is the key word here. Teams should progress not regress when they have had more time in your system.
Michigan vs. Purdue open thread
Actually, not so true. The 2004 team that won the NIT was definitely better than last year's team, they just weren't eligible for the ncaa tourney because of ncaa sanctions.
Also, last year's success was just as much thanks to Amaker as it was to Belein considering Amaker is the one who brought Deshawn and Manny in.
Plz go better than this. kthnxbye
Sims looks gassed (not surprising given his role in the game). I wonder if the change in S&C coaches has been more of a negative than we thought.
Anthony Wright:Our best option at big forward::Mary Kate Olson:Our best option at nose tackle
Anywhere,, struggle up the court each time. Hopefully we can learn from this with the Manny suspension included.
It became apparent fairly early on in the season that Michigan did not have enough athletic players to compete with upper echelon teams. This game minus Manny, Michigan looks terrible. Let this be a lesson to all those who claim that Coach B's system would work better w/o Manny. It doesn't. You need to have guys who can create shots for themselves. Or draw attention and create for others.
Talent wins. Well coached talent wins championships. Well coached medicore talent has its moments, but will never win championships. Talent is coming and will continue to come, I am confident.
but, what talent is coming?
Smotrycz, Hardaway, Brundidge, and possibly Zeigler and Horford. And don't worry, you don't have to say what you said, everyone already knows you're an ass.
Besides Michigan who else wanted them? My point is we didn't have to beat anyone for these guys. Just look at what he has brought in, and then call yourself an ass because you know don't know much about the guys coming in.
Enlighten me about Smotryz, Brundidge, and Hardaway
Hardaway was also offered by Minn. That's it. For all the praise Smotryz gets his only offers are Northwestern and Oregon State. Michigan was Brundidge's only offer. Don't get me wrong. I hope that these guys really pan out, but as of right now, I'm not impressed.
You told me nothing that I couldn't just go onto a recruiting website to find out. If you are going to do that, you might think that the fact that Smotrycz and Morris being rated in the top 100 players in the nation on those very same sites might mean something. Also, Brundidge didn't have any offers because he is only a junior. MSU was recruiting him heavily and didn't offer him because he committed to UM so early. I guess that means he sucks, right? I mean, he didn't have a single other offer so he blows.
I wasn't even including Morris or Vogrich. Tell me how Beilein is not pulling in some talented players? Is offers the only thing you base your assessment of Beilein's recruiting off? By the way, I assume you know quite a bit about all of our incoming recruits because you have watched them numerous times, right?
i'm not trying to be an ass...i'm legitimately curious what talent you think is coming that will catapult this team into - at minimum - conference contenders?
also, i don't want to put words in your mouth, but from reading your post, one of the takeaways i had was that the talent is simply not here yet. while we definitely have gaps at certain positions, we do have two future NBA players on the team. moreover, UM only lost two walk-ons from its tourney team last year...they were talented enough to get to the tourney last year, how are they not improving this year?
why the neg??? i wasn't inciting any arguments...i was asking a question and making a valid, factual point.
some people do on here. You ask a legit question and they get offended. My point is Beilein hasn't brought real talent in. Stu can shoot, but that's about it. Novak plays hard and I love his game, but that's about it. You will never see D. Morris real game because his system won't let him get out in the open floor and get loose. Morris has street in his game but you'll never see it.
You realize that he has had 2 full classes after taking over a team that not only has less scholarships to give because of sanctions but hadn't made the tournament in 10 years? You think the top players in the country just want to come here because they like Chrysler? The fact that Beilein has already pulled in 3 top 150 players with a top 25 guy seriously considering coming here is reason enough to think talented players are starting to notice something going on in Ann Arbor. But please, go on with your John Beilein hating. It is fun to see you reply and get negged into the ground.
Negs really hurt my feelings, please stop. But the facts are facts and his record is speaking for it's self. Look across the country and look at all the freshman doing big things. What have his freshman done? Basketball is not like football. Two classes are enough to show some progressive improvement.
