We win this game and the tournament chances increase greatly. Gonna be a tough one but I expect a good battle. Go Blue
Michigan vs. Illinois Open Thread
Hold on, hold on
edit: how do i embed w/o a source box?
Anyone have a link to a stream of the game?
If I could..
That's a creek not a stream.
I had a feeling something like this was going to happen.
Imaginary +1 to you sir since my +1 counts just as much as anyone elses :)
these are working for Wisky-Purdue....so I dont know if these sites will be staying on the btn and showing Michigan-Illinois but its worth a shot
Second link is where it's at.
A friend of mine is the Assistant AD in Champaign and will be seated at the scorer's table for the game. We have been talking shit via text message all day.
I hope he fucking hates me by the end of the night.
I hope everyone is ready to listen to Tim Doyle. "The Butterfly"
MGoBlue Live Audio to the rescue!
Yup, Tim Doyle made me mute the TV before the first commercial. That has to be some kind of record.
Just watching the end of the Purdue/Wisconsin game.... and Bo Ryan reminds me of Cornelius from Planet of the Apes.
Butterfly nickname needs to end. Seriously, this is getting ridiculous.
10-5 Michigan and I cannot take any more Butterfly talk!
thanks for that coaching moment doyle.....fucking idiot
This government crackdown on live streaming is really cramping my style.
That pass by Morris was incredible.
THE BUTTERFLY SPREADING HIS WINGS
please dont. i'm having a hard enough time hearing it said, i dont want to read the (absolutely terrible) nickname as well.
6 references through the first 10 min.
Some great passing happening for us early.
I was just told my mgo name is offensive and need to change it.....thoughts?
...but honestly, if that guy ever wants to make it as a broadcaster, he needs to drop the horrible nickname. It's the definition of forced, and it's getting pathetic.
The guy's enthusiastic, but he just doesn't have that "it" factor. Seems like he'd be a great teacher, but not for this business.
Great start thus far - keep it up boys!
Why does the big ten network continue to hire the worst commentators alive.
Jesus. Tim Doyle is awful. Here's a cage match: Who's worse as a color guy- Tim Doyle or Stephen Bardo? I honestly don't know. It's too close to call; they're both about the worst color people on television in any sport I regularly watch.
their gamecast doesnt refresh on time, and the box score is out of date, can I get a score?
19-15 Illinois 10 mins left in first half
13-10 good guys
If only we could start second halves like we start first halves
I've got a feelin Doyle's whole family is goin down.
I almost spit my beer out, hilarious.
plz let it stop
still think effective height doesn't matter?
holy shit this guy is annoying
doyle or collins? Both are equally obnoxious IMO.
"The number one rule in basketball...'stop the ball.'" The guy just pulls shit out of his ass.
...a YMCA shot?? wtf
Our defense looks lost out there
Did the guy covering the game for ESPN.com fall asleep or something? I was sitting there staring at the gamecast thinknig some kid broke their neck for how long it's been 5-4 Illinois with 18:12 left in the half.
Just a thought for defense.
Curious... I feel like JB is a coach that will let his team work through things sometimes instead of calling a timeout one or two possessions too soon. The score was 13-7 and Illinois went on a 12-2 run over 4 or so minutes. With such a young team, I feel like sometimes the TO's are a possession or two late. What does everyone think? Not a big deal, and will definitely benefit in years to come having JB's current philosophy, yet I can't help but wonder if it might help short term for JB to have a quicker trigger on the TO's.
I guess he is trying to allow them to fix things themselves, and also trying to save some timeouts for the second half
dribble into trouble and lull them to sleep
They just seem uncomfortable.
Stu knock those down...
Why don't you miss a few more 3's. If aren't feeling it then stop shooting it...
He needs to keep shooting. If he doesn't find his shot Michigan won't win anyway. He's getting good looks and shooting when he does.
The shorter 3-point line...
Did they raise it since Saturday?
There should be an investigation.
