Peppers at 10, which seems low.
I believe Dykstra just apologized to Coach Beilein for the hard foul at the end of the game when it was out of hand.
If so, very classy.
Best of luck to SDSU next year.
i missed the live blog oh so much.
Please help. I need to know what "snowflakes" means in the blog world. What is the origin? I've been wondering this for years.
I usually use snowflakes when we lose in Football or Basketball, but I got yelled at a few weeks ago after a win when I just put "Postgame Thread" so now I always make sure "snowflakes" is in there.
That said, there is a story behind it. I think MWolverine would know.
I think everyone has a thought (that is probably repetative) that they think is unique. Unique like a special snowflake. Just a guess, though...
It's this. Put your "unique" thoughts here.
So it's a circlejerk?
Pretty much all online forums/communities are basically a circlejerk.
When we win, yes. When we lose, kind of...
After football games, everyone created his own thread entitled, "Michigan should run the ball better" or "I am unhappy." I put in a rule that you couldn't create a post-game thread that was just the stuff that people were already discussing in existing threads. It's called the snowflake rule because not everyone's unsupported and repetitive opinion is a special little snowflake that needs to be shared.
Now people create a thread after games in which people can put their own random thoughts.
Thank you for the clarification. I may now sleep in peace.
BiSB instituted it this past football season when after a game there would be thirty different threads about the game and most of them similar. So the snowflake came into effect as being one post where original thoughts and different thoughts would all be posted in one place. Not ten threads about "This team doesn't have heart" or something stupid or similar to that.
But then that guy rage-quit, so why we still follow his directives is beyond me.
Michigan won by more than Sparty!
THAT'S ONLY CUZ IZZO TOLD THEM TO EASE UP CUZ HE DIDN'T WANT APPLING AND CO. TO GET TIRED OUT BEATING THEM UP. LOLOL scUM WOULD PROBABLY LOSE TO VALPO BY 20+ AT LEAST
And to think, all those Sparty fans who rush ordered their SDSU gear so they could troll our game. Damn, that shit almost worked.
The Sparty fans I sat by had a hilarious inferiority complex. Dude commented the entire game with his vast knowledge of all things and Michigan basketball. Lamented 3 times in the first half how for years Michigan fans didn't care about basketball and one good year gets them "all the nice stuff." The poor guy wakes up every morning and says "fuck I am the little brother." I found it terribly annoying at first but soon found it very entertaining. I enjoyed the game thoroughly.
Defense must just be a Big Ten thing.
Excellent time for GRIII to show up. When he's aggressive like he was today, (and assuming Trey isn't this off) who knows how far we could go. Great win.
Seriously. What a perfect time to get it back
No doubt, He was more aggressive and looking for his shot tonite than he has been all year combined. Was nice to see.
starts playing like a first round draft pick in college on the 13th overall seeded team, we could go far.

STRIPPERS AND COCAINE!!!11!!!!!!1!!!
A---- fucking men!!
We don't need to know about your private activities with men... Let's just celebrate the win.
I'm in tampa. I know what you mean.
2001 odyssey...? eh?
With that avatar.
It's all about:
(1) GR3 hitting outside shots.
(2) McGary hustle.
(3) Great TEAM effort.
By McGary, Robinson, THJ
Hope Burke is ready to pour it on as well- we will need him
Is the game on Saturday??
Has been set yet. Probably later tonight.
Came up huge when Trey had an off night. Can't wait to see everyone "n-sync"
That's one way to take that..
I recognize everyone except the bald dude in the back right.
RGIII is back from the knee injury already?
Someone send Jake Ryan to Washington, D.C.
Trey had a bad game, but I'm happy to see that we can win a game easily by relying on our other players. Now hopefully everyone can pull it together for the next few games.
Michigan wins big and Burke had an off night. This is great in soo many ways. Burke will be back with a vengeance and the rest of the team is playing great. Best game of GRIII's career - defensively and offensively
I love GRlll and McGary!
Happy. As bad as Burke played, everyone else stepped up, the D looked competent at times, and we won by more than expected.
Even if the shots weren't falling, 7 assists to 2 TOs is not bad at all.
We played terrible and covered the spread. Don't know what that means for VCU.
Hats off to McGary for a loud game. Bigger hat off to THJ for a quiet monster game.
We were far, far away from playing terrible.