Did you not read the part where I said Beilein was taking over a team that hadn't been to the tournament in 10 years? Also, Deshawn Simms averaged under 4 points per game his freshman year. I guess all freshman should be able to come right in and score over 15...I mean Manny did it, why can't Morris or Stu or Novak?
Morris is a freshman, Douglass and Novak are not.
that your just a kid who doesn't know much about the game of Bball. Most players make the big jump between fresh and soph year, like Sims did. And yes I have seen Brundidge and Hardaway play. Brundidge has some street in his game and I like him as High School player. Hardaway, not so much. Watched him in a AAU tourney I had a couple of my old kids playing in. Typical Beilein recruit, can shoot the rock put can't put it on the floor and create.
Sorry, I have been around basketball my whole life. My dad is a coach. I do agree with you though, players tend to make a jump from their freshman to their sophomore years. Do you know how many recruits have had that opportunity under JB here at UM? Two. Total. Stu and Novak. Earlier you said UM wouldn't be good while JB is here and went on to say that he hasn't brought any good recruits in. I guess those 2 guys only marginally getting better while playing out of position is enough to doom the program and say that JB can't coach or recruit. Who is the one who doesn't know basketball? And having "street" in your game (as you have mentioned twice already) means absolutely nothing. You sound ridiculous.
Without him it's just tough sledding.
Like him or not, you have to hand it to Beilein—he's the anti-Dantonio... it's not win-at-all-costs for JB.
This was one of the three games (@MSU, @Kansas) you had to figure they had no chance to win at the beginning of the year anyway, so in the grand scheme of things, very little is lost here, especially if it ends up being a galvanizing force for Manny and the team.
Any offense needs what you noted. I don't know if the offense they run is predicated on the cutter making reads off the screen, but it looks as if they are always coming off the down screen and simply coming to a spot 25 ft from the basket.
It seemed WVU ran curls and back cuts off the down screen when B was there. They have good spacing, but they don't really utilize it; as you noted, much of it has to do with the lack of talent.
Does and will work when he has the right type of players, however, at this point I don't see those players on our bench at this time. Hopefully he can continue to recruit his system guys along with catching a couple players like "Trey Ziegler".
waste of a season in my opinion
I've seen worse.
You just bought your ticket to the great amazing NIT tournament...Welcome thanks for playing like shit during the season!
No matter how many points we score....We have a total of 5 rebounds in the first half!!! You have to make stops and get defensive rebounds.
and this is how
ZERO respect for anyone on michigan right now... they know that they can let deshawn score 30+ and they will still win by at least 15... i was happy to see the refs finally call some hand checking fouls on purdue when michigan was bringing the ball up the floor...
Epic PSU game-style comeback?
If this transpires = 17-22 from 3 pt land in 2nd half...and they happen to reach double digits in boards.
Good optimism, though!
If one player means that much to this team, we have a long way to go. Obviously no one else is stepping up today. I'd feel much better if we at least executed the basics and secured the ball ...that would at signify some level of improvement. Not seeing it. Always next year.
V-neck sweater day on espn?
I know Knight always wear a sweater, but Musberger always seems to sport a coat and tie.
This is hard to watch
Not a bad game over on CBS. 48-43 UT w/ 15+ min left in 2nd half
Not over yet...
might have given a hint as to the suspension. he said beilein and the team had not decided if harris would be back. this implies he may have picked a fight on a foul in practice or the like. mouthing off to coach is one thing but the idea he would have to be accepted by the team too is something else.
Yeah. This game is disgusting.
I'd rather be watching Glen "Big Dog" Robinson highlights then this.
Hopefully a 30 point blow out sends a message to Manny.
I have never seen this many traveling calls in a college game before.
Mr. Hightower wanted his crew to be focused on the traveling today and made a goal for his crew to get at least 12 calls in order to meet the NCAA regulated quota for the weekend.
"We are letting far too many young men down by allowing them to do whatever they want with that pivot foot. The pivot foot has been undervalued and I for one, intend to put a stop to it", said Hightower before the game.
+13 for the first half, right? right? shit.
