Michigan vs. Cleveland State mens basketball open thread

It's a great teaching opportunity here to practice against zone and press in a game situation. Hopefully JB makes sure the players use it that way rather than fun-time-alley-oop-fest which I assume most 18-22 kids would rather turn it into.

I'm glad I didn't get negged with "we're up 30...shutup," but that's exactly what I was trying to say. There are still teaching moments at least until 5 minutes left.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:28 PM ^
I don't disagree with the content of that post. I would just like a little more positivity...I mean we are up 30. Obviously we are not executing perfectly but you seem unfairly dismissive of the lead.

This is the first time a young team is playing a trap zone, I wouldn't call them struggling a bit a loss of focus and intensity.

OMG DENARD SIGHTING
EVERYONE DRINK

Where's the Squaretree?
November 13th, 2012 at 9:25 PM ^
Who's the chick? Is that Denard's girlfriend? Luckiest!!!

Against this zone and high pressure, I'd like to see Trey and Spike get some run together. We're going to need 2 ball handlers versus tough full court pressure down the road.
I'd like to see Albrecht-Burke-Hardaway-McGary-Morgan
...just see what that lineup does vs. this pressure.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:26 PM ^
That's a really small backcourt to run out, though. I'm less concerned after seeing THJ's improvement as a ball handler.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:28 PM ^
Because that's exactly what Coach B went to.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:38 PM ^
Yeah, but I just don't know if you can play that backcourt against a better team for any extended period of time.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:29 PM ^
You put in shooters against a zone trap, I think putting in Hardaway and Stauskus is the right call. You aren't supposed to dribble through a zone, you pass and cut until you find an open shot.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:37 PM ^
That's why I said pressure over and over. Not just against a zone.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:56 PM ^
Man to man pressure is different then zone pressure. The whole reason for zone pressure is to try to get the opponent to dribble into a trap, which is why I don't agree with the reasoning of we need our best dribblers out there, I think it's more important to have shooters who will be open when someone kicks out from a trap. If they're pressing in man, I agree 100% you want dribblers. I'm not saying you're wrong or I'm right, that's just my basketball 2 cents.

It is against Iowa, and it is late on a Tuesday. Do you think they prep 24-7? does Coach Hoke make them wear their Ipods with subliminal gameplan recordings on them when they go to sleep?
Denard has appeared at a LOT of BBall games over the years, as have many of the players.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:24 PM ^
I love that block call against Albrecht. The more they do to cut out that kind of flopping, the better.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:26 PM ^
Yeah the radio announcers weren't too happy about that call....
November 13th, 2012 at 9:25 PM ^
Was he in the restricted area?
November 13th, 2012 at 9:27 PM ^
No, he just flopped on marginal contact.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:27 PM ^
Over/Under Denard getting more close up facetime than points Michigan scores vs. Ohio (football) this year.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:29 PM ^
That's not how over/under works...
November 13th, 2012 at 9:33 PM ^
It just depends on how many points you think Michigan will score.
I think we'll score 27 points...so I'll take the OVER on apperances by Denard at basketball games this season.
I know how it works.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:35 PM ^
I thought you were talking about just at this game.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:33 PM ^
CSU got destroyed in the first half and improved dramatically in the second half. Which is apparenly how fatigue works in Bruce-Pearl-Land where tiredness advances like Benjamin Button.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:34 PM ^
They misses "gimmes" in the first half. We also came out way too complacent.
Lastly, we outscored them 30-2 in the paint at halftime. They went to a zone and we started shooting over it. Thus more runouts for CSU.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:33 PM ^
Hardaway's so much better defensively than last year. He just had a great help and recover on the last possession. You can't do that unless you're moving your feet and are positioned exactly where you need to be on the floor.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:35 PM ^
A little self-evaluation and effort will do that.
He's also a million times better on the boards.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:34 PM ^
We played after them...granted their game went to OT but we had a few hours less of rest and all of our players had to get up and go to class today...I don't buy the fatigue argument.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:36 PM ^
We didn't have to travel, though. But there's a lot more going on here than fatigue.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:41 PM ^
I mean cleveland state is less than 3 hours away from ann arbor...is that travel really that impactful on their ability to play basketball? It's not like they flew across the country on a red eye flight.

LOL they counted down with 11 seconds still on the clock and he fell for it
November 13th, 2012 at 9:38 PM ^
Was amazing in the first half and a bit less so in the second. It almost feels like he's hesitating on inside moves. The whole team is sloppier in the second, but a lot of it seems to be related to trying different offensive concepts, so it's hard to be that upset.
November 13th, 2012 at 9:39 PM ^
Get these guys out and get guys in that will simply run some offense and execute. Not that they're going to develop bad habits. But it's just ugly basketball. Plus it hurts their stats, and that's always important.

Pearl talking about a teaching moment...lol, not when 4 guys are sitting at the scorers table.

He's definitely become a leader. I'll be honest, he was a selfish player last year. But this year it's been a 180, he clearly doesn't care about the NBA, stats, or any indiv. recognition.
