Michigan Swimming annihilates Notre Dame, Northwestern

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

To continue the perfect day, both top-10 ranked Michigan Swimming & Diving programs destroyed Notre Dame and Northwestern in their triangle meet at Canham Natatorium.

The #8 ranked Women clobbered Notre Dame 182-118, and beat Northwestern 199.5-100.5

They improved to 7-2 on the season including a 5-0 mark against B1G opponents.

The #6 Men's team continued with the trends in their INCREDIBLE history.

Nearly identical scores against both of their opponents, eliminating the Irish 177-117 and the Wildcats 178-114. The Men move to a perfect 8-0, 4-0 against the B1G.

Mike Bottom is the head swimming coach for BOTH Men's and Women's programs. His record as the Men's head coach is absolutely amazing, following the theme of Michigan Men's Swimming.

His overall record since taking over in 2008-09: 57-3-1. His B1G record is 36-1.......

The Men move to 41-4 all-time against Northwestern and a perfect 18-0 against the ACC.

I like today.

I'd bring back Michigan Fencing. One of two sports that Michigan dropped.

Fencing only lasted 6 seasons. Which is sad, because they had a succesful history, albeit a short one.

20-7-1 all-time record with a perfect 5-0-0 season in 1929-30 that resulted in a Western Conference championship and an Épée individual championship by Herbert Wiggers.

Here is the team photo from the final team in 1932-33 that I found in the 1933 Michiganensian when I was doing research for my SuperGuide on the program.

My son was on the travel team during his first couple of years at Michigan and had a lot of fun. It also got him into great shape. Watching a dozen teams go at it at ND was really cool. Unfortunately his Areospace Eng. major at up all his time and he had to stop competing. The team survives on a shoestring budget while several other B10 teams give scholarships.
