Michigan Softball begins Fall practice

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Earlier today Fall practice began for the 40th team in Michigan Softball history.

Some new faces put on the Block M helmet for the first time today, and they were signed to fill the vacancies left by arguably the best senior class in Michigan history.

Let's go over those freshmen-

  • #5 Abby Skvarce, Catcher from Clarkston, MI
  • #7 Madison Uden, Middle Infielder from Glendale, AZ
  • #22 Thais Gonzalez, Outfielder from Boca Raton, FL
  • #32 Haley Hoogenraad, Outfielder from Zeeland, MI

The one most likely to see the field very early is Skvarce who is in a major position of need and question. Michigan went 52-7 last season, and in 4 of those losses our inability to throw out runners likely cost us the game.

Skvarce has been described by local softball coach and poster MGoSoftball as having a "rocket arm", something we have lacked since all-world Lauren Sweet graduated in 2015.

It's going to be a three-player race between Skvarce and sophomores Alex Sobczak and Katie Alexander. Aidan Falk started most of last season, yes. But her natural position is more 1B than C. She was likely only the starter last season because she usually didn't give up passed balls and was solid in her time stepping in for injured Sweet in her freshman season in 2015.

If Madison Uden has a familiar last name, it's because her sister Taylor is a Junior at Indiana and arguably their best player. Madison is a middle infielder and was a Top-100 recruit nationally per Flo Softball.

She was signed to succeed (NOT replace) the absolute legend Sierra Romero. Romero was pretty good at softball in case you missed it. Given Abby Ramirez has played both SS and 2B in her career, Uden could be at either position.

After mulling it over recently, I personally don't expect her to start this year. I think sophomore Faith Canfield is the favorite to start in the vacant spot in the middle at 2B. She played a little bit at 3B last year when we were beating teams up, but she will not be starting over a senior Monte.

Our other two freshmen are preferred walk ons. Thais Gonzalez and Haley Hoogenraad are both outfielders who will probably be used as pinch runners. Hoogenraad especially, as she was a track star in high school and is reportedly a burner. Don't sleep on PWOs in this program, as one that just graduated *only* rose from PWO to scholarship starter to First Team All-B1G.

There are two outfield spots up for grabs. Look for sophomore Natalie Peters to start for sure. The other OF is a bit of a mystery right now that is somewhat concerning. The only experienced true outfielder headed into Fall is Courtney Richardson. For some reason earlier I listed Amanda Vargas as an OF based on a fuzzy memory of her playing some LF in substitution last year but that was wrong. Christner sliding into CF makes sense since you generally want someone experienced at CF, leading the outfield.

Michigan lost 5th year senior and #2 pitcher Sara Driesenga, so now is the time for junior Tera Blanco to finally step up and be a starting pitcher that is under the spotlight. She was a big time recruit that was brought in to pitch, and has only seen PT in early season games or blowouts. IMO, it is the absolute KEY to this team for her to become a legit #2 pitcher. She has the tools to do it as we all saw her throw some pretty nasty Ks last year.

Life without Romero is gonna be interesting. Hopefully it's more of the same as it was prior to her arrival: World Series runs and B1G Championships.

SBW and MGoSoftball will have more in-depth previews as the season nears. I just thought I'd post a little primer since practice began today.

Here is MY projected starting lineup, pre-Fall games.

P- Megan Betsa, SR; Tera Blanco, JR; Leah Crockett, SO
C: Abby Skvarce, FR
1B: Aidan Falk, JR*
2B: Faith Canfield, SO
SS: Abby Ramirez, SR
3B: Lindsey Montemarano, SR
OF: Natalie Peters, SO
CF: Kelly Christner, SR
OF: Courtney Richardson, SO
DP: Tera Blanco, JR*

*When Betsa/Crockett are starting, I expect Blanco to be at 1B and Falk to be at DP. Tera was only an All-American there.

Michigan has fall games where we'll find out more about the lineup and just what this team looks like without the Sierras.

Michigan will head up to Traverse City for the annual tournament later this month.

I knew you were going to compare the two. I just knew it.

Like I said, appreciate the write up...fall ball is nothing compared to spring practice and the spring game, but that's not the point. The point is we lost a ton of faces people knew from last year's team and here's a preview of the new team. No shade when it comes to that.

It's hard to imagine that line up without Lawrence and Romero in it. This should be an interesting year. It will probably have to be a very balanced attack with great defense and pretty darn good pitching. Probably will not be as many run rule games.

Yeah, I had to add that note to the asterisk on Falk.

