Michigan vs THE University(ofwestern)Illinois tonight 8:30PM Crisler Arena
Tonight Michigan basketball will tip off against Western Illinois at 8:30 in Crisler Arena. The leathernecks not only feature an adorable bulldog in their logo, but also an anchor AND a golden eagle. Bad-ass.
The leathernecks are led by 6-3 senior guard Tommie (dontcallmesteven) Tyler. He played nearly the entire game against Dayton, and chipped in with 15 points(4-10 shooting, 7-8 free throws). 6-7 junior forward Jack Houpt and 6' freshman gaurd Remy (doitforyourpeople) Roberts also played significant minutes against Dayton, but were somewhat less effective.
6-3 Freshman Forward Obi (the bat) Emegano was VERY effective in his 25 minutes, scoring on all 4 of his field goal attempts and converting 7-8 free throws. The leatherback's starting lineup is rounded out by 6-7 freshman center rebounding phenom Terrell (owenscherokee) Parks(8 boards against Dayton). Their major bench contributors are 6-10 sophomore center David (dontcallmegerbil) Gerbu, and 6-2 guard Billy (the great) Molinari. Yes, that's three freshmen in the starting lineup. Three summit league freshmen. That might have something to do with them getting blown out 87-58 by Dayton. They're not very good at basketball.

Cough...Western Illinois...cough

Uh, WESTERN Illinois. You may want to fix the title.
November 17th, 2011 at 10:05 AM ^
Does everyone automatically get a nickname when they sign with Western Illinois?
November 17th, 2011 at 10:11 AM ^
How else are you going to recruit to Western Illinois?
November 17th, 2011 at 10:12 AM ^
When you're Westerin Illinois, you need all the recruiting tools you can get.
November 17th, 2011 at 10:14 AM ^
I like how Illinois seems to be the only state that has a Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western, and yet all of them are in different conferences.

Any tv coverage for this one?
November 17th, 2011 at 10:24 AM ^
ESPN3 again. Get your Xbox out.

Have they said whether the game will be on 950 or 1050AM locally? Doesn't say on Dylan's site or mgoblue.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:06 AM ^
The game notes have radio coverage as 950 AM and 102.9 FM (plus Sirius 94).

Might as well be available in Siberia. Tough channel to find. Why is this not on the BTN tonight?
November 17th, 2011 at 11:27 AM ^
Sarcasm? It's ESPN's internet stream site...
November 17th, 2011 at 1:29 PM ^
I hear they have ESPN 'the Ocho' in Siberia
November 17th, 2011 at 11:24 AM ^
WTF? I thought this is why we have the Big Ten network so we could see all the games. So why make it an 8:30 start? I'll be there with bells and whistles on either way but it is frustrating when there is a lot of interest in these guys.
November 17th, 2011 at 11:29 AM ^
The game is part of the Maui Invitational which has a contract with ESPN. It's not like our first two games were on TV. I'd rather it be on ESPN3 than on BTN online.
November 17th, 2011 at 12:07 PM ^
Then why aren't they playing the game in Maui?
November 17th, 2011 at 12:32 PM ^
Tonight's game is NOT part of the Maui Invitational. The game on Monday against Towson was--it was one of the Maui on the Mainland games. This year they "expanded" the tournament by having the seven teams headed to Maui play "opening round" games on their home courts against four "mainland" teams: Belmont, Middle Tennessee, Towson, and UNC-Greensboro.
Also, the reason tonight's game is at 8:30 is because--just like the game on Monday--it's part of a women's/men's doubleheader. The women's team hosts Utah at 6:00 tonight at Crisler.

They're the Leathernecks. Which is apparently a bulldog named Rocky.
November 17th, 2011 at 12:05 PM ^
Leathernecks. An old term for a Marine, hence the EGA in the logo and the bulldog mascot. Wonder if they got permission for that.
November 17th, 2011 at 12:23 PM ^
was just teasing the OP...personally never heard of a leatherback but I'm sure there must be one somewhere...maybe a sofa
November 17th, 2011 at 1:20 PM ^
A leatherback is a sea turtle species.
Here's an explanation of the origin of Western Illinois's nickname (source):
Western Illinois University holds the distinction of being the only non-military institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps' official nickname, "The Fighting Leathernecks," in 1927 when then-athletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray "Rock" Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine's official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname.

I just fired my proofreader. Kind of Freudian I suppose...Like a soft comfortable resting place before their 7000 hour flight to Maui.