(But really, more in general, that it figures when we become a 3 point shooting team the easy line disappears).
What's cooler than being cool?
Come on guys. Lets get up and play.
Keep the camera on the ball!
this rim is angry with us....were we a bit too rough to it in the shootaround?
of the Wisconsin game. We are hopelessly undersized in the contest and the same damn plays haunt us.
this is starting to to look like the Dream Team against Angola.
OK. Maybe not that bad.
Just not very good.
Personally, I want to hear more "Butterfly" talk from Doyle. Why? Because it'd mean we're playing well.
On defense mostly, but even on offense. Defense has just been lazy getting to their spot/position, both on and off the ball. Offense people aren't setting their feet. The footwork on offense has been terrible, giving way to awkward looking shots. They're just playing lazy in a game they can't afford to play lazy during
1. Matta 2. Bo Ryan 3. Tim Doyle
SMOTRYCZ is spelled L-I-A-B-I-L-I-T-Y
And other needless flailing of limbs, kind of like how they can card people for flopping in soccer, but you know, instead of like soccer actually do it. Tizdale is annoying me greatly, almost as much as Doyle and Michigan not making shots.
Looking forward to a better second half effort.
did I miss something or were you referring to Smotz size?
1 1/2 - 2 years experience...?
I'm not so sure about McLimans. But Morgan continues to improve, and he can be a Big Ten space eater and relegate the rest to bench minutes (assuming Evan is a productive Beilein style 4 by then).
seen much in the past month or so that makes me feel confident Smotrycz will develop into the player we all hoping for. Maybe he'll learn what to do once he beats his man with a pump fake and maybe he'll pick up some quickness on D, but I wouldn't bet on it, especially the latter.
but he was exactly on point with his analysis in the first half
he said "for Michigan it was a tale of two halves"?
this team should consider lucky to be down only 10. We got killed on all levels that half. Smotrycz is killing us. that one possession where he beats his man, but passes it, gets the ball back, and misses a three was sickening.
Sad foreshadow of how the game was going to end. Drive to the hoop when you beat your man.
Before the game I was afraid we were going to be too small to win this game...
I think I may have been right :(
For defensive purposes I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Blake McLimans get some minuets. Listen I know that he is god awful on offense but if he and Morgan were in at the same time we could still get our interior offense with Morgan and still have our kickout shooters available. But it's obvious we need an answer for there height and lob it in over our head offense, and quite honestly Blake is our best answer because he actually is a good shot blocker and defender.
As more of a waltz guy, myself.
(Sorry...I don't really care about typos...unless it turns it into a much funnier image).
We missed a lot of open shots in the first, mostly Douglass, but if we knock a couple of those down we are right in this. We have to shoot well against bigger teams, and we didn't, hence the ten point deficit. We have shown on more than one occasion that we can get hot and shoot the lights out for a half. Hopefully we get hot. Go blue!
Tell yourself he's just flip-flopped position with Hardaway in the early impact player/project roles from the recruiting rankings. I mean, yeah, sure, it'd been nice to have TWO surprises, but when has being greedy worked as a Michigan fan lately...?
i like to poop
Such comments are always mental image disturbing.
As bad as we are playing if we could have just shot 30 percent from 3 point range we would only be down 4. That being said if Illinois would just decide to feed their bigs I don't see how we could stop them
this half of basketball could very well determine the season.
And makes getting one of the other unexpected wins to come through. (And of course, making sure we don't blow one we "should" win). This was just the one that could have had us talking "what we need to do to not blow the Tournament", rather than "what we need to do to make the Tournament".
We need to take advantage and get this down to a 2 possession game
minutes of careless backetball from both teams seems to have been a little more advantegous for us. Just a five point game if morgan can hit these two.
nm wasn't shooting foul
OMG Thjr. please do not break your neck.
I second that.
How is that not an intentional foul. He has a clear path to the hoop with a defender trailing
i hate that, reward the player with points but still give him a charge
Wait, so you can have a charge and still count the basket?
