Tennessee is not recruiting well just because they got 18 dudes
Stauskas finally got one.
I saw no more.
NASTIEST DUNK IN CANADIAN HISTORY
We already love him.
pooped my pants
what is this foul on ISU thing that was called? did the ref make a mistake?
Nik Stauskas....I just shit myself.
Horford needs to play D instread of standing there
Damn. I have no idea how that went it.
Dammit with all of these fouls. You have to be kidding me
Might be a good idea to you know, keep someone glued to him
Must resist all caps bitching about the refs.
Albrecht didn't get fouled..but that ISU player sure did.
Are these BIG12 refs?
are they high school refs?
This officiating is fucking amazing. I'm amazed.
We're GIVING UP TOO MUCH SIZE ON DEFENSE!!!
Jeez! Am I the only one watching us get pushed all over the fucking court?!
You have an All-American and TWO servicable big men. USE THEM.
That ejim guy came to play. Without him they would be screwed
I'm not one to critique the refs but my god this is as one sided as it gets.
Holy fucking home cooking from the refs....did not even touch him...
Serious question, not complaining. Who was that foul on?
Not even touched on that shot
Lol, the foul was on ISU. Resume bitching?
The fact that everyone thought it was on Michigan, including the announcers, says a lot about how the fouls are being called this game.
do we know how to guard the pick and roll? apathy on the jump outs
Levert: still too skinny
what does that have to do with anything...it was a three point shot? He didn't jump out, even though he could have?
And it's not even really his fault. He's just too small for one position and too slow for another
Iowa State was the best at shooting the 3 last year, yet we go under the screens.
If nothing else this game should prepare the team for East Lansing.
The environment will be similar but MSU is a way better team than ISU.
Please .gif that ISU belly kid!
I wouldn't go big here... We're defending fine for the most part - what we don't want is to give up quickness on the perimeter and let them start heating up from behind the arc. If we lock down we can get a few runouts. That's were the focus has to be. Rebound and run. Having two-bigs hurts us in transition.
Well, we're going to have to win under worse conditions and higher stakes later in the season... BUT HIT YOUR FREE THROWS!
Well looks like we're going to have our first to-the-wire test without Trey. Looking forward to see how we respond.
feed my ass
Duke is going to crush us by 20+ points.
Have you watched duke?
Seriously, leave. Doom and gloom 3 games in, get out with that shit.
It's just too big for him.
God forbid he get some good road intense crowd game experience early in the season.
Walton is close, but not quite there
Ugh... so many freshman mistakes from Walton. To be expected, though.
overrated chant? with plenty of game to go....idiots....awaken the Kracken
Nevermind, apparently it was overrated
Iowa State calling ANYONE "overrated" is like a homeless guy calling somebody else a bum.
Michigan does not have a go to player and that is going to kill them all year.
I picture you as the guy in complete freak out mode telling everyone else to chill out.
Because I posted displeasure about the officiating in this thread, doesn't mean I am freaking out about this team prospects three games into the season though.
The "Overrated" chant might be the dumbest thing in sports.
You're winning a game with five minutes left against a top ten team, and you're saying they're overrated?
"We're beating you, so you can't be that good!"
Agree. I've never understood it. Don't you want to justify your victory if you beat a high ranked opponent? A better chant would be "We're underrated!"
The most disappointing thing is letting the yahoo fans get all excited over their band of crappy transfers and jucos.
Lavert is not a go to scorer.
He seems to think he is
Non-existant help D from Irvin.
About time on that call, but Mitch has to hit these FT's
On second thought, Im not so sure its not 'f*ck mcgary'. Am I crazy?
They aren't saying Overated
They are saying Fuck McGary.
Nice kids. Typical Nike school.
Its times like these where you really miss a guy like Trey Burke.
Chanting "overrated" when you're up by 2 is ridiculous.
That is all.
These ISU fans are classless pieces of shit
Great defense by Stausas...watched him chase that kid all over the floor.
