Michigan played a complete game today.  They managed to play completely awful in every facet of the game. Had this been against pretty much anyone but Akron it would have been a loss.

4 Gardner turnovers. Hot and cold Toussaint. Lewan injury. Wile punted like garbage. Weak 4th and 1 punt. 3 missed FG combined between the teams. Interior line mostly getting blown to little bits. No backups. Strobel didn't fucking get to play because he was injured. Spiritually another Horror, even if we "won" the ballgame.

Good: Chesson catch/TD, did not lose the game on the scoreboard.

Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?

This effort was unacceptable - yes, I said it.

The OL and DL would've been beat up by my local peewee football squad today.

It stinks. It's over. We will forget about it in three weeks, as long as the team gets things together and starts playing well.
I think it's a massive let-down game and little more. Lousy week of practice, vanilla gameplan, noon start.
I hope so.

Mattison's bend dont break is getting old.  If you cannot pressure with 4 you have to take risks.  This is Akron and they dominated 2nd half on offense.  How many blitzes did he bring? 3? Yes it exposes your back but so does a QB with 8 seconds to throw.  You dont give Manning or Brady all that time because even with 7 playing passing defense they find holes.  This philosophy doesnt work for this defense who does not have ability to create a pass rush.  Yes Nebraska has no defense but this defensive philosophy is going to cost 50+ against that offense. OSU too.  p.s. Frank Clark = most overhyped player in past 5 years. Nothing today against a MAC level OL.

But against Akron...you gotta play. Mattison coached his worst game at Michigan. It's like everyone knew what Michigan was going to do and adjusted except him. We either put 7 on the line and blitzed them all or we played a 2-deep shell and rushed 4. why couldn't we disguise anything?

I think the idea is that against Akron, you shouldn't need a complicated gameplan to win.  You save the good blitzes, stunts etc. for the big boys.

The D looked fine in the first half.  If our offense had put this game to bed in the first half like it should, and could have, there wouldn't be much Mattison angst.

Looked like lots of issues up front - gonna be a long season if we can't get the run game going against Akron. Also still no pressure from the DL and thus a lot of coverage issues in the secondary. Hopefully this is just hangover from the ND game.

I feel bad for Akron - they totally deserved to win this stinkfest.

Postives

  • A win

Negatives

  • Offense
  • Defense
  • Special Teams
  • Coaching
  • Crowd/attendance
  • Shitty delivery pizza for lunch

But in all seriousness, I don't think I've seen a UM team just so disinterested and totally unfocused.  I'm hoping its a wake up call and that starts with the Captains/Seniors.  Could be a very long season or one to remember - only time will tell.

Fortunately that's now just a teachable moment, a portion of the Big Ten TWIS, and a drop in the meaningless polls, instead of Horror II: The Horribler Horror.

Hopefully it means the coaching staff gets the team to take everyone as seriously as Notre Dame.  Almost makes me root for ND to just blow the crap out of Purdue to make us feel better about last week.

This has to be a preperation/readiness/emotional hangover issue right? Remember, this team beat ND. I'm just trying to reconcile the difference between this Saturday and last, but I'm having a very hard time doing it.

Every good team has a bad game now and again. Towson, an FCS team, took LSU, a top-10 FCS team, to the wire in Death Valley last year. Bad games suck, but they happen. We've seen what this team is capable of when it's on it's game.

We've got a lot of crap we need to clean up on, but a win is a win. Shake it off, accept the fact that you played a bad game, and move on to next week.

now we all know how Sparty has felt the past couple of weeks. Dear Sparties: I'm Sorry. I was mean. That was wrong. You have a very good defense. Can we borrow it?
