Over-analyze as appropriate.
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
As someone who watched it live, you're gonna love James Ross.
I was also there live, but have a dumb tendency to watch particular players on random plays, thus missing key action. "Hey, let's watch Brennan Beyer on this play and see how he does... oh, the play went to the other side. I now have no info. on anh of the other performances."
Even so, I saw Ross stick his head in and make a crack on play at least.
I hate Jon Jansens tie
Report at ESPN says Hoke said in his presser that Toussaint would be back for the opener
My question is why can't we have great turn out for a spring game?
Because it's a glorified practice played in shit weather.
Was there any game last season colder than the Spring Game today?
Regardless, it's a practice and not a game. It's not even a good practice because they are trying to avoid providing any insight into how the team actually runs in order to avoid game film. I don't really feel it reflects negatively on the Michigan faithful to fail to attend te spring game. It's cool that Alabama and the SEC teams fans show up for the games but the fact that we don't show up for a bs promotional event isnt an indictment of our fans but theirs.
if they did something special for the fans on top of the game. In 2010 they let us walk through the locker room. It seems to me that they're not stressing about the lack of a huge crowd.
but that was in Columbus. No home game was that cold.
in the past, but snow and rain in the fucking forecast keeps people home if they have to drive a ways.
Forcier's true freshman year. That's the last time I believe we had decent weather. Pretty large turnout (50K+) for that one.
That seems like a long time ago, back when we had high hopes for Forcier, Rodriguez, etc.
Largest spring game crowd in Michigan history at 50,000. The last really nice day was 2005 where Lloyd Carr caught a touchdown pass on the last play of the game. There have been some really embarassing attendance numbers like 5,500 in 2007. Since MGoBlue didn't bother to give an attendance estimate, I say there was a good 30,000.
Last year and 2011 were pretty low at 25K because people were spooked by the weather forecasts. I know better by now. Everytime, every freaking time before the spring game starts the weather suddenly gets better.
Next year SHOULD be a real game format. I hope.
I think it got colder as the day went on.
Doesn't ohio have the spring game attendance record? Fuckers. We must beat it!
I thought i saw an estimate of about 15k this year. Regardless i drove in from the chicago area and it was f'ing cold, but it was a good time.
Annarbor.com reported that number. It was pretty empty. The weather was awful. I was there.
Yeesh I am a bad estimater. I was there and the only bad weather was the temp.
Will Cam Gordon or Brennen Beyer start?
Uhhhhhh, Im here for the gangbang?
Let's go Blue!!!
Question: Is Derrick Green on campus yet or is he still in highschool?
HS. You need to up your addiction to mgoblog
He's still in high school, but he did visit about a week ago, I think.
Guy in front of me wouldn't believe me when I said he wasn't on campus yet even when I showed him the roster.
Haha, no. I wasn't at the game. I just didn't know if he enrolled early or not.
Evidence of how many fans forget that these are, you know, kids, who go to school and stuff.
He is wearing #62
Nice that we had to wait 10 minutes for Ohio spring game overflow.
It's not freakin' live, edit that crap!
MICHIGAN in this one.
How can you make a pick without knowing the spread? Rookie.
GEORGEOUS AL BORGES!
I am ready for some football! Happy!
Shave the head.
Al lol Al. You just said David Norfleet. And you knew your forgot his name before you said it.
2 Norfleets on the field AT THE SAME TIME!
But it started 13 minutes late so it'll probably run late.
I started late so it's only 9:45 on my DVR...
They did interviews for the last 20 minutes. That and starting late, they either edited out a lot or our practice was REALLY short compared to Ohio State's.
Does anyone know if Derrick Green played in the game?
Nope. He didn't even suit up.
Yes. He had four touchdowns and picked off two passes.
Well placed & well said.
Not yet on campus... Still finishing HS
Not sure if serious.
You're kidding, right?
Yeah he played. Even though he wasn't there. They ran out with ten guys and Devin handed the ball off to air. He ran right into James Ross who made an amazing tackle on the invisible Green. I'm sure it will be on Sports Center.
I thought Jeremy Clark looked decent on run support. He was someone who no one was really talking about who at least looked serviceable.
Didn't he get trucked by Rawls today? I thought he got trucked. I guess we'll see
EDIT: No that was Richardson, and trucked is too strong a word.
Would just skip the analysis and get to the game, that would be great.
Lots of matte helmets out there.
Some practice, some game, some old, some new.
I saw Kevin Koger in an M hat, doing something that resembled coaching during a drill... is this because he's an over enthuastic alumni, or is that because he's a coach?
The last thing I knew, he was coaching at Saline High School.
same here.....which is why I was like "huh??"
Sam Webb said on radio pre-game that he has been here at lease once a month working on the playbook, but, NOT an early enrollee. Still in HS.
Poor throw by Devin right into a dropping LB Desmond Morgan. Should've been picked
Jake Ryan sans flo sighting.