It was pretty rough in the first half, say minutes two through ten.
Yep, that's a normal game of basketball against good competition.
How was that terrible?
Do people expect us to roll over everyone? This was obviously not a bad team we played. This is not like football, where the difference in quality is massive between big and small schools.
Had it going. Hopfully Burke was saving his best for Saturday. Nice to see GRIII stroking it again. Hopefully having more guys peaking these next few games.
Resting Morgan? Keeping him fresh for VCU?
They actually looked like the team that was #1 at one point from about 10:00 to go in the first half on.
I hope Saturday's game is noon or 7 because M Hockey plays Miami (NTM) at 4:35
1. McGary makes some boneheaded mistakes sometimes, but man I love that guy's energy.
2. THJ and Robinson 16-22. That's just not fair.
3. How the Burke fall wasn't a foul is beyond me.
I love McGary, but you are correct, the guy plays so young sometimes. Hopefully he starts to really grasp the mental aspects next year. Combined with some better conditioning and he could be a true force.
... his own player bumped into him according to Coach's explanation from the refs. I found this bit amusing:
"That was a scary moment for us. One thing I know - the kid is tough as nails,'' Michigan coach John Beilein said. "That was not a good feeling, but I saw him sort of move quickly right away, felt he was going to be fine, then I went about my business of arguing with the officials. But apparently it was our own player that knocked him off balance.''
Anyone else going to watch as if you're an assistant coach?
Also, did I hear something about 3 VCU players being sick and/or injured?
That was Akron. Two sick, one injured. After losing their point guard, this will make the VCU game a straight blows outs.
Thanks for the clarification...I caught it at the tail end.
Well, let's hope Trey got his bad game of the season out and now it's time to be the best player in the country.
Should be a great game, I think (and hope) we come out on top.
that coach B. finally made it out of the "2nd round".
Like we did two years ago? Or is only last year the history of Beilein?
called the "2nd round" then, as it is now. The first round games were called "play-in" games two years ago.
No, they changed the name before then. The 2011 team also went to the "Third Round."
Regardless, it's a dumb joke. The guy had a lot of tourney success at WVU.
He made it out two years ago when we took Duke down to the wire. And when we played Oklahoma (the Blake Griffin Show) two years before that after beating Clemson.
the first round was actually the first round, two years ago, because you had the "play-in" game at that time. Now the "play-in" game is called the "1st round".
so you really are trolling
I had tickets to the 2nd and 3rd round games in Cleveand in 2011. The team that OSU played won in the First Foiur to advance to the 2nd round. Michigan's beatdown of Tennessee was in the 2nd Round and the game against Duke was in the 3rd round..
but I felt we were the better team from the start of the game, it was just a matter of if we were gonna take it or not. We took it. Especially McGary, GRIII, and THJ
Trey got a bad game out of the way.
i hope Burke realized that if he distribute the ball first and try not to be the scorer, thst we will be a dangerous team to contend with.
I seem to recall him averaging 17 or 18 ppg all season. Seems like trying to score has worked out so far
Except for in our last 12 games prior to the tournament. But yeah, other than that you're correct.
Well in 6 of those 12 it worked and it's not a stretch to say that it should have been 8 of 12, so..(not counting the BTT game)
I would love it if he scored and distributed Ike the first half of the season. You can do both.
but he's actually averaged 21.5 ppg in our last 12 games
I'm not saying that he wasn't awesome in those games, just that him being awesome doesn't always translate into wins. The team had a different mentality last night than they did for most of the Big 10 season because of the way Trey played. Not trying to jump to conclusions because GR3 was actually knocking down shots an McGary was on fire, but it's at least worth noting.
The Burke-Wolters showdown was kind of disappointing
Bo Ryan loved it.
Wolters: So glad he was basically a non-factor. Excellent job by the D to mostly neutralize him.
physical with Wolters, it seemed to me, and the officiating was letting the contact go. I think it made him uncomfortable, Burke had to play with a lot of contact too. Refs have allowed a lot of contact on him all year and he has still hit shots. Tonight they didn't drop. Most were good looks. 2-3 seemed rushed in an effort to get going but overall I liked how he didn't try to force it too much. Found his teammates and played good D.
With Burke, THjr and GRIII, going pro?
