Michigan State Vs. Wisconsin

Please be kind, it's my first thread. Who do we want to win this game? I will never cheer for Sparty, but if it's necessary, I guess I can hope they win the game. Honestly, I'm more concerned about the seating for the Big Ten Tournament. I think a good showing will propel us to a #1 seed

(Slight Mod Edit - the original title was causing minor confusion. LSA)

Wiscy

I'm rooting for Wisconsin. Don't want Sparty to have a shot at a share of the title.

Bucky...

is the mascot's name for Wisky, no?  I think the Buckeyes have Brutus.  Or Lebron James.  not sure.

I also thought he meant Buckeyes.  Although I knew Wisconsin's mascot was named Bucky Badger, that's certainly not how I think of WIsconsin.

Too many people try to be cute and make things worse.  What's so hard with saying the names of the schools?  MSU vs. Wisconsin would have been very clear.

I think it's better for us if MSU wins, as UW has a tie breaker against us.  But then again, it would be nice to see MSU out of the race for a B1G title.  So really, it doesn't matter, and I'd be happy with either result.  Provided we beat IU of course.

I agree. It's tough to watch that game and have a rooting interest. It really doesn't matter, I guess I'm just looking forward to the postseason. The IU game will be tough. Hopefully the officiating is even for a change.

Basically...

If State wins tonight then UMich beats IU, UMich is guarunteed to be a 2 or 3 seed, which is essentially the same.  If Wisconsin wins tonight and UMich wins, there is still a chance UMich would be a 4 seed.

Desperate times?  I'm not sure this qualifies.  Rooting for OSU the other night, yes.  For possible seeding in a tournament that while it would be nice to win, isn't the one we're really after?  I think we should save our desperate measures for more significant results.

Yeah I was kind of including having to root for Ohio. The whole thing just makes me feel dirty. I would rather Michigan just have won the games they should have won and been in complete control and not have to depend on these other teams.

Playing With The Table...

Granted, Massey's numbers will change depending on the outcome of this game, so this reply contains a certain amount of speculation, but in fiddling with the table I posted in the BTT Scenarios thread, you would think this game something of a wash for us (based on a table of potential scenarios provided by UMHoops). Massey puts this game up as a 74% Michigan State lean right now.

All  that would be for seeding purposes anyway - if State wins, the two most likely scenarios would have us as either a 3 or 5 seed, which oddly enough is the same result we would see if Wisconsin pulled this out. Again, the percentages will change after the game and some revision may be necessary, but given the estimates now, we seem to be closing in on the 3-5 seed range depending on everything else that goes on this weekend in the conference.

I'm rooting for the meteor.

I'm rooting for the meteor. But if I had to pick a team, I'd probably pick Sparty. Don't really care for Izzo, but I feel like his team is more deserving of a title. And I respect what he's been able to do on the court over the years. When his teams have beaten us, its usually been because they were just flat out the better team that night.

I just despise Bo Ryan and everything that is Wisconsin basketball. His damn buzzer beater antics over the last few years have a lot to do with that. His teams aren't any better than ours, but they've gotten by on blind dumb luck sometimes.

I want Wisconsin to win tonight

and then see them lose to Penn State on Sunday. Then I want to see OSU lose to Illinois. Then when UM beats IU, UM will not have to share it with our two biggest rivals and a team that was lucky to beat our boys on a prayer of a shot (and who also did not have to come to Crisler). I also want an Oompa Loompa too.

Go Blue! Beat IU!!!

And state is state. Who I hate.

There is no need to be a

There is no need to be a jerk.  I think it'd be nice for our program to finish ahead of MSU in the standings (which hasn't happened since the 1990s).  That's something that could pay off in recruiting down the road.  Meanwhile, the "benefits" of MSU winning relate only to BTT seeding.  That really doesn't matter to me.

Man, I didn't realize

Man, I didn't realize people's e-feelings would be so hurt - I wasn't that malicious, was I?

We always say that it is "typical Sparty" to cheer for UM to lose when UM winning benefits them.  It would be hypocritical to say that and then cheer for MSU to lose when them winning helps us.

Do you really think a 1 game difference in conference standings in a given year has any tangible effect on recruiting?  I don't, but I am open to hearing that argument.  Unless that one game difference is one team winning a title and another not, I think tournament outcomes are far more memorable for a recruit.

I don't know, to me a shared title is a shared title. From my team's perspective, I don't care who I share it with.

I'd rather get a 2/3 seed to avoid IU in the semifinals of the B10 tournament, thus giving us the best chance of racking up BTT wins and earning a #1 seed. I think that's far more important in this season where we have a legitimate chance to make a final four run.

Just throwing this out there....

Something I was considering at work today....if MSU loses today and has an early loss in the Big Ten tourny, I've had to think there is a decent chance they fall to the 4 seed line in the NCCA touranment, which if I understand correctly, would make them unprotected in regards to seeding location. I'd love to not have all of those MSU fans in the stands, cheering against us while they get shipped DC or LA. Looking at our home vs. road record, the less fans cheering against us the better! Any thoughts on this?

Why does every game of interest have to start at 9:00?  It's murder on us who have to wake up early.  Grrr.

What I'm hoping for is for Wisconsin to win, but Gary Harris and Adreian Payne have big games and continue to raise their NBA stock.

I'm struggling with this

I'm struggling with this game.  I know the best scenerio is for MSU to win.  If so, and we beat IU, we are in perfect position at the 2 or 3 seed.

