Michigan to...Nike?

Submitted by Nard Dogg on

A friend of mine just texted me that a huge "GO BLUE" Michigan sign with the Nike logo has been put over the Nike campus gym. Is a Michigan to Nike deal done?

schools will sign whoever is the highest bidder. I know some had Nike offered more money than Adidas/Under Armour.

Saying it's established that they pay less than Adidas is false. Adidas offers more money to schools with the biggest exposure so their brands would be exposed more to the country. See ND before switching to UA and Michigan after switching to Nike. Both schools are universally recognized across the country.

It is established. Michigan makes twice as much from its contract with Adidas as Ohio State does with Nike. Nike has the cool premium. Adidas has the we're-not-as-cool tax.

Michigan isn't the only athletic department with apparel deals that expire. It happens at Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, Florida State, Miami, North Carolina, Duke, LSU, Alabama, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky -- all universally recognized brands in either football or men's basketball. Adidas makes calls to those schools too. And they all have decided to stay with Nike.

Is that it's Nike saying publicly that they are interested. It could be that they really are interested or that they want Adidas/ UA to pay more. Who knows.

Don't understand why this is such a big topic. They all just make t-shirts. Just go by what the recruits like and be done. My t-shirts from 2005 look the same as my t-shirts from 2015 do.

Is this the real reason? I know that Nike started to switch to the highlighter yellow in the final year or two of their old contract. Most people blame Adidas but I don't think they were the culprit. However, if it were simply HDTV, then what explains the recent hints of going back to more of a maize color? I'm personally a fan of the traditional maize and hope that it comes back in full force no matter which vendor we end up selecting.

Summary

Don’t change the settings on your TV!

The best way to know what color has been used over the years is to put each helmet, jersey and pant next to each other and see with your own eyes what the real colors were/are – you’d be amazed at the subtleties!

I’ve been going to U-M games for over 30 years – I’ve never thought U-M had orangey-looking pants or helmets or numbers. But did I think there were subtle changes over the years? Yes, but not to the extent that I thought the color pantones had changed. Remember, U-M even posted its true color pantone numbers in the media guides years ago.

What I have noticed is that Adidas has introduced a much bolder and brighter yellow/maize to all U-M uniforms. The basketball yellows are much brighter and I think the U-M football pants and helmets have a brighter yellow to them, as well.

I think Adidas has finally gotten the yellow correct, and I for one am VERY happy that they have!

You can't trademark a fucking color. That is total shit that gets thrown around. Maybe addidas can't call the color "maize" which I don't believe either but you can't trademark an actual fucking color.

It might be only t-shirts to us, but the athletes play in the equipment. Tell a basketball players that his shoes aren't important. Same for football. I loved those Nike cleats, not because they were cool but because I loved the fit and feel. Shoes are so critical for athletes that your t-shirt comment is offensive to our players. And uniforms, of course. Not the visual aspect, but the design: weight, durability, fit, etc.

I have known about this for a couple months now. A friend of mine works at the place where they design all of that stuff. It is a sales pitch for now. But please....please..please let it happen

It is sad that the fucking fan base of my favorite team almost makes me hate my favorite team. Please get a second job or in some cases a job or a fucking hobby. These dog dick debates over clothing and jerseys is beyond tired.

Do we really have to go though this again after the Under Armour post from a few weeks ago?  Michigan is getting pitched by these schools, that's it.

Cinnamon, a gallon of milk, ghost pepper wings, and any other eating challenge.  But I'm not saying Michigan WON'T sign with Nike, all I'm saying is that these are business pitches and nothing more at this point.  I work in marketing, I go into business proposals all the time.  And I hope Nike wins.