FT shooting is the difference in the game right now. Please tell me this won't be a yearlong problem like last year.
We'll have to excuse ISU's behavior. They're not used to being in the spotlight.
Lot's of time, we have the ball and the arrow with 4 to go.
It'd be nice to get McGary the ball on the block and work a little inside out. That are ball screen with Caris. That last take he made the correct decision got deep into the lane, just missed that shot. I'll take that possession all day.
99% sure they are chanting "Fuck McGary" not "Overrated"
I thought it was overrated but then read their lips and I agree
Friends at the game have confirmed that it is indeed Fuck McGary.
And that was a weak ass call on him there.
Wow... Didn't realize Iowa state fans were so douchey
I'm still going big on defense.
Also, Spike plays the rest of the way IMO.
...then when it's an offensive possession I'll put in LeVert for Horford.
Hard to beat the refs..
I'm excited to see how we do in this situation.
I don't know how well we're running it in practice right now, but it would be interesting if JB pulled out a 1-3-1 after this possession to try to get a turnover.
whitest school ever
I don't know if I've seen a non-white person yet.
Levert needs to be benched now
GRIII looks a step slow
Gonna be a long season if we play like this.
ISU is a good team and these refs.....
We'll be alright.
Gonna be an even longer season if we're blaming refs against ISU.
Officiating hasn't been good, but neither has our play. Let's at least wait until Big Ten play to start blaming refs..
It's going to be a long season because the season is long and it's really early in that long season. Y'all need to relax a bit.
Tough road environment, fringe top 25 team, not getting great reffing. Lots of top 10 teams lose in those environments. We are going to be fine.
They called that fould on McGary before contact was even made.
might as well make that Foul count
Need to calmn down and run the offense and turn up intensity on defense
THAT IS HOW YOU FOUL!
My GOD how can you get so out of position?
I get the feeling that this is the biggest thing that has happened to Ames, Iowa in a decade.
Game of runs, we got this one.
Ugh... what a shitty foul. But at least he's making the guy earn the points.
McGary was waaay late to help.
But good response thus far.
Only Nik gets those.
Do not need to force shots
ESPN.com is faster than TV if anyone wants to ruin the excitement
Vitale rewrites Michigan basketball history
He's worthless right now. Get him out.
Thought Robinson got fouled on that last 3 attempt
can't defend the post, can't rebound in the 2nd half, missing 3s
It's Ace's fault for picking against KenPom.
Levert is not good at defense. GR III is an athlete playing basketball, not a basketball player. That said, Stauskus is unreal and McGary is a beast.
Levert getting picked on here down the stretch.
the refs=Hilton Magic
Refs kept ISU in this game and lack of help d allowed them to win it
Man, LeVert needs to hit the weight room.
Good news is GRIII is no where close to NBA ready...
I feel like whenever Dickie V announce are games we lose.
too small to cover their forwards
I know he had a couple of great games, but he still hasn't quite put it all together...and that's fine. But he's not a starter yet.
Awful game all around.
FEED THE HOT HAND!
You learn that in 6th grade.
Because he's not open? They're going to stick to Stauskas like glue, someone else has to make a shot.
So you're saying it's not easy to get a shot off when the other team is clearly keying in on you defensively?!
tough road game. we're good long term.
Its not like we're losing to Concordia at home. Everyone's gotta chill out. Remember when we still lost 8 games last year? We're going to lose games. This is not a bad one to lose
Would be nice if somebody besides Stauskas could step up and hit a bucket.
Well last year our first non-conference loss was in April...
a Trey Burke. Someone to take last minute shots
Stauskus? I hope.
we can still do this you quitters
It's games like this where we get to figure out who the clutch guys are that can make it happen when it counts. Stauskus seems like the only one right now. We need another clutch scorer--not sure it's going to be Lavert or GRIII. Might need to start working it into McGary in late game situations.