If the ball is already released when contact is made apparently
Gotta. Make. Our. Free throws.
We're shooting free throws on fouls the rest of the way, that's exciting for me.
Now make the fucking FREE throws.
Why has DM been so cold as of late?
this isnt volleyball
I have noticed a lot tonight that our players have rarely followed our shots. I personally have counted 5 separate occasions where the shooter could have gotten his own rebound
If we are in the bonus already we have to hit our FTs.
Morris has missed 2 (really 3 since one was the front end of a one and one) and Hardaway has missed 1. 3-4 points we can't afford to lose.
Stu does not need to run a fastbreak. and can hardaway get a foul please
This is so frustrating, we're right in this game and we just can't hit a freaking shot.
We are missing so many wide open threes. So frustrating
Shooting 1-12 from the 3...
How can we literally not hit anything....
And only down four.
Come on guys we got alligator blood.
Now is the time to make our run!
if we can get to the under 8 TO with him at 3 fouls we will be in good shape for a run to finish the game. Got to stay within 5-6 though. No mini-runs allowed.
Points to Doyle for "Hchanging around... Hchanging around." That is the one and only point I'll ever give him.
his metaphors are magical!
Much more enjoyable experience.
Wow, a Rounders reference? And a poor one at that. Needs to work on that Russian accent
Can't wait for him to say, "Just like a young man coming in for a qvickie, the Illini feel so unszatisfied."
1 lucky roll and a turnover later and we're 2 free throws away from a 2 point game
Except you forgot that we can't seem to hit free throws since the last game against IU
I hate these announcers so much it's infuriating. This is the second week this dickhole has made his Rounders "alligator blood" comment. What a fucking tool.
The butterfly spreads his wings!!
We gotta take advantage of being in the bonus so early.
Maybe if they shot better than 2-14 from 3.
I'm convinced that Illinois did something to the hoops so that our 3s are going in.
Alright. I'm here. We're good to go.
and that's mccamey.... come on ... we can do this
Morris has been on the bench for awhile, wonder if coach B is liking the way Stu has been slowing things down
most likely bc he has 3 fouls though
When stu isn't shooting well, his efficiency tanks more than any other player, because he isn't a great playmaker, plus he is always good for one or two defensive lapses ala the last McCamey three.
I gotta say I hate the commentary, but "if it ain't going to be easy, it's gonna be the Hardaway" gave me a good laugh.
Anybody else see that crap on the back of Douglass' arm? Was he attacked by nachos?
I just read through 4 pages of comments to find this, and I was starting to think I was crazy when no one else mentioned it. My best guess was bloody gauze, but it's very orange so I don't know what that would say about Stu's blood.
Looked like a mouse was being crushed in Stu's armpit.
But I think were about to start draining 3s
Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.............with some successful 3s
When I need to see a shot of Lloyd Brady in the crowd. That always makes me less nervous about these close games.
Am I the only one who gets extremely nervous when Smotrycz is on the floor?
Nope. He's been a liability lately.
Nope, but I also get nervous when Vogrich is in the game as well, unless he's standing wide open shooting a three
get morris in the game
Stu Douglas losing his mud.
Manny at Iowa treatment for Morris?
Can Jordan Morgan grow another 3 inches over the next year or two? That would be nice.
He droped 2 balls out of bounds
Why is it the game is all choppy, but the commercials are streaming perfectly...
Not to pile on, but how hard is this announcing gig? Are Greg Kelser and Tim McCormick that busy? Do they need volunteers?
Ahhh that was a charge
How the hell is that a blocking foul. He's totally set up with both feet on the floor.
Jim Burr must be tired from all the whistles he blew in last night's game.
classic Jim Burr
How is that not a charge.
stop going under the screens and stop shooting fallaway jumpers
What a stupid shot by Stu.
don't you need your proven leader who will not choke or get rattled? In a situation like this at an away venue. Seems like Morris is more susceptible to be rattled.
