Michigan vs. Tennessee in the Gator Bowl?

Submitted by dmcb32 on

Per thewolverine.com says that UM will be headed to the Gator Bowl to face off with the Tennessee Vols (6-6, 3-5).  This is a good matchup!

Actually, if Auburn gets knocked out of the title game, that means South Carolina beat them in the SEC Championship, meaning they get the automatic bowl bid. Though they'd probably get selected for an at large, the "no more than two" rule that is shafting MSU comes into play again.

Either way, there is no chance that only one SEC team gets into the BCS bowls.

Uh, yeah.  That's why Auburn would go to the Orange.  First pick after the Sugar, which would already have South Carolina.  Unless the Rose weirdly decides to take Auburn over Stanford.

This is a good matchup to get RR started on his journey to take us to a postive bowl record (thanks Lloyd).

all of the people who wanty to play a bad team in the bowl game. Nothing good can come from playing Tennessee. If we win we beat a terrible team, if we lose..OMGZ RR lost to to a 6-6 team.

Because I really wonder of Tennessee fans will travel for this game.  Michigan fans will moderately travel.  Florida would have sold the game out.  Weird.

Where is Florida going?

This is a great matchup.  In fact I would love to get revenge for what they did to us in the last bowl game we played them.  Of course I live in TN so I got a lot of heat the last time we played them so of course this would be great for me.  On a better note atleast the gator bowl is a new years day bowl.

Well being a UT fan as well... This would be the only team I wouldnt be mad that Michigan lost to. But like in 03 I would hate having to see both my teams on the field playing each other. Please dont let this be true.... And dont think that UT is as bad as they were. Matt Sims ruined our season... Tyler Bray saved what he could and got us bowl eligible... This kid is amazing and im glad he didnt leave when kiffin left. This game would be a shootout at worst

Good matchup for us. Atrocious matchup for anyone without an obvious rooting interest.

I am also hearing Penn State and Florida could play in the Outback. 7-5 vs. 7-5? 7-5 vs. 6-6? What happened to the prestige of a New Year's Day bowl? This is not the kind of football you expect to see on January 1.

Would the Gator Bowl really take a 7-5 team and a 6-6 team?  The standards for that bowl game must have really dropped.  20 years ago, we took Desmond & Company to that bowl where we crushed Ole Miss.  And that Michigan team was 6 points shy of playing for a national championship.  Now with 5 really bad losses, they're going to take us again?

Trying to go 3-0 against Florida would be nice but I'll gladly take a game against the Vols even though they're awful.  That 2002 Citrus Bowl was a disgrace.  I couldn't believe that was the year we drew them.  Our team that year got worse and worse as the season went on.  I think we would have easily beat the Vols in 99, 00, 02 and 03.  In 03, I watched them get destroyed by the "mighty" Maryland Terps in their bowl game and I remember crying out, "Why couldn't we have faced THIS Vol team?"

There's plenty to hate about Tennessee for motivation.  Their reaction to the 97 Heisman winner (Yes, it was Woodson's fault that Manning threw all those interceptions against Florida) Fat Fullmer voting us #4 in the final polls that year, their bitching and moaning about the Big House becoming the biggest stadium again over Neyland?  Bring them on!

The selection process has changed considerably. Teams are necessarily slotted by their position in the standings, they are "picked" based on how well their fanbase travels and how many people will watch the game on television.

So, essentially in the Big 10...

The Capital One bowl gets the first pick of any non-BCS team (but has to take Michigan State since no team came within 1 game of them in the conference) and then the Outback picks and then it's the Insight/Gator (rotating). The Outback could take any one of Iowa, Penn State, Illinois, Michigan, and Northwestern as can the Gator Bowl.

Since we have a devoted fanbase that travels well, BOOM!, hello Gator Bowl.

all the rage in the 90's, the Gator got the short end of the stick.  Big East vs ACC matchups with ND a possibility when the BCS/bowl alliance formed.  It was this way for a few years, recently they were able to break away due to ND's utter incompetence.

New year's day bowl has the connotation of being a good bowl, not a bowl where two middling teams (sorry, one middling team and one team that is OMGSECAWESOME conference depth).  I was very happy that Michigan made it to a bowl back when they qualified, but given a bowl I'd rather not play Tennessee.

What happened to the rule that 7-5 teams must be picked over 6-6 teams anyway?

Just think if someone at the beginning of the season told you that we would be going to the gator bowl, but there was a relatively good chance that RR could get fired.  I guarantee know would believe it.

It should be pretty easy to get tickets.  I've heard (from a buddy who hails from Miami) for these Florida bowl games if there's no Florida team in the game, go down and scalp.  Plenty of tix for cheap $.