However, if we lose to IU (bare with me, I'm just saying *if*), a Wiscy win would be better for us, still giving us that 4 seed.

But more powerful, much more powerful emotionally is that I would love to keep MSU from getting a share of *OUR* Big Ten Championship Titile.  Sure, if Wiscy and UM both win, we will likely be the 4th seed and have to play MSU plus two top teams in the BTT.  Maybe I just don't care enough about that.  I would love to see MSU lose.

Am I wrong?

I need confirmation or advice.

It would be great to see MSU lose once again and not get a share of our title.

btw, I didn't have a hard time rooting for OSU the other day.  Beating IU gave UM a much greater benefit than simply one easier game in the BTT.  And frankly, I have more hate for MSU basketball.  I keep watching this game and cheering everything bad MSU does.

Big Ten Tournament means jack shit. Why would any Michigan fan root for Sparty in this game since if they lost it would eliminate their conference title hopes.

This is just as ugly as when these teams played in Madison.  In the final minute of that game, Wisconsin missed 6 free throws to hand Sparty the win 49-47.

Amazing how Wisconsin misses half a dozen free throws against Sparty at the end of the game but they make a miracle half court shot against us.

This style of basketball is just so bad to watch. There is something to be said for good defense but this is just total lack of ball skills too. Wisconsin didn't even get to 20 points. I can't wait until Bo Ryan retires. Fucking ugly basketball.

LOL.  When teams play against

LOL.  When teams play against us they make blind, heavily contested half court shots with regularity.  When they play ANYONE else they can't hit anything no matter how open they are.

Wisconsin has missed like 15 straight three's and none of them has been close.   Against us? Everything that went up went in.  I wish I knew what it is about our uni's that lights everyone up and makes them shoot lights out but they all do.  They ALL do.

I can't watch Wisconsin.  Taking ugly jump shots, 4 straight offensive rebounds leading to no points, missing all their 3's, missing layups.  None of these things were problems for them when they faced us.  I just feel like punching something.

Some things to think over.

Some things to think over.  This year, Wisconsin beat OSU by 22 at home but lost to Purdue by 13 at home.  They beat us at home but lose to Virginia at home.  They lose at Iowa but they win at Indiana.  They win at Illinois but lose at Creighton by double digits.

They're all over the place.

Big Ten schedule rotation.  Last year we played each other once and the game was at Crisler.  Beat them by 24 that day.

Two take aways from this game: Payne's botched dunk was the worst ever, and Bruesewitz #31 for Wiscy is the ugliest player to step foot on the court since Bobby Hurley.

I hate Wisconsin basketball

It's awful to watch, they never score, they foul everyone (but never get called for it), and somehow they still win a alot.

So...

What that chart is telling me is this...

Beat Indiana - 2 or 3 seed

 - Quarterfinal vs Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, or Purdue

 - Semifinal vs Ohio (if Ohio beats Illinois) or Sparty (if Illinois beats Ohio) *most likely, barring upset*

Lose to Indiana, Penn State beats Wisconsin - 4 seed

 - Quarterfinal against Wisconsin or Penn State

 - Semifinal against Indiana

Lose to Indiana, Wisconsin beats Penn State - 5 seed

 - First Round Game against Penn State

 - Quarterfinal against Wisconsin

 - Semifinal vs Indiana

I much prefer path #1 please.

Maybe getting beat down by Purdue at home wasn't a fluke for Wisky. Maybe they are just playing that poorly right now.

that's the joke

most 3s are uncontested, otherwise they wouldn't be taken.  2-32 is just pure bad shooting.  or lucky for msu.

Everyone who is hoping

Everyone who is hoping Wisconsin wins is crazy. Understandable, I guess, given the emotions involved, but still wrong. According to the chart El Fuego posted above, with a Sparty win, the game Sunday determines Michigan's seed in the BTT:

Win, and they are a 2/3 seed, and will play MSU or OSU in the semis (assuming a win Friday against a bottom-half B1G team). Either way, get a bye Thursday and looking at a pretty easy first round game (at least as easy as B1G games can be this season). Beat MSU/OSU, and M is in the final.

Lose to Indiana, and 7/8 outcomes have M playing Wisco in the 4/5 game. It would suck to be the 5 and have to play Penn State again, but oh well. Anyway, based on how well UW has played recently, I like our chances in a rematch. Which would put us in the semis against Indiana, but it's hard to beat a team 3 times in one season.

Finally, MSU winning tonight (as I write, it's a 18 point lead with 2 min left) guarantees Indiana the 1 seed. They'll still want to win the title outright on Sunday, but with both tournament 1 seeds pretty much locked up, they might lack a little motivation. Every little bit helps.

I think you are making too

I think you are making too much of the BTT.  I would rather finish ahead of MSU in the Big Ten standings, which we haven't done since the 1990s (we've been tied with them the last two years and a couple times under Amaker, but not ahead of them in this century).  I don't really care about the BTT.  If you win, great.  If you lose, you get extra rest.  I don't see it as a huge deal.

I dunno. I see it as another

I dunno. I see it as another opportunity to get quality wins against good teams, which would help the NCAA seeding. And I like our chances against MSU or OSU instead of Indiana. At least making the BTT final could be enough to push us to the 1 line (assuming other games fall our way, of course). And that makes the road to the ultimate goal easier.

It's a moot point now, but I think you are caring about finishing ahead of MSU too much. If neither team wins the BTT, people are going to care more about who goes further in the NCAA tournament anyway.