Three points. Two and a half minutes. Let's go
stu.......unneccesary shot to say the least.
ya, it was that unneccesary
Ugly shot for us
and find a body and block out on the shot
At this juncture in the game, Stu and Morris can't be taking tough outside jumpers like that
For being in the bonus for the majority of the half we have done an absolute terrible job of taking the ball to the hole and getting contact. Not to mention it's been awhile since we have gotten Hardaway a shot
Just wasting our possessions here trying long 2s.
Another BS....that was a jump ball!!!!!!!!!!!! wtfffff
College players "don't make money" Mr. Announcer. This isn't the part of the game where they do make money (supposedly).
eric collins looks like oscar martinez from the office
Wow how do u just stand there and waste 15 seconds then call a timeout
Not even getting a shot........
I only want to see hardaway shoot a 3....NO Stu
That ball hit the rim.
We just had nothing offensively the last 5 minutes
Or in that case, an inch.
That was a terrible possession. That just can't happen if you want to make the tourny
That was ugly. If only you could trade all 5 or so of our moral victories for a real one...
Why would they run the clock out? They're doing Illinois' job for them. Awful, especially coming out of a timeout.
So you are saying we got a chance!
Alright. Still have life left.
On the last possession?
Morris gets a clutch basket with :15 left, 53-52 Illini.
Do you like the quick two or would you rather have called a timeout and set up a three point play with our last time out?
That little stop there by Morris was beautiful. It's amazing how much he has improved.
Another foul and a missed free-throw . . . *crosses fingers*
Hold me tight.
Trombone guy? You're not intimidating. Go blow your horn.
hardaway no matter what
May be a miracle?
It looked like Smot was not fouling, but the refs were expecting a foul.
Son of a bitch
That last shot literally broke my heart....
If it literally broke your heart, I'm impressed you still gutted it out to post.
a;slkdjfa;lsdjkfa;lskdjjf;alskkdjfa;lsdkdjf; the last person I wanted taking that shot
Smot. That was on you. You'll learn, but man...you gotta take that to the hoop!
Jesus Monkeyfucking Christ.
A win would have put us alone in 4th. The loss puts us 9th.
The story of the season..
what a finish.. damn
You'd think that eventually we'd be able to pull out a close game....
I'm going to say that is it mostly because how young our team is.
I agree. It just hurts how many losses we've had by such a narrow margin. Good effort. Unfortunately 2-17 from 3 when we give up about 8,000 collective inches to the opponent won't do it.
Motherfucker! Maybe the NCAA will count moral victories?
that would have been so sick.
Sorry, but taking Illinois in Champaign down to the very last shot while shooting horrendously from long range is sorta the definition of "good" in my mind. Has lots of room to improve, but you gotta give this team some freaking credit.
They are good though....they just aren't great, but have the potential to be great. You don't take kansas to OT almost beat OSU , Illinois etc and then have a decent record when you aren't at least good.... If the big ten wasn't so good this year we would be in the tournament. This team I think is actually better than the team was when we went to the tournament 2 years ago, its just the big ten is better this year so its harder to get those 9 conference wins.
Oh well...it'll be nice when we can start 3 seniors like Illinois did today.
Forever alone :(
That first 3-ball when there was a clear path to the basket? Ugh.
Why in the world is Smotz shooting that shot. I understand he had a good look, but the ball doesn't even need to go into his hands in that situation. Unreal
Well we shouldn't have even been in this game with the way we were shooting. I hate to see it end like that but I'm not even sure how we were within 5 points for most of the game. If we would have hit a few more 3's this game was ours....why didn't smot drive to the bucket on that last shot!?!?! no one was there!!!!! ahhhh
We were in this game because Illinois is in a tailspin. It sucks we couldn't take advantage of it.
I would've been happier if Smotrycz wasn't on the floor at the end of the game. He had a very freshman game from start to finish. Frustrating decision making.
But if they play like that the rest of the way, they'll still have a fighting chance at the dance. Play to the wire at Illinois, that level will win a lot of games at home.
