There is a home match against UNC this upcoming weekend, sunday at Noon. The Varsity Tennis Center is located on south State, well past Yost and the Salvation Army by the railroad tracks. It is next to the newly remodeled natatorium with a large, shared, free parking lot. Admission is free except for Big Ten tournament matches - the sites rotate every year.
There are six rows of nice, permanent folding-seat chairs about 20' above the court surface, with open-air connection between the public area and the players' area. Each court has an electronic scoreboard, and webcams broadcast all home matches on mgoblue.com. Concessions are sold and there are plenty of restrooms, drinking fountains, portraits of past teams, standings, trophies, etc. There are four or five courts per side. Although all three doubles matches are on the same side, the singles matches are split 1,3,5 and 2,4,6 between the two sides to encourage people to walk around and watch both sets of matches.
Total match time start to finish is no more than three hours. We start with three doubles matches to 6 points, and the team that wins best of 3 gets one match point. After a break, six singles games from court 1 to court 6 are played with best-of-3 sets to 6. Each singles game is worth one match point. The first team that scores 4 match points wins the match.
Sometimes the remaining games go to super-tiebreaker sets if the players are tied at one set each and the match has been decided already. In that case, a tiebreaker is played to 8 points, which is a little nutty but nothing like the no-let rule for men's college tennis. A serve that bounces off the net and lands in the service box is legal as daylight! Woe to the unfortunate gentleman that must dash forward for the desperation groundstroke.