But I don't think Cris LeVert is awesome like everyone else on this blog seems to think. He's still too small for his position, which is kinda the norm for Coach B I guess. He's good passer for his size, but he's not a great shooter or scorer. I'm just confused by the praise hept upon him around here.
wait a few games. Either he had an off night or he was padding his stat sheet against cupcakes.
Glenn Robinson will be abused by Jabari Parker and Aaron Gordon.
He misses and we hit a 3 and we're in it Believe!
Levert is not clutch. At least not yet.
We just gotta chill out. Iowa State is a top 25-ish team and we're playing on the road in front of a loud crowd. Don't forget out team is still mostly freshman and sophmores. We are going to be ok everyone. Repeat after me: We're going to be ok. It'll all be ok
Everyone who says stuff like this is trying to calm themselves down more than anything. No one is saying the season is over, people are just disappointed with our play tonight. I think that's acceptable. This has not been a good basketball game for Michigan.
Agreed. Don't let the football anger bleed into this. We are super young.
This is just a stupid comment. Age or year in school does not matter very much in college basketball. I hope you made yourself feel better.
This loss isnt a big deal, but that excuse is just awful.
Weak side defense has been awful in this game. If Levert is going to check larger players, they have to improve in that.
Neutral court we wipe the floor with ISU. It's all good. Coach B is going to have this team peaking in March
I highly doubt it. This Michigan team is soft with the exception of McGary. Also, by the end of the year a loss to ISU isn't going to look very bad at all.
Come on guys!
Guess I can't blame ISU fans for being rowdy. This is undoubtedly the biggest thing to happen in Ames, Iowa since the inception of corn.
Can't hit shit..
If we could make a shot, it would help matters immensely.
Refs totally fucked this whole game up. Then trashy ISU fans chant fuck mcgary. What a goddamn joke. I hope we get these fuckers in the tourney on a neutral court.
It's a respectable opponent at their place (Iowa St. probably shoulda beat OSU in the NCAAs last year and beat Kansas) - yeah, losing sucks but this loss will pay dividends in teaching our young team how to play together in March.
Robinson will come around. I hope.
1. No Leadership
2. No Identity
3. No "go-to guy" scoring option
Who misses Burke now?
Relax. This was a predictable loss. A win would have been more surprising.
All of us? I don't think any of us wanted Trey to leave.
A 2 does us no good...need a 3 and foul and another 3.
Refs really handing this game to them...
If we are 7-9 (77.8%) we are one possession away. This team needs to become better at FT shooting
We are getting open looks, Dicky V.
This is a tuff game and Robinson and LeVert have been putrid...and we were in it untill the end....good things will come out of this game....
Ejim was the best player on the court tonight. GRIII and Levert were non-factors. With the exception of Stauskas, this was a really disappointing game. A lot of mistakes on offense and defense, and they really missed having Burke as a leader at the end of the game. The last few minutes were a mess.
It's early with some important changes in the makeup of the team guys. This game will hardly have any impact on our season. Just gotta work on the team D and get Robinson to stop forcing shots. He's gone from one extreme to the other and I'm starting to think he's just not that good at creating his own shot, as much a everyone wants him to.
None of these guys have had to carry the load in a crunch time situation like this before. No Trey or Timmy to take these big shots. Someone needs to emerge. I think it may end up being Stauskus and Walton later in the season.
Shitty game. They couldn't miss, and we couldn't throw it in the ocean. Miserable game to watch. That said, we'll have a good season if we can stay healthy.
GRIII just never got into the flow of the game. Everything from him was rushed.
Or found a way to blame the game on Borges.
Not quite...but close.
People need to relax. Winning is more fun, but November basketball is meaningless.
So you seriously just compared Beielin with Borges. I hope you are drunk.
Because your reading comprehension sucks.
The freak outs aren't that different. And wait...before this season is done some moron is going to go off on the job Beilein is doing.
Do you think they will storm the court?
And if we step back, its nice to be in this position. Just 3 or 4 years ago we were rushing the court for beating #4 Duke, now people rush the court for beating us. We're a team to get excited about beating now which is pretty cool. Hail to Beilein as usual
Thanks for saying this, it actually makes me feel better!!