Oh, well, how's Top Chef going....?
If we keep up this play or even elevate it just a bit, I like our chances to be a bubble team.
Don't tell me I have it set to record.
That's all I'll say.
Still an outside chance for the dance!
He should have driven, had a clear path to the basket, all we needed was 2.
GODDAMMIT I HATE THESE TYPE OF LOSSES !!@@#@$#@
I said "don't shoot it, don't shoot it, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu arghhhhh........"
omg smotz so open to drive
is it me or did it look like Smotz had a clear lane to the rim after he pump faked.
No reason he should have the ball in that situation in the first place.
story of the season....fought hard, kept it close, but not enough in the end...great effort and the team needs to keep building momentum. Still alot of basketball left to be played!
Hey Evan, just a thought when you have a clear path to the basket, you and everyone else on your team hasn't made a 3 all night and you're down 2 on the road with a chance to send the game into O-T, you might want to take the ball to the bucket!!!!!
And, that last shot, I literally slumped in my chair at work and let out a groan. Heartbreaking that it was so very, very close.
But you can't shoot 2-17 from 3 and win on the road.
but you CAN shoot 3-17 from 3 and win on the road
3-17? Now that's a ridiculous assertion.
If they had shot 3-17 tonight, they would've won the game.
There it is.
Consider your understanding of basketball rocked.
Or 2 for 19 thats what the final box score is claiming
It was 2 for 17 before the last 2 missed shots.
I apologize to my keyboard for my facebook-reaction to this game. I'll try not to hurt it like this again.
They were clearly going for the win there at the end, but Smot taking that shot?? Even though Stu struggled mightily, i would have preferred him for a 3, he is cold blooded.
Now they pretty much need to win out in the regular season.
If you're Coach B, what do you say to the Wolverines right now in the locker room?
Through the end of the season and we may get an invite.
You all should have made your 3s tonight. We would have had a better chance of winning.
is my goddamn Johnnie Walker Red?
I'm guessing it's something along the lines of:
"Guys, you gave a good effort tonight; don't hang your heads. If you keep playing hard and stay focused, we're gonna pull out a few of these. It just wasn't our turn tonight."
There are many variations of this speech, but you can't really beat on a team that almost pulls out a tough road win and comes up short. Especially with a young team, you have to keep their confidence up and get them ready for the next game.
I'm sticking to my guns and saying this is a NIT team anyway. I think they could get to the Garden with even a semi-decent draw.
It might not matter, but we are one of the top 64+3 teams in the country for sure, imo.
Tough for young teams to win on the road. That's just life.
We still have a chance to make the tourney.
And hey, just watching meaningful Michigan basketball games in February is worth the price of admission.
I hope they can rebound and give that kind of effort against iowa
Trip home for Stu
We have a MUST Win at iowa on saturday, thats for sure. Listening to Ill. schedule we could def catch up to them, but hopefully our boys can let this one go and not go into iowa with there heads down and get a win. It's def. no gimme any place is tough to win on the road in the Big Ten, look at msu going into iowa and losing by 20
Really all of the games haven't been played and we still play Wisc. a top 25 team who we could beat. So to stay in any kind of consideration yes its a must win at Iowa because thats not a lose you can have on ur resume even for the NIT. But hell whats wrong with the NIT either.....Every analyst had this team finishing at the bottom of the big ten with 3 freshman starting so any end of the yr tourny is something to get excited about....way to be a debbie downer
NIT, definitely. All of the NCAA talk has been a little far-fetched IMO, but this board needs to calm down. Illinois was the game where we had the least win probability and it came down to the last possession.
OK, we get it. You're annoying.
2 for 18 from downtown?
Give this team credit, though. If you would've told me we were like 2/abajillion from threes, clawed back from a decent deficit in the second half, and it would come down to the last possession against Illinois AT Illinois, I would've called you crazy. This team is something special. Fuck all you who think otherwise.
There's a difference between constructive criticism and douchebaggery.
