Michigan to vote on team captains before the season again.

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on

Harbaugh said that they will be voting on team captains 10 days before the first game. Who do you think it will be? Unlike previous years, there doesn't seem to be any obvious leaders on either side of the ball but I'm going to guess Desmond Morgan will likely be one of them.

Given that character seemed to be the greatest attribute of Hoke recruits, I would imagine someone will rise to the top on offense. I just have no idea who that will be.

Based on practice reports, Peppers is a clear leader on the field. I could see him winning in a team vote. Does anyone know if this years captains are restricted to seniors?

I have no idea what goes on inside Harbaugh's head (I doubt anyone but him really does), but something tells me he doesn't restrict captains to being seniors just because they're seniors. He seems crazy enough to the point where he'd make a true freshmen a captain if they proved to be the best leader on the team.

As it is a new era of Michigan football that we seem to be settling into here, I am actually content to sit back and see who emerges initially under Harbaugh's way of doing things and hopefully be impressed / pleasantly surprised. Like others, if I had to guess right now, I would also say Desmond Morgan is one of them, but it is hard to say who else at this point, this far out from fall camp.

Good. It made absolutely no sense to do it at the end of the season. Teams need known leaders from players, which is almost as important as good leader coaches.

Rudock. The guy isn't flashy but he's known as a great leader. Russell Wilson was a team captain in his grad transfer year too so it wouldn't be unprecedented

If the captains are going to be uppeclassmen:

Defense: Desmond Morgan and Willie Henry.  Offense: Jake Rudock and either Erik Magnuson or Amara Darboh. Special Teams: Jehu Chesson (because Arsenal FC fans have to give preference to the Gunners.)

Others considered:

Defense: Joe Bolden, Mario Ojemudia, Jarrod Wilson, James Ross III and Chris Wormley. Offense: Drake Johnson (even though he might be taking a medical redshirt season), Jehu Chesson and Joe Kerridge. Special Teams: Sione Houma.

Before their unfortunate non-football issues, Dennis Norfleet and Graham Glasgow also might’ve been considered.

That would get him my vote. Kind of symbolizes the change in attitude at the top. Morgan would be no surprise either. On offense, maybe a QB if the voting takes place after it's clear who's starting. Otherwise, it could be a bit awkward. I'll guess Chesson, with Kerridge if it has to be a senior.

I would be shocked and somewhat disappointed if Peppers isn't a captain. He was the only guy openly lauded by the coaching staff through the spring for his play and leadership.

Voting for captains before the season starts? That....that actually makes sense! Amongst his many other faults I hated how Hoke had captain voting AFTER th season. Captains are supposed to lead your team INTO and THROUGH a season. With Hoke it was like "OK guys, let's vote on captains that will lead us into games that have already taken place and can walk poudly as captains in street cloths because well, you turned your uniforms in yesterday." Putz.

Hoke did it for ONE year and word is the PLAYERS asked to do it that way. Rich Rod did it for 3 years and plenty of coaches around the country do it...coaches that win and are way more successful than Michigan over the past 7 years. I didn't like it either but don't act like it's unheard of...Hoke isn't pioneering ANYTHING. It also makes perfect sense if your underclass man felt like the reason they struggled the year before was because there was too much emphasis on the seniors and the seniors were poor leaders. This was the case at Michigan and I know that for a fact. Many of the young guys did not like the Lewan way of leading,..especially with his behavior off the field. Many thought there were sophomores and juniors who were the leaders on the team and Hoke was ALWAYS so pro-seniors until that final year. It was dumb, but he had a reason...as do many other coaches in America. Putz.

Hoke was the head coach. The buck stopped there. Do you have kids? As a parent, do you let them do anything they wanted as long as they outvoted you in numbers? He either didn't care and let that change go through or he advocated for it. Either way, it was his decision.

I feel like someone with kids wouldn't have made that awful analogy. Plenty of coaches have made the same decision and been successful. Again, let's stop acting like Hoke made this decision against the better judgement of every other coach in college football. We weren't good two years ago and the leadership was awful. I know multiple players talked to coaches about the program's emphasis on seniors...everything was for the seniors and the seniors were supposed to be an extension of the coaches. They weren't...they didn't set the example and many of the players thought the leaders were underclassmen. Hell there were multiple reports of Peppers being a leader on the team as a freshman last year. Hoke made a decision to place less emphasis on the seniors and wanted to recognize the leaders at every level. Again, Taylor Lewan wasn't as well received from the previous year and there was a notion that his way of leading was the Michigan way and every senior class was going to follow that style. Think about this year, a Frank Clark is likely a captain. That's coincidence, but clearly we haven't had great leaders since Martin and RVB and co. It failed. But let's not act like if we had captains at the beginning of the year then we would've been in the CFB Playoffs.

I still can't believe Lewan was a captain. I've been watching interviews of him from the last week of NFL OTAs (because I like keeping up on former Wolverines), and while the dude was obviously one of the best OTs in the country, and did a great job on Clowney, Lewan manages to STILL come off like a dick in every interview.

My question would be, because I don't understand it. Are the captains voted at the END of the year, the captains for NEXT year?

Or are is it more like an end of the year awards where they get the "title" of captain at the end?

You may have already explained it a little, but, are there any other reasons that coaches choose to vote on captains at the beginning or the end of the year?

Thanks!

Just don't think most guys would attempt the "stake" without the respect and approval of their teammates.

Morgan and Kerridge also

Well based on observing some of the players together off the field, & if they were picking only from the guys I know, I think Kalis, Des, and all else being equal I think Graham for sure, but of course with the circumstances it's problematic.