Team looked lost out there without Burke or Hardaway to take big shots at the end.
Its hard to win when you cant make any baskets
We didn't finish the game. The refs are shitty and fucked us over in the national championship game too but they're not the reason we lost.
in the last minute.
Young team in a hostile environment for the first time this season, not worried about this team long-term. I think they will still be a clear cut top ten caliber team by the end of the season.
NCAA tournament is about where you are at the end of the year.
He definitely does not play soft. He was a beast on the glass, especially on the o-boards. And he fouled out. Not saying its 100% true, but generally fouling out != soft.
Refs + cold shooting = losing to good team.
In a "real" game Irvin wouldn't have seen the floor and Walton would not have seen as much time, especially in the first half. I'd love to see them in the tourney. Just love it.
Michigan went 0-7 after that give and go with Nik and GR3
GRIII - if he is what the NBA is looking for, no wonder no one watches that league anymore.
I know it's illegal to criticize a student athlete, but can someone tell me what GR3 does well, other than dunk?
Rebound, run the floor, defend the perimeter.
They went into panic mode and just started bombing threes. Unacceptable composure from this team.
Yeah, they forgot to enter the "aging chamber" before the game and get older and wiser.
One freshman got significant minutes tonight, with seven players from last years team. The youth argument doesn't work here.
Yeah..and neither do you!
First road game for a somewhat young team, it happens. They will most likely get better in those situations as the season goes along, and be where people think they should be by the end of the season.
I didn't think anyone brought out UNACCEPTABLE around here anymore....
this game has been over...yet the ending is still taking for-ever
Muh high vertical. Robinson is a mediocre shooter with a less than mediocre handle. He's going to have a bad year now that Burke isn't spoonfeeding him.
Not an and one there? Ok.
Not sure what kind of year he is going to have but he might reach Al Borges level on this board by Mid-Jan.
but then I realized the season is soooooo long and Al Borges doesn't call plays for our b ball team so I'm not to upset
OVER-RATED! *rushes the court anyways because they beat an overrated team*
HALOL! Rushing the court after that game. I guess it's all they have.
Well thats cute. At least we are to the point where a team that won some tourney games beating us is a big enough deal to storm the court.
Iowa state got that natty title!
At this time last year the team wouldn't have ever been in it unless Burke had one of those nights.
"overrated" chant, and rushing the court? Not sure Iowa State fans are aware that there team is, in fact, good.
They are good and I'll be pulling for them to get all the wins, but I can't imagine the Cyclones beating a team as talented as us on the road or on a neutral court.
I would be kinda pissed if I was on the ISU team. It's not like these guys are UNLV and are not good
The rare non-consecutive double post.
I live in Iowa. That is how Iowa State fans roll. They must not have known the guys in Vegas had them favored either. I may work from home tomorrow. Dealing with them in my office will be insufferable.
They weren't chanting overrated...
much tougher to shoot on an away court; especially first road game. different background, crowd, etc. the game all boiled down to not shooting. they got open looks for the most part but went about 8-30 from 3 and poor FTs.
i actually don't mind having a good kick in the pants early in the season to reduce the players' overconfidence and allow beilein to push harder.
definitely outmuscled on the boards though. mcgary often the only guy near the hoop; especially on offense.
Lost on the road to a good team. We're still immensely talented and young, McGary is still getting back to 100% and we have one of the best coaches in the business. We're fine
Great learning experience for our young team. Can only help us in the future. Chill everyone. ..even Duke lost today...on their own home court!
lol.. no? They didn't?
Lousy game, but it'd be a bad idea to consider throwing in the towel on the season. Tough environment against a solid and well coached team with a significant dose of home-cooked officiating. Cold shooting on top of that. McGary really playing for the first time in months. Let it be a learning experience. We were never going to win all of our road games. This was a difficult one.
We got little from Robinson tonight, nothing from LeVert. Time for a couple guys to step up. We can play better, and we will.