No. Only a title win
I personally think GR3 and THJ should be back for another year, but if they both get hot in the tourney and increase their draft stock, it bodes well for our chances to may some noise and have a deep run.
Yes. But I could also see them all going pro if we lose next round.
Charles Barkley is worse than me right now describing M's reliance on guards. Waa waaaaa.
Does anybody know why Morgan didn't make an appearance tonight?
The last few games
He was the worst player on the floor during the B10 tourney. Glad Beilein made this decision and glad mcgary's lungs held up.
But this was all about match ups. SDSU had no post presence and McGary and Horford are just better away from the basket. Morgan will see time before this is over.
Ahem. I mean. I knew we'd win.
Man, that game looked tight. Loved the McGary steals and the GRIII/THJ show. Happy Burke is fine.
On to VCU!
I know Sir Charles isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he sounds like he popped a couple of sleeping pills about 15 minutes ago.
the brightest light on the Christmas tree.
He does drugs now...
The big ten is tough and I believe all of our conference will advance pretty far into the tournament. Would rather play Kansas than OSU or Indiana that is for sure.
My bracket with Vapo, Davidson and Belmont in the Final Four is not looking good right now...
As long as minny wins the title for you it won't be all that bad, just maybe...
That bracket never looked good.
but then again, pennys were always more knowledgable about baseball
But it was good tonight and the game plan to switch on screens put the onus on the other Jackrabbits to make shots because Beilein seemed determine to not allow Wolters to beat them.
Kudos to the staff and the players for executing.
Aren't we talking about Baby Seal U?
There are no Baby Seals
Yeah, but the game plan, and more importantly the execution, actually forced them to play like Baby Seal U. Wolters is very, very good at scoring, and our plan was to take him out of the game. And it actually worked. That's a positive.
The only "baby seals" in the NCAAs are the #16 seeds. The #13 seeds are generally solid teams, just from small conferences (which hurts their RPI).
Trey with a somewhat off game creates others to step up and take some of the load off of his back... finally.
Tourney win? It feels like decades?
Same decade even!
He forgot the highlight of the year with Stu dunking on Rocky Top :(
Dude, this is his third tourney win here. Where were you in 2009 (Clemson) and 2011 (Tennessee)?
If they do what they did tonight and Trey can get his shot to fall, we're a tough out. And damn good job by the defense.
We were only +1 on the boards, but we'll take that going forward.
What time do we play Saturday?
I presume Sparty goes first since them and Memphis played earlier.
Not sure exactly, but since the played in the evening today, they'll play in the evening again. It won't be a noon game.
I was most impressed with McGary keeping his motor up all game. His endurance is often what kills him and tonight he played well the whole game. Horford did a good job with his minutes too. Okay not seeing Morgan until we hit a really strong post team.
Seeing the substitutions in the first half really gave me confidence that the Wolverines would be able to wear down the Jackrabbits.
Michigan won! I'm happy! Now back to nail biting about my bracket. Belmont you are dead to me right now.
To hell with Belmont, bucknell, Pitt and maybe UNLV if they don't turn it around!
Yeah I had Pitt in the Final Four. Oops.
What? You crazy!
Just Belmont and UNLV for me but that was a nice little 6 point turnaround. Come on Belmont. You can do it!!
This time, David regressed to the mean in the second half instead of doing an Ohio U or PSU. Also, it looks like McGary might have won a starting job for the rest of the tournament. It was great to see that Michigan can win without a lot of scoring from Burke, too.
Before tomorrow is finished, I'll bet there will be at least one highly-seeded team that wishes they had perfromed like this in their first game, not counting 5-seed OK St's cliche loss to a very underrated Oregon at 12.
Here's the golden lining. Trey had his bad game of the Tourney...and we won by 15. Loved the effort the freshmen showed in this game.
How many minutes did McGary play?
I feel like the entire game the announcers were saying "And Jordan Morgan, the usual starter has only played 1 minute this game!"
Obviously Horford played some.
Pitt....cause Big East is over rated. BTW, I got U-M winning the whole thing on that sheet!
What time is the game on Saturday?
Clicked on the CNN link for march madness updates. Apparently they pull tweets during the game. Laughed when. Saw the mgoblog tweet about MSU fans in SDSU gear doing the fight song.
I think GRIII hit more outside shots tonight than he did in the last 2 months combined.
We just won baby. Take a shot!
