Michigan Volleyball bounced from 1st round of NCAA Tourney

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

MIchigan, who had an amazing run to the Final 4 last year, will play LSU tonight in Seattle in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Washington is the host school & they could be a potential Second Round opponent should Michigan win tonight. A free HD stream is available through the Pac-12 Network. As opposed to the crappy ESPN3 streams last year.

Michigan wins set 2, 25-9 (!). Intermission. Michigan blew a 2-0 lead earlier in B1G play so it's vital for their confidence in this tourney that they put lsu away quickly.

Michigan loses third set 15-10, gives up three straight to lose 3-2.  Dissapointing ending to a very dissapointing season.  To someone who has watched the team a lot, why was the team so much worse this year than last?

Ugh. An early exit in the Tournament plus another medicore regular season.

The regular season part is the norm for this program.

Last year's tourney run was amazing. But other than that, this program has really done nothing other than reach an Elite 8 & a few Sweet 16s.

When will Michigan be competitive in the B1G? They finished in an 8th place tie. Hell, the closest this program has ever been to a B1G Championship was 3rd place. That's unaccetpable.

That and humiliating records against the top teams in this conference. 3-44 against PSU, 22-44 against illinois, 15-46 against minnesota. 19-51 vs ohio and they aren't even that great a program.

What is it going to take to start beating these teams and winning B1G Championships? I realize this is probably the best conference in the nation, but two top-4 finishes in this conference in the last decade ain't cutting it.

Oh come on. The Big 10 is perhaps the strongest conference in college volleyball, a sport that has been pretty much dominated by the same handful of teams for decades.

Unlike you, I remember what this program was like before they were making the tournament. Because I was there. Watching the team. It wasn't pretty. I went to State College for the program's first appearance in the Sweet 16, only to see the team get absolutely trounced by PSU. Yet that was a huge step. Last year was a huge step. This year was a down year, but you're acting like there's something wrong with what Coach Rosen is doing with this team.

The fact this team is making the tournament every year is a huge accomplishment, and the fact that a down year is losing in the first round is a huge deal. So give it a rest with the ridiculous hand-wringing. When you're in a conference with Nebraska and Penn State, you're fighting an uphill battle from the start. They're doing just fine.

Why don't you wait until the program really regresses before you start outright questioning the coaching staff of one of Michigan's most consistently successful non-revenue sports?

Oh how adorable, the age thing again. If you're going to put me down, can you at least come up with some different ways?

Where did I say I want to get rid of Mark Rosen? Once again, you make assumptions that are wrong. He did GREAT things last year. That tourney run was a blast! I was there for the banner raising this season.

It's not that Michigan is a tomato can. But it would be nice to see a B1G Championship some day. All I'm saying. I don't know what it will take. Maybe PSU just loads up on the 5 star recruits of volleyball.

But the last thing I want is them to get rid of the Rosens.

Your whole "ain't cutting it" routine, to start. And the "done nothing except Elite 8's and Sweet 16's" thing, too.

I brought up the age thing because it's clear you have no perspective on where Michigan Volleyball has been, and the fact that it was a long and gradual process that took a while to get where it is right now. For those of us who actually cared about Michigan Volleyball before, oh, last season, your fairly ignorant "why can't we just win NOW?" criticisms ring pretty hollow. Great that you were there for the banner raising, but there was a lot of Michigan Volleyball leading to that moment.

"For those of us who actually cared about Michigan Volleyball before, oh, last season"

More ignorant assumptions. Love it.

Actually, that isn't the case, AT ALL. I've been to quite a few matches at Keen going as far back as 2004 and been following the program for a long time.

And I realize it took a long time to get to this point. At least there's consistency now with 20-win seasons (save 2013) and NCAA bids. Things should be getting even better now that they have a new arena to sell future recruits on.
