UM law school & continued tradition, always claimed we/he brought all those rude cheers here to Ann Arbor. Never believed him, & still don't, but was an article in the daily a few years back about crackdown on the foul language in some of these chants at Yost & article did trace their arrival to Cornell's appearance in GLI when these "rude fans" brought some of those nasty cheers out here. (I can believe Cornell fans in general, of which we were part, brought some of these chants, but my friend kind of claims personal responsibility.) Goalie - Sieve was definitely the mildest.
I'm in the social work school at WMU, waited outside in line for close to 30 minutes, and it reached capacity before I could get in. Seems like the first had a lot of action.
It's amazing how arrogant that twits from western are with how little they've won and how empty their trophycase is.
People can say whatever they want about us being arrogant but we earned that right by Michigan winning and filling Yost with championship banners.
How are they being arrogant?
Have you ever been to a game where they're there? Or post on uscho?
No, I'm genuinely curious how they're being arrogant. I've heard they are before but am just wondering what some examples are.
It's Friday night....hockey game's on.
Common dude come clean - why the minus 1MM points? What the F did you do?
I made a joke about the illegal immigrants in arizona and the rest of the southwest and it was deemed over the line.
Sorry to hear that dude. Ill-timed and innapropriate jokes seem to the most common way folks around here get slammed. It's why I never, ever repeat jokes - especially the real funny ones.
Anybody watching on Western's feed? Was that a dive?
but has anyone else started to enjoy watching the pistons? I feel like Lawrence Frank is doing a great job making htis team servicable (compared to where they could be).
FUCK! They go ahead 3-2.
Well those first 8 minutes of the first period were fun
Three unanswered goals. /sigh
Need our best period of the season right here. Let's go fellas!
The lunatics are amateurs. First they ban little kids from riding the zamboni at the intermissions because the lunatics were trying to get them to do inappropriate gestures. In the 2nd the PA had to warn them to use appropriate language.
I'm in Chicago right now, and the TV I'm watching on has two different college hockey games (Minnesota on BTN, Yale Cornell on NBC) and a freaking AHL game, but I can't watch either the Michigan Or Red Wings games. Sigh.
OT, but they are talking about Penn State's new program. Has anybody been paying attention to them this year? How are they doing? Are they going to be an okay program in the B1G next year?
Dunno, but PSU is currently tied with MSU at 3.
They're playing pretty damn well for a first-year program in D1. I'm hoping they do well and looking forward to what could be an awesome hockey rivalry.
We should have pulled the fire alarm last period.
Western and UM schedule some non conference games after this year. As a wmu alum i love seeing the hockey program doing good, and developing a rivalry between the two schools is a good thing.
PP us with seconds left.
Edit: Gah, no extra time put on. 3-2, they win.
BG is currently trailing Miami 2-1. If they lose, we keep their company in 9th. (Ugh, it hurts to comtemplate that.)
Ugh, I feel like asking someone to just put a bullet into this season. This team bores me. Call me if they make it to the Joe for the CCHA Tourney.
Call me whatever but this team has no redeeming qualities this season.
Boo. Quick recap: http://centericehockey.us/content/western-michigan-recap
encouraged by their play tonight. Special teams (PK at least, I tuned in and out and missed all our PPs, but we scored a goal on WMU's best-in-conference PK, so I'm assuming that was OK) looked better, as you mentioned PDG and Guptill are starting to get it going again, defense was, at times, decent. I wouldn't say they unconditionally outskated a very good WMU team on their home ice, but that was a winnable game. Michigan didn't walk away with a win from it, but play like that though (what is looking more and more like) 6 games in the play-offs, could yield happiness in the CCHA tournament, with some bounces here and there. But it would be REALLY comforting to reach aat least the 5th spot. I'd much rather play ND/WMU once for all the marbles at the Joe than have to beat them 2-of-3 in their own barns. Miami wouldn't be quite as bad, but still less than ideal. Winning 2-of-3 at FSU, LSSU, OSU or even, though less ideally Alaska, would be much easier, methinks. The season's a mess, but they're starting to look like they have at least the tiniest of chances at salvaging it.
The thing about the last several games was that it's been a lot of players without a lot of goals for the other teams, scoring a lot on Michigan. That and Domenic Monardo. I don't know if that's a lesser defensive pairing, or if it's more on the lower-line forwards, or if the team just tends to lapse more when supposedly less dangerous players are on the ice, but that needs to get tightened up significantly.
EDIT: I always praise Copp and I forgot to, at first. Please consider this as high praise for his night of work and yet another plea for him to be a sophomore C or at least an A. Also, Boo Nieves looked good again tonight, I don't think he's the leadership candidate I think Copp is, but I think Nieves is going to be REALLY good next year. Possibly/probably/hopefully Michigan's first 20-goal scorer since... Caporusso 2008-09?
I admire your optimism, but Janny gave up 2 goals on 5 shots in the 1st. Also on their 2nd goal, their guy had all day to shoot from the blue line. We'll need a ton of puck luck to do anything in the postseason.
2 on 5, but then 1 on 14 in the second isn't so bad and he kept Michigan in it in the third, not allowing anything. Not that Westerb was especially aggressive, but he stopped them all in that period. I mentioned the defensive lapses need to be corrected, but there will always be defensive lapses that need correcting. This isn't the team that had umpteen million ugly losses earlier in the season. A 3-2 loss to Western at Lawson, when they had the chances to do better, is a better sign than losing 5-0 to Cornel or FSU.
Bottom line, we blew a 2-goal lead. allowed 3 unaswered goals.and lost. We need wins, not just better signs.
Blowing a two goal lead is bad. Michigan desperately needs wins. But what they need more are play-off wins and what we're getting are good signs those might be possible. If this was a vintage Michigan team, that played exactly this game, we would be mildly disappointed, but we'd say, "they lost to a top-10 team on the road, they had chances, it happens, we'll beat them tomorrow". This team hasn't earned those defenses. They've played horrendously most of this season. They still have a lot of work to do. If they played like that for the entire play-offs, they probably wouldn't win every game. But they'd have a chance in every game. That's a massive improvement over earlier in the season. More importantly, this is the third game in a row where they've had a pulse. They went 1-2, they needed to go 3-0. But I'd rather believe this team still has a chance, even a small one, than declare the season over. It's abundantly obvious none of the goalies are going to become Hunwick-Ian this season, but if enough of the skaters make a Kampfer-like transformation, they have a shot. I'm optimistic, perhaps overly so, one has every right to be massively disappointed in this team, that's what they've earned. But I think my way is more fun.
I'm not one to declare the season over - or even a game. I remain hopeful at the beginning of games, but when things happen like we come out guns blazing, but still end up tied at the end of the first, then give up that lead, all too often this season holding onto hope seems like trying to catch Wilson.
The current season, or the prospect of the 22 consecutive year tournament appearance record ending.
I think the record. We may not see another team with that legacy of longevity again soon, if ever.
This season continues to be fun. Given, a 3-2 loss to Western isn't really in the top 15 low points of the season as of now, but it sure would be nice to win some games here and there
Fun? What? Bordering on a last-place finish in the final season of the CCHA is "fun?" Possibly seeing the end of the longest streak of consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament – barring a miracle ending to the season – is "fun?" An RPI ranking of 45th out of 59 NCAA teams is "fun?" Having the NCAA’s 54th best team defense is "fun?" Having no player among the NCAA’s top 50 scoring leaders or top 33 goalies is "fun?" It’s not much "fun" when Michigan’s hockey team wins only on . . .