And if it's under 70 proof...take two.
(and this goes out to everyone who wasn't drinking tonight...if you're of age, take an MGoShot, screw work tomorrow).
And if its over 170 take two
Sorry if I seem confused, but I was watching at a bar with no sound on the TV... Who's that kid wearing 1? Where'd he come from? Whoever he is, I sure hope he keeps playing like he did tonight.
Ok, Trey Burke had his one off game for the tournament, now its time for him to go on a 5 game tear all the way through Atlanta. Go Blue.
Despite scoring only 6 points, Trey racked up 7 assists and facilitated the offense without really needing to put up a typical Trey Burke performance, and that was great to see. It was a great all-around effort on offense overall - Hardaway and Robinson with 21 points each, combined for a collective FG% of 90.9% between the two of them.
Overall, Michigan's effective FG% as a team was 58.0%, which is one of the best performances lately. We also capitalized on their 12 turnovers and limited the damaged from the 9 we committed.
Minor note - we were actually given a 97% probability to win that game by Massey, so in a hypothetical scenario based on his numbers, our chances to face Kansas now sit at 16.47%, as VCU being given a 63% probability to beat Akron, and the Kansas / UNC matchup is the most likely result of their respesctive games. We would be at an estimated 62% chance to win against VCU and, if it happens, 73% against Akron.
Lets go Zips
Anyone know why Morgan didn't see playing time? Great win though!
Potential reason #1: Coaches decision (see B1G tourney).
Potential reason #2: Knee is still an issue, or tweaked it. But haven't heard anything about a reinjury.
press conference on BTN right now, FYI
Really nice overall performance. Aside from Burke's cold shooting, this looked like the Michigan team of the 20-1 start. I hope Trey isn't too sore from his fall tomorrow, though.
GR3 hitting mid-range and 3 pointers, plus an active transition game in the 2nd half, made this team look like its old self. Remember how fun they can be to watch? That 2nd half was fun.
Yeah, all it took was for us to not having to keep playing the top 4 teams in the B1G and we look good again. Imagine that.
Jesus our conference is just going to roll through this tournament this year.
Does it make me a bad guy that I hope Akron players give their flu to VCU's starting lineup?
if that could happen then they would probably give it to us too.
Coach B, Trey, Tim, Mitch on the podium right now
Best game by Robison all year. Great to see him scoring besides alley oops and lay ups
Totally agree here! GR3 had one hell of a game. I expect T3 to have the game he did. Better to see Robinson hitting jump shots and looking comfortable out there...I think he was the star of the game
because it forced McGary, THJ, Stauskas, and GRIII to step up and they all did to varying degrees. I think it's big to get our offense into a place where other guys feel comfident and feel like they don't need to just stand and watch what Trey does. I honestly feel like that could make a huge impact on this team for the rest of the tournament
When Timmy is hot we are really really tough to beat. Imagine if trey had played even an average game. We will keep winning games if Tim stays wet.
Problem is that two games from now Timmy may go 2-12. He's just way too streaky.
Replace "two games" with "one game" and "may" with "will," and you've pretty much got it.
Got it done with about a 70 percent game from Trey, but great how he did not let shooting funk screw up rest of his game. 4-5 assists on wide open threes b/c defender was sagging to clog lane. Great games from rest of starters. I assume Morgan gives us more than a minute going forward, and that we've seen the worst game Trey will play in tourney. Drive on!
I can't find it on CBS...has the game time for VCU(likely) been announced?
Solid win for the team as a whole.
It seems we saw a bit of that old Beilein offense before he went all "PG dominate the ball" with Morris. I hope Burke sees, shot falling or not, he needs to get Robinson, Hardaway and/or Stauskas involved. I don't want to see him dribbling the air out of the ball, he's got too many threats on the floor to get into as many one-on-one battles as he does.
A LOT LESS WORRIED about this team now. This March is gonna be great!
I didn't play basketball, I just enjoy watching. But this means I'm not sure how Burke actually played tonight. I'm used to him scoring tons, so this looks like a bad game. But them I think the entire offense was better because of the way Burke ran it the last 30 minutes. So for those who know basketball, did Burke have a bad game in the general sense or just an off game for him (but still above average compared to other PGs)?