Hey Terry Richardon's alive
Willie Henry at SDE? Interesting
Ben Braden at guard = OMG!
I really hope Marvin Robinson realizes his potential this year...We know Wilson will be a good one, but it would be great if MR can hold him back
On a side note, the interior of the line is getting good push
Now really, that's a straight-up 3-4
Jeremy Jackson needs to catch with his hands...don't let it come to the body
I find it interesting/encouraging to see Rawls and Johnson accumulating yards.
I don't know who was blocking him, but I like how Godin held the point of attack there at SDE
That guy is something special
I was there, it was cold. Football was practiced. Go blue
Frank Clark handled Lewan to make that safety right at the beginning. The battles those two must have at practice...
Clark slanted inside. Glasgow should have picked him up, because Lewan had to pick up the looping DT. Otherwise, Lewan would have had to block two guys while Glasgow blocked air.
Dennis Norfleet just tricked Jeremy Clark
Who is Hardison?
A freshman walk-on.
Looks ok on short throws.
He seemed to know he lacked the arm strength and stuck to what he was good at. No problem with that.
Strobel didn't do very well at Nose right there.
The kick-out blocks from our FBs and TEs on the Power play have been pretty poor.
Willie Henry really beasin it up out there. I remember being really impressed with his high school film too. Hopefully he can develop into something good.
is tom strobel playing?.. i didn't see him on the field.
That Gardner floater reminds me of Trey Burke's floaters.
Wow...that outside zone run by Rawls was pretty bad defensive play by the second unit. AJ Williams did a good job blocking it, though. That's a good sign.
That was a great route Jansen, good play call and nice hands by Butt
Tyrone Wheatley is wearing a Buffalo Bills hat with red in it!
In HS a few times
Needless to say he wasted me.
Good to see he's as fat as I am now.
Joe Bolden's spring has been like this game - almost unnoticed
Ben Braden is very mobile for 315 pounds as shown by his movement downfield on that screen to Drake.
Please, someone shave off Taylor Lewan's mustache. Stat.
He said KP wants him to get rid of it.
I watched offensive line exclusively.
Kalis is our best guard, but he's got some work to do. Looks very much like a redshirt freshman.
Braden looks like Tarzan but played like Jane. He consistently stopped his feet on contact. He was slow out of his stance. He always caught the defender in pass protection rather than punching. He was absolutely undressed on one defensive line stunt. Looks pretty rough.
Magnusson isn't ready. His feet were poor. Very inconsistent pass sets, sometimes too wide, sometimes too narrow. As a run blocker, couldn't get a great read.
Bars looked the worst of any of the redshirt freshman. I think true freshman Bosch looked better, and this is more of an indictment of Bars.
Not much on Tulley-Tillman. #58 will never play for us, I'd guess.
This reads really harsh, but I suppose it should I think we're in some trouble. Man, I wish we had a few upperclassmen so these guys wouldn't have to start.
And Funchess can't block a lick.
O-line rarely looks good in spring games.
I saw Rawls and Drake Johnson at least having enough space to gain a couple yards, which is more than Fitz ever really got last season. These guys are built for this offense and will likely show huge improvement as the season goes on.
to the ledge buddy.
I'm just talking about what I saw today. They haven't even been through fall camp, so I'm not remotely near any ledge.
I don't think we suck, as one commenter said. I think our interior line is pretty poor at this juncture, which is fortunately a long time before we play anyone. Defense could be excellent, as could special teams. That alone would make us a pretty good team. Add in a heck of a QB and we could be really good.
For what it's worth, I think Kalis and Braden will end up as great players. They're just not there yet. It's not even surprising; these guys have never taken a real snap. The only guys I have zero confidence in are 58 and 62. I'd be shocked if either ever got meaningful snaps, and took them effectively.
Only real surprise is Bryant (58), I thought there were good reports on him prior to the leg injury and that he would have started last year (not that starting last year on the interior OL is a ringing endorsement).
He was only cleared to play a few weeks ago. This was his first "game" since high school, and I honestly didn't think he looked that bad.
I didn't realize he was just cleared to play recently. That would explain a bit though.
Still, I think he looked really bad. Even before team period, during the 1 on 1 drills, he looked pretty bad.
I guess the good news is that he's still got time and he has a bit of an excuse with the injury. But I still don't think he'll ever play. He's been passed up by underclassmen.
True, but he has just as much experience as them. He also is not in as good of shape as he will be. He came in way overweight, lost it all, then broke his leg. It's going to take him time. He's been out for the past year. He should steadily improve from here on out.
Thanks for your awesome analysis. It's a wonder that we got a pass off or any positive yardage on the ground.
Brian should UFR the spring game (at LEAST first unit, if not also second unit), to fill up some dead time in the summer.
