Michigan vs. Delaware St. - The Bands

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

So I was listening to the morning show on WTKA and they were talking to The Angel, and started talking about how good DSU's band is, and what a treat it will be to see them. And as this game will be over by the 2nd quarter, I figure people's minds will wander, and there may be more attention paid to the bands than usual. And if they are really good college band, are we in any danger of them looking a lot better than our band, considering all the problems people have had with the MMB this year? I figure it's a slow week, and frankly, the bands might be more compelling than this game. So if the Michigan Band doesn't bring their A game, I have a feeling a lot of people are going to certainly be able to hear DSU's band better than ours. Though at this game the crowd should be laid back and quiet enough that they shouldn't drown out anything.

The DSU band is called The Approaching Storm and the chearleaders/dance group is called D'Elegance. I'm gunna go out on a limb here and say that as good as the Michigan Marching Band is, they should probably take notes during half time. Especially the chearleaders.

If anything it will be very entertaining. Get your hot dog during the game and make sure you don't miss halftime.

I doubt that DSU (or Southern, or Grambling, or Florida A&M, etc) would make the Michigan band look bad... just a totally different way of putting on a show. It's great to hear that the band is coming though - that's a big cost for a small school.

Run n Shoot vs. Power I offenses...

Both can produce wins & points, but one is about appreciating execution and the other is about "OMG hooo-eee, we just threw the ball 58 times!!!"

I leave further analysis to you all.

My Money is on the Hornets. They will be more impressive. Book It.

But, DSU is the underdog...so the MMB can still win , just not cover the spread in this Battle of the Bands.

...For fear of starting another flame war. I tried to choose my words..carefully. Suffice to say people can't hear them. I'm sure you can find the arguments for and against with a board search...it was the longest thread this site has had all year.

Their band is something to look forward to, I guess. Decided to stay home for this one and watch the game on Big Ten Network.

Didn't know a thing about Delaware State and thought I'd check them out. The total student body is under 4,000. WTF?

Who booked these guys? Attendance at the Big House may not be the biggest crowd in America this coming Saturday afternoon.

First, the reason we don't announce "the largest crowd anywhere....." this year, is because PSU has a slightly larger capacity (107,282 to 106,201). That will change next year, as we will be at 110,000 capacity.

HOWEVER, despite their advantage this year, we've actually been outdrawing them:

Season Totals
Michigan 435,318 4 games (109,019, 110,278, 107,903, 108,118)
Penn State 530,673 5 games (104,968, 106,387, 105,514, 109,316, 104,488)

Season Avg
Michigan 108,829.5
Penn State 106,134.6

PSU has Minnesota coming in this Sat, so I'm not convinced they will outdraw us.

Also, the Attendance race for the year is pretty much over, even if PSU averaged 110,000 for its 3 remaining games(!), we would only need to average 106,339 in our four games to stay ahead.

They haven't been announcing "the biggest crowd watching football in America today" since last year, I don't think, with the construction and attendance down. If they've still been doing it, I've missed it. I assume they'll go back to saying it when the construction is finished.

Not only is it Delaware State, but it's during fall break, so many students will be gone this weekend. I'm sticking around, but I think attendance will be relatively sparse in the student section.

is gonna be more technically sound damn is Deleware State gonna be entertaining. Most weeks all we get in terms of opposing bands are worse versions of ours, but for once we get a completely new style.

Technically Sound versus Entertaining?

I'd put my money on "The Approaching Storm" this Saturday. Shit, because of the name alone I am moderating my halftime plans so I won't miss them.

I know there are a number of MMB members and alums on the board, and they can make a compelling case for "technically sound" - that's cool. I'll take the DSU show Sweet 16 and D' Elegance included!

Neg me away into a drum line MMB!

The game is sold out who shows up doesn't matter, it's not taken into consideration when referring to the official attendances numbers. The extra bumps comes from who the other team brings to game (IE a band, extra staff etc.), any extra staff for the game at the stadium, extra media passes granted, extra field and president box passes granted.
