With the talent we have, we won't need a Trey Burke to force the action...that said, I would like to see Walton be a little more aggressive when he gets the ball a 2nd or 3rd time on a possesion

Today was his first start and I don't even know if he led the team in minutes at PG over Spike in or LeVert in the first half.

He'll become more aggressive as his role increases. As of right now, it's probably best that he keeps the ball moving and we find a good shot.

He's not even a 4th or 5th option on this team right now. He'll probably get there, but right now, he's got to defer.

Very true, but the one thing I'm scared of with this team is that they need to find the person who's going to demand the ball and get a basket when the offense goes cold (as it does for all teams).

We have a few people (GRIII, McGary, Stauskas, maybe Irvin or Walton) who CAN do that, Im not entirely convinced that any of them have that aggressiveness in them to actually do it.

Not a bad half.  One guy getting hot can keep many lesser teams in a game, and we're still up comfortably.  Can't win 'em all by 73.  Plenty to polish up, but we're OK.  A lot of unselfish play, guys trying to make the extra pass.  So the signs are there.

I'm not a basketball defensive expert but it appeared that Coleman's three pointers were all well contested.

Still there is definitely some sloppy passing going on and/or miscommunications that msut be worked out if UM is going to have any success on the road against a good/great team.

true.

but,

if you have such a hot shooter, you have to deny him the ball.  That is a fundamental aspect of defense.  The problem wasn't that he wasn't guarded, but that he was allowed to get the ball because he was extended really far out.  When he's the only scorer, you have to extend all the way with him.

Who will be our leading scorer this season?

I think Stauskas will be the leading scorer this year, not GRIII.  I think we'll see a much more aggressive Nik.  McGary could possibly take that mantle if he's aggressive like last year's tournament run, but instead I think he'll be providing all sorts of stats while Nik will specialize in points.

But Stauskas and McGary shouldn't be too far behind.

I said this last week, this team may break the team record for most number of different players to lead the team in scoring for a game during a season.

We have like 8 guys who could lead the team in scoring on any given night.

Good point.  I expect leading scorers to be

  1. Stauskas
  2. GRIII
  3. McGary
  4. Levert
  5. Walton

I don't think another will reach that status, though Irvin might if he gets really hot and thus extra minutes.  Spike?  Doubt it.  Big men, no.

I just think that the points among the guys that you mentioned could be so spread out that it's not THAT much more than the guys you didn't mention.

If the guys you mentioned all get 10, 12, 14...and then the "other" guys get 6-8. That's not really that many more points.

It's alot different from Burke and Hardaway getting 25, Stauskas getting 15 and everyone else getting 4-6 points.

This team will be exciting to watch this year - maybe even more than last year.  I think we'll see

  • even better ball movement
  • more hot shooters taking over stretches of the game
  • more aggressive defense
  • more running the court

Fun stuff for fans.

Those are the exact reasons I've been excited to see this team since April/May.

That said, we have to realize that we're losing experience, go-to playmakers and a guy to lean on to take the final shot.

It'll be more of a TEAM and more of a "hot hand" type of deal. But sometimes you just need your star player to be a star.

There will be growing pains with this team, but unlike football...I think this team improves as the season goes along.

McGary must stay healthy.

...this Horford-Morgan combo is giving us nothing.

Play one or the other! Can't play them both and rely on any offense that isn't 1 on 1 or fast break.

Still lanky and a little awkward, but he plays so much slower...which is a good thing. You can tell he's got more confidence in his game.

Last year he looked like the freshman that got moved up to varsity in the middle of the season.

Mr. Yost

It's just a bunch of running around with a few dribble handoffs. We had a nice pick and roll to Horford for a dunk, but we haven't run offense all game. Movement, back cuts, off the ball screens, etc.

And even if you're just running a motion offense, there's still flow to it. A pass to the wing generates a back cut, ball screen or screen away. You've got guys working the defense.

We haven't done any of that so far this year.

I'd start Spike every game, but Walton would see more minutes. In the 2nd half I'd ride the hot hand.

We may be playing Morgan and Horford to get GRIII time to acclimate to the 3 position, but when McGary gets back, they should never play together unless we're playing a HUGE lineup.

Our halfcourt offense is a work in progress. In fact, it kind of sucks right now. We didn't need it vs. Concordia because they missed every shot they took. Wayne St is making some shots and we can't get into anything offensively, we're just flat out better than them and we can create 1 on 1.

I have a bad feeling that this team is going to struggle offensively quite a bit this season. Without Burke/Hardaway, those close wins we had last year are going to turn into losses this year. We have no catalyst on offense.

lol what? not good without him? Remember when we should have lost to penn state on the road last year? or got blown out at msu? teams have bad games in basketball, its why undefeated teams pretty much never happen.