I don't see significant improvement from last year. Missed a bunch of open jumpers, made some bad turnovers, got bullied in the post.
I at least liked that LeVert was aggressive. Shots weren't falling (particularly in the second half), but he'll bounce back. I'm worried about GRIII though.
Agreed on GRIII. Terribly overrated.
It's that the refs don't seem to fear or even respect him. We didn't get any calls in the championship game (and went against the ultimate referee intimdator in Pitino) and didn't get calls today.
You think Izzo's team would have been shafted the same way? Pitino? Bob Knight? I love that Beilein is not like those coaches and is a true class act. But sometimes it can hurt us
Away game against a tough ISU team in an even tougher road environment.
This was a good test for a young team, but it will pay dividends for the B1G season, and we'll be better for tournament time.
Maybe now Beilein can stop forcing his offenses to flow through 3 pointers now? I love Beilein and love what he's done with the program. But through his good times and his bad times here, I've always been frustrated with his obsession with and dependence on the 3. Just give it up man. If we can hit it, great. If not, change the plan up and quit calling plays around shooting behind the arc.
You think he is forcing his offense to jack up 30 threes? This isn't like football where everything is called from the sideline.
The 3 is part of the offense but Beilein would prefer most of the shots to be around the basket. The players have to recognize what is a good 3 and what isn't. That's a process.
Have ever you played organized basketball before? Basketball where plays are actually practiced and ran?
Think of it as a zone run based football offense. The play is designed for the run to go a certain way. If the hole happens to be elsewhere, the RB has got to take that, but that doesn't take away from the fact the plan was to initially go elsewhere. You have primary objectives with plays run in basketball, if that isn't there or if you think something better is available, you improvise from there. After all this time, if you can't tell that Beilein's main objective in a lot of plays he designs is clearly to get a shot behind the arc, well then I don't know what to tell ya.
Thanks for the "lesson," but you have no idea about Beilein's philosophy if you think his goal for this offense is to jack up 30 threes a game.
(And yes, I did play basketball, for a long time. But we didn't run the Beilein offense and I bet your teams never did either - if you even played.)
Yeah, I did play and we ran the Northwestern offense (a variation of the Princeton, which I believe is what Beilein's offense is based off of).
But yes, I most certainly hope Beilein doesn't want his team chucking up 30 3s a game either, but it sure seems to happen a lot over the many years he's been here. Also, we rountinely have ranked near the top in attempted 3s in the country since Beilein got here. He clearly emphasizes shooting the 3 very heavily, way more than most places. I'd just rather we didn't rely on it so much. That probably won't change and we'll probably continue to have success with the way it is, but man is it frustrating to watch sometimes.
so who are all of these great scorers in the post you want to go to???
Pick n'roll, driving, mid range jumpers, etc... There's plenty of other ways to score other than the extremes of chucking up a 3 every possession or dumping it down to a dominant big man.
ISU is a quality team with a very good coach who just played the biggest home game in history. They will make the tourney and probably get a 5-6 seed.
This team is young and missing Burke- no one is filling that hole right now, espeically the freshmen. Levert is being leaned on a ton offensively right now. I think he's still a pleasent surprise, but we have stauskas as the #1 offensive guy and levert as #2- that's not good.
Let's hope Irvin and Walton can develope and GRIII can start playing like an NBA 1st round pick. until then, we'll have trouble scoring, especially late in the game.
let's not get carried away now. they play teams like kansas and texas every year. they probably played iowa in the olsen/raveling days too. there are probably many others too that rate higher.
Does anyone think we lose this game with a fully healthy McGary who had been practicing and playing the whole season? No way. It's only going to get better and better.
Idk why but this is the least upset I've been over a Michigan loss in a while. This game just didn't feel that important other than providing the team experience playing in a hostile environment. This team was/is gonna be a really good team despite today's outcome.
I love College Football because every single game counts.
But I'll admit, sometimes it's nice when you have games that don't really matter that much :) Like now.