I think you need to check your douchebaggery levels as they are off the charts.
Also, you are a dickhead. Nothing in any post of yours could be considered constructive. Go root for another team. Although I am pretty sure you aren't a Michigan fan anyway.
For being a douche about it?
God this guy is so unpredictable. One game goes off for 16 then he has one of these games where he goes 2-11 and 1-8 from 3 pt land.
That shot where he dribbled on the right side of the key and jacked up a terrible jumper shows me that he has not grown out of his "dumb mistakes".
Can't pin the loss on him though. I think Illinois's length hurt us tonight. I know the rebounding numbers were close, but I think their lenght didn't allow us to get many open 3's and disrupted us driving in the lane.
no open 3s? we shot 18 threes and nearly all were open looks. unbelievable that only 2 went down. that was about the worst shooting performance i've ever seen. how many shots were made outside of 5 feet? 3 or 4. this game was in hand against a down illini team and they just didn't take advantage of it.
2nd or 3rd most painful Michigan loss of the past decade...
how about msu last year, or osu last year, or osu in 06 or msu in 04, all more painful than this.
For 10 months??
You've had YEARS to experience worse. And sometimes the losses as a kid stick with you for longer than the latter one's...
How about any game last year when we started out pre-season 15 with two supposed all big ten players-I went to all of those games as a student. Yikes. After watching every game over the last 5 years it's just nice to see an extremely young team contend like this.
Because you have to be playing for higher stakes for it to be REALLY painful.
I'm not going to knock Smotrycz there. He probably had no idea how much time was left and made a nice move to clear space for the shot. It just didn't fall.
Pretty bad night, he's a god. Better to have a guy who doesn't pass up the shot because scared. He'll learn what to do with it at the time.
Mchamey got that bounce in the first half, why couldn't Stu?!?!?!!?!? FML
Gah so close, another marquee win slips away. Great effort tonight boys.
The way Illinois has been sucking lately, I thought this game was winnable going in. I know KenPom disagrees, but I thought this was our best chance out of the Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin games. MSU has been playing better lately as well, so that game is a toss-up. Our tourney chances took a huge hit as far as I'm concerned. I tried the optimistic route, but I don't see anything other than NIT now.
I've got no problem with that, as long as the team bukilds on thsi experience for next year and comes out hungry for more success next year. We all knew the tournament was a pretty far out dream this year anyway.
Unfortunately, after finding out tonight that I didn't get a job which I'd aced the interview for, I had already put a hole in the door. Just when it looked like they might pull it out, I thought, "maybe this night won't all be horrible". But it was.
And I hurt my hand, too.
Great effort by the guys despite the loss. I said at the beginning of the season that NIT is fine, and next year this team should be very scary.
can we stop referring to Stu as a three point shooter to a guy who shoots threes? He is not a reliable shooter from outside. Im not getting on him for that last three of the game either. He simply is not consistent.
Doyle is the worst announcer in the world. I wanted to pound my head into the ground every time he spoke.
Entering tonight's game, Douglass was shooting 39.8% from 3.
Gonna have to win one game we are favored in, one game that will be a toss-up, and one of two games where we will be the underdog. It's gonna be tough. I thought our best chance was to win today. I have a hard time believing we will beat wisconsin. We have never beat wisconsin under beilin and the games at home haven't even been close.
I don't want to kill the guy, because he is just a freshman, but Smotroyzc is killing us. Can't play defense. I saw twice he clearly beat his man, and a clear lane to the hoop (one of which was the last shot) but he decided to pull up or pass the ball.
Unbelievable, if we had shot 12%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from 3 we would have won that game
But, hey, were down but not out
It would be one thing if stu wen 1-8 whiile launching up shots in his face...But he was wide open for most of them. I wish hardaway became more of a factor and took a few more threes (the past few games everytime i see hardaway take a three that makes me go NONONO why did you take that!? he ends up making it)
Not sure why. His stroke is like butter. He might be the best spot up shooter on the team.