His shot wasn't falling which seemed to make the rest of the offense more aggressive. I don't know how much of that was self-determination on the players part to pick him up, or Burke moving the ball around better. It might have been a halftime adjustment since Beilein talked about them not getting the looks they wanted in the first half and Robinson was much more aggressive after getting a few shots to fall after the break.
Burke didn't have a "bad" game. By his standards, perhaps, but he had 7 assists to 2 TOs and operated the offense in a way to get THJ and GRIII involved heavily. Burke did an excellent job of running the offense, IMO. W don't need him to score 20+ a game because we really and truly are a loaded team, just need to get the players involved.
Michigan improves to 16-1 when Timmy scores 20 points!
Just a single loss back in his freshman year against Minnesota!
Who has the bigger eyebrows?
Hard away Jr or Craig Roh ?
I'll be honest - after the Big Ten tournament loss I wasn't feeling all that confident about the first round (though I didn't put it that tactfully). It was great to see how the rest of the guys stepped up when Burke had an off night. McGary in particular, considering this was only like, what, his third start all season?
Burke played the way most PGs don't when their shot isn't falling - he looked to distribute and get the rest of the offense going. There were a couple of drives in the 2nd half when he could have taken a contested shot but instead skipped balls to GRIII for three, which helped to stretch the lead early on. I've watched enough CBB to know that usually isn't how players respond to an 0-for-a-half, and yet Burke did it without any reservations. It's cliche, but that's real leadership; not slapping the floor on defense or screaming in the huddle.
Testament to this team that they won going away, but if I'm in that lockerroom I'm even happier that the win came with Burke not at his best. Bodes well for the next game.
Don't forget treys effort on the defensive end of the floor.
Being at this game and booing us did materialize
There were a few green turds there but they were scared stoic. Saturday will be another story. .
We get to keep playing. In any fashion, wins in this tournament are great. I do think we looked pretty good and I loved our energy tonight Stauskas, gr3, and Timmy showed up huge. Mitch stepped up, and trey wasn't as bad as his shooting. So, things should be bright ahead, But let's not get ahead of ourselves. If I see another high energy, balanced win...... Then I will burn the boats. Go Blue
Didn't read all the snowflakes, but mine is Mcgary's play. Not sure we win without him tonight. He was outstanding, especially on defense. His energy was contagious. He should start every game. He was the MVP tonight.
The guys moved/rotated well and kept SDSU from getting too many easy inside shots. Left a few guys open, but that happens.
My opinion I give Player of the Game to GR3.
He had one hell of a game and snapped out of his terrible funk. He looked great out there....tip of the cap to ya GR3.
Don't know if anyone has said it but Sports Illustrated's reason for Michigan losing to VCU in their bracket was exactly the opposite of what happened tonight. We can win without Burke.
"VCU locks down Trey Burke; teammates can't compensate"
Unfortunately Akron won't be able to give VCU much of a game.
Hopefully VCU will come in Saturday way over confident.
I feel bad for Morgan.
Why, he haven't produced since he came back from his ankle injury. So right now he is a liability in offense and defense so you cant fault the HC. He did what he had to do.
I think that ( hopefully ) was implied in the post. You feel bad for the guy bc played well before the injury and now isn't playing well and he has been replaced by a freshman (probably for good) at the most critical time of year. So completely agree with the reasons, but you still should feel bad for Morgan bc it's a tough situation to go through
I get starting McGary over Morgan. That is justifiable. But playing Horford for 15 minutes to Margan's 1? That I dont get. I have to assume Morgan is hurt/ill/being punished. If someone has already addressed this, I apologize.
He didn't play like a freshman last night, but looked like a man among boys out there with that performance. However, I noticed he started for the game. Is this the first time he's started or was it just something that happened because Morgan didn't play due to injury? IMO, I think Beilein should do this more often since McGary seems to bring more energy and hustle to the team starting vs. coming off the bench.
Last snowflake was that when Burke went out, I thought Stauskas and THJ did a good job of creating shots for themselves. I don't recall Stauskas doing this often but the move and attack he had to score showed his versatility (I'm use to him shooting lots of 3's). It showed a lot of determination for the team to step up in the brief absence of its leader when the lead was under 10. Great win Blue!
all things considered, I think it says a lot that the rest of the team stepped up when Trey was shooting worse than awful from the floor. The entire first half, McGary looked like he was born to play in the tournament, and Tim shot the lights out