Heitzman and Beyer both played more than I first realized. Also we started with Gordon at SS and Wilson at FS. On the 3rd play you see Gordon yelling at Wilson to get in position and Jarrod runs to the deep middle.
Hollowell also got extended snaps on D, not sure if they were hold Taylor out a little bit like Countess.
If the run defense scared me or the O line....but it's the spring game.
Not watching the spring game replay right now, but does anyone know the attendance?
I don't think there was more than 10 or 11k there...I only had to drive 2 miles and was dreading the cold. Good thing I had my kids to blame for being a wuss in the cold.
18,000 according to Kyle Meinke.
Funchess confirmed that he's fine...
Did countess play much? I couldn't hear in the bar. Or dymonte Thomas?
Countess didn't play. Dymonte Thomas was playing at the nickel position.
I've seen Heitzman and Godin, but not him. I may have missed him as they're now letting all the walk-ons get some love.
Wormley played at least a few plays. He didn't do much that I saw.
...but I know Countess didn't play because Hoke said in the postgame presser that he and Fitz are not participating in anything "contact"
Dymonte Thomas has been playing, hasn't caught my eye though, I've just seen him on the field at times.
Countess didn't play at all and I didn't see Thomas, but I assume he played at least a little bit.
James Ross is a beast.
Pipkins, Ross, Wilson are all getting a lot of reps.
I thought OL was pretty good today compared to what it had been last year.
Run blocking was better. Pass blocking left a little to be desired. Those young guys get confused by stunts.
To be fair to our O-Line, a lot of people seem to get fooled by Greg Mattison's stunts.
The defense was better than the offense, but you expect that this time of year. There were some running plays where $running_back had room to run, and there were some that were swallowed up in the backfield. As an offensive guy, I love watching our defense swarm to the ball.
Way too early prediction: this offense isn't going to lead the B1G in rushing, but they are going to be able to move the ball against most defense fronts that we face. Those top level teams that we face are probably going to come down to Gorgeous's gameplan and Devin's ability to win games.
We are so close, it is an extension of giddiness from bball. People need to realize we are gonna be good for a long time if we have this kind of talent who is coached and developed properly consistently.
He just needs to learn how to be more aggressive with the ball in his hands and be more active defensively.
He's a kid that I think a full offseason will do WONDERS for. I think he'll be the most improved player along with LeVert.
Agreed the kid is really good and athletic, but plays out of position in our offense. I think he would benefit from staying but I can see why scouts like him.
Good game, goodnight, go blue!
How did you guys think the d line looked? Young but talented
Willie Henry and Charlton looked pretty good. So did the older guys but that's expected.
I'm most excited about James Ross. It's been a while since we had a great linebacker, and he has all the makings of one.
too soon :(
Henry stuck out to me. Also Tom Strobel (#50?) caught my eye with some really nice bull rushes. Our #2 guys may be more talented than our #1 guys of just a few years back. Crazy depth.
Describing the touchdown by our freshman tight end....
"Butt on the receiving end....."
Both Joe Reynolds (who caught the TD pass) and Bo Dever ATE UP Terry Richardson and Dymonte Thomas on a couple of inside slant routes.
It's one play, but nice to see the walk-ons holding their own.
Dever was playing the slot behind Dileo for much of the game. Looks solid.
Last sidenote from that play, Jeremy Clark looks HUGE playing S, looks like Ernest Shazor back there (size wise).
I just re-watched the Spring Game for the 3rd time (this is my elixir for the NC loss)...I noticed that we didn't seem to be playing FS and SS. More just two safety and we shifted more depending on the offense, which side of the field the ball was on, etc.
Did you notice this or were we indeed still playing both safties with two distinct roles we were just rotating Gordon and Wilson between the two spots?
Sidenote, Gordon and Wilson seemed to play a considerable amount more than Robinson.
But the were constantly moving who was down, who was high, who was over the slot, who was over the TE, etc.
It almost seemed like the coaches aren't seperating the positions as much as some of us do.
I didn't notice that, but I also couldn't see the safeties in a lot of the shots. I did think that Gordon/Wilson seemed to be the first team safeties.
I'm guessing we would have more in attendance if we actually played a scrimmage game. Every year I keep hoping we will have more than a glorified practice
Needless to say, the real spring game is probably 1-2 years away. Once we see legit depth it will be worth putting on the show. Still tough when you have a legit starter at some positions and then a significant drop off, not necessarily in talent, but in some cases experience. You can only have a true spring game if you can afford to lose someone. I hate to think like that, but t is true. We will have one in the near future. Hoke is truly engineering a rebirth. It's been said plenty of times but unfortunately it seems as though the big ten is reverting back to its old ways. Two giants; Michigan & ohio.
Remember, we only signed 3 OL combined during 09-10. The first big OL haul for hoke is redshirt freshmen and only one of the 2013 group is here. Both will be on the field next year and barring a QB injury, we'll have a game.
2. Bosch and LTT
