Michigan still recruiting Steve Elmer hard

Submitted by RollDamnTide on

Thought I'd pass this along to you guys, I saw it while browsing Maxpreps. Good luck to you guys, I love his tape, and I'd honestly not read or heard much about him. Upon further review, it looks like he committed to ND after the first night game at Michigan. Being Catholic myself (I know, a Catholic southerner) I can appreciate his position. The debate between he and Pocic is a good one, they are both very similar players. I love Elmer's strength, and his technique. That kid could come in and compete for playing time from summer camp on. I don't think Kelly's offense suits Elmer's obvious strengths, so I could see Michigan landing him.

By the way, this is one of those kids that when he says "Academics are important", where you actually believe him. While he may have gotten a plethora of other offers, I think the SEC would've stayed away. Besides Ole Miss that is, and to be honest, Ole Miss is actually a damn good school academically.

lives the next town over from my hometown. I have been heard nothing but glowing reports about this kid both on and off the field. If Michigan can make he see the light I'd love to have him, but if it is not to be, I will still wish the kid nothing but the best.

I cannot see why anyone would want to play for that asshole. I business associate of mine played Football at the University of Cincinnati, initially under Dantonio and them under Brian Kelly. He spoke very highly of Mark Dantonio but couldn't wait to graduate and get the hell away from Kelly. Wished he would have followed Dantonio to MSU (don't know if that was a realistic option for him or not, he just said that.) The point - Brian Kelly is a jerk!

There are so many negative stories about Brian Kelly, there has to be some truth to them. I heard that a certain ND player from the 'Nati (who caught a long TD pass against us a couple years ago) was unfortunately injured a couple of times during his career. His first coach, let's call him Jabba the Hut, visited him in the hospital on several occasions and called every day. I heard his second coach didn't even pick up the phone to see how he was doing. I believe there is something to this story because, while many juniors hesitated to turn pro due to the NFL labor issues, he seemed to declare quickly, as if he couldn't get out of there fast enough as well.

I'm not terribly concerned, but it would be fun to get to cheer a Midland High Chemic in a couple years, particularly because the only other D1 Chemic I know of right now is MSU's Andrew Maxwell, whom I will boo aggressively. Last player from Midland at U of M that I know of was Phil Brabbs, but he went to Dow High. I once got in a screaming match with him at a crosstown rivalry hockey game when we were both I'm high school.

That's interesting. Would be great to take a ND commit. I've heard a bunch of reasons as to why he chose ND. One was he is/was a Sparty fan and didn't want to go there but didn't want to play for Michigan because of the rivalry, which doesn't sound too logical. Another is that he's a Catholic so ND became the favorite. That must be strictly about ND being a "catholic" university, which I think has nothing to do with their football team (look at the screaming head coach). That last O-line spot won't be open for forever so he does not have that much time to choose between playing for a national contender or losing non-BCS bowl games each year.

A national contender?  Wow, I like Hoke a lot, but take the foot off the gas bro.  We'll see how you make out next year when you actually have to leave the Big House.  Besides, that team that you are referring to was killing you 24-7 before the epic defensive meltdown.

I have no inside info what so ever but I don't see Hoke flipping Elmer. Word on the street was it was ND or Sparty. If Hoke does great, if not whatevs. That's right, things are that good at Michigan right now that I just said whatevs to a 5 star tackle. Damn is it good to be back.

So would the more seasoned among this revered group fill in us less educated types:

is it fair game to pursue players who have verbally committed to OTHER schools?  Only if they're NOT of the B1G (or ND)?

Or has Brady v Urban changed all that, and now anything goes?

Because if that's the case, after this past weekend, well, I don't know if the loss of such an "understanding" would be considered helpful for us, as we are clearly ahead in the VERBAL commitment wars.

It's true that those VERBAL commits could flip at any time but I would be slightly shocked if they did. Reading what they have to say in interviews and even on their twitter pages, these kids are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to represent Michigan and are already working on bringing other guys into the fold. That is the Michigan difference.

I could care less if he is a five star. If he is in the Big House rooting against my favorite team of all time than he means nothing to me. I don't care if he is young and I hope no one makes excuses for him. I knew I deeply loved Michigan when I was a little lad and my Dad was a ND fan. There is something born in us that makes us love this team and its a gift damnit.

not all 109,901 people in the big house were born Michigan fans. I didn't start being a Michigan fan till I started going there and then obviously it grew on me. If we're only going to recruit kids who wore Michigan footie pajamas every day when they were a kid, then we're not going to be a very good football team

I overran my point by emphatically sharing my personal love for Michigan. My point was he is a grown man making grown up choices and he is rooting for Michigan to lose. I would be ignorant to think that all recruits loooove Michigan. Some recruits have never even been to the state. My point was he was IN THE BIG HOUSE and he was rooting against us. It just doesn't rub me right.

So could this all mean that we have found our center already? The way I see it is dawson or bosch must project to center. We are still recruiting Elmer hard and in our many other top tackle prospects like pocic, mcgovern, bivin, and so on..it looks to me we are trying to get a tackle more than ANYTHING and also that we havent even offered a true center yet. Or maybe kozan is going to come who knows, but something seems strange. You would at least think they would have offered cameron dillard by now. Whats everyones thoughts on that?

I have said all along that Dawson is our center! He has said that he will do anything it takes to get on the field and looking at his tape he is definitely a center or guard. The only problem would be if he got another growth spurt but he could have been done for years. I think the  coaches are going after the best available OL's now. Considering center filled.

In regards as to who is going to play center, I think alot of people are forgetting about Jack Miller. He's just going to be a soph next year (or did he RS? I really don't know) so we have plenty of time with him before we start scrambling to fill in that position. Khoury will probably be the backup (hopefully that first series in the Sugar Bowl was just nerves) and if the coaches think he can handle it they can start working on C with Dawson if they think that's the best situation for the team. I'm not worrying about the center position quite yet.

Jsck Miller will be a RS freshman in the upcoming seasonn, however depth is the big issue with the team.  Also, Miller may not be big enough even this season, since he was around 265 last year.  I haven't seen any film, but heard he's a nasty run blocker.

I get that elmer is a probable 5* stud, but isnt this the same kid that was on the michigan sideline for the under the lights ND game, and found himself rooting for ND? If you can be there for one of the more epic comebacks in college football, in an environment as electric as the big house was that night (w/ all 115,000 fans on their feet every snap) and not be inclined to at least stay indifferent, then he just doesnt seem like a good fit for us.  Not saying that every player needs to bleed blue from day one, but seems his heart is elsewhere.  Also seems like a high transfer risk/verbal committment flipflop if he did end up blue.  The coaches are doing a great job, we've already got a great class and we're not done yet.  We'll be fine w/out him.

It doesn't sound like he will end up a 5* prospect.  He's good, but not great.  He supposedly didn't fare that well at recent event.  I really like Pocic, but since he's stil considering 10 different teams, I doubt he'll be ready when the last spot is taken.