We may have two USA POY contenders on this pitching staff. If Blanco can get it going like she did in travel and HS in the circle AND at bat, she'd be like a Lauren Hager.

And Betsa is Betsa. Ace.

Very different vibe coming into this season compared to last.  A year ago, we really just had one big question mark: who steps in at catcher?  That was a sore spot, but Falk gave us stability at least.  This year, there are loads of questions: catcher again, #2 pitcher, shape of the outfield & infield defensively, and where the production will come from in the bottom half of the line-up.

Make no mistake, this team is going to win a lot of games and at least contend for, if not win, the Big Ten.  Betsa in the circle, and Blanco, Christner, Falk, and Ramirez at the dish alone are enough to get us to that level.  The difference between a good season and a great season, though, will be depth.

A huge part of what made us great the last 2 years (esp. 2015) was having 2 elite pitchers and zero gaps in the hitting line-up.  We've got 1 elite pitcher for sure, but it's anyone's guess whether we'll have a second one or not.  Meanwhile at the plate, we've got a great top-4 or 5 in the order (I expect Ramirez to move to the lead-off spot), but we'll need to hit on a lot of developmental projects in order to go 9 deep like we have of late.  My bet is that a few players break through - Panda Vargas, Faith Canfield, and Alex Sobczak have all shown flashes, Monte is always at least solid, and then there are the freshmen - but there may be a couple weak spots in there even so.

All of that said, I'm still excited to see this team in action.  It's a new era, a changing of the guard in some major ways.  That presents a challenge, but also a huge opportunity for a new generation to put their own unique stamp on the program's history.  You can bet they've been chomping at the bit to get that chance!

Also, I have still not fully accepted the fact that Romo is really gone.  She defined Michigan softball in so many ways over the last few years, it is tough to imagine the team without her.  That's the nature of college sports, though.  Everyone comes & goes.  Just glad we had her for 4 full, fairly healthy years.  What a gift.

Unfortunately, this is the year our streak of consecutive B1G titles will likely be snapped. Losing the two Sierras at the top of the lineup is irreplaceable, in addition to all the senior leadership. Betsa is a fine pitcher, but we saw that she can't go it alone, a la Jennie Ritter, and the pitching behind her just isn't up to par. I hope I'm wrong, but this looks like a rebuilding year more than a reloading year.

Blanco is extremely talented in the circle. Her problem has been nagging pitching-related injuries, and there was no reason to push through that with Betsa / Wagner / Driesenga available and considering how well she was playing 1B. If she and Betsa are able to remain healthy, Michigan is still the clear favorite to win the conference.

You may well be right, and I hope that you are, of course.  A senior Sara Groenewegen at Minnesota makes me nervous, though (admittedly I have yet to study the rest of their roster much - I definitely plan to look that over when I do my season preview in a few months).  They've bitten us in the B10 tournament twice in the last 3 years, and you know they want to take home the regular season crown before their star graduates,  Could end up coming down to which team gets the more favorable schedule if both are operating at a high level.  In recent years that's favored us given the way the conference tends to break down regionally - we'll see about 2017.

Minny will be good for sure. I know they were able to snag Tori Finucane from Mizzou in the offseason transfer market. She's the pitcher with the mask we played in the super regional and former winner of SEC freshman of the year. So they now have another top quality pitcher that will be capable of shutting down many Big Ten teams.

I still think that top to bottom there is nobody in the conference that can match the talent and coaching ability that Michigan has. Not to say it's a sure thing, but we didn't just stumble into winning so many seasons in a row.

That take is hot.

We play a light conference schedule again this year, and return 6/9 starters.

Blanco has what it takes to be a great pitcher. And we haven't even seen Crockett yet.

All I hear is "how are we gonna replace this" and then it takes of itself. We won it by 3 games in 2012 with two freshmen pitchers.

I'm not sure why Thais Gonzales is listed as an OF on the roster since she was a top defensive 2nd baseman in HS. I also think Taylor Swearingen could be an a breakout player who hit a lot of HRs her freshman her freshman yearl but got off to a slow start last year and never got a chance after that.

I agree that our success this year (and next year for that matter) rests on the arm of Blanco. I think we really need major development of Crockett as a P since we badly lack depth at there HR production will drop dramatically.  Christner, Blanco and a few others could step up the HR production but nothing certain there.

Thais Gonzales is probably getting reps in the OF because of our logjam of depth at middle infield - Ramirez, Canfield, Vargas, Uden all ahead of her. Meanwhile, after Christner, there are a whole lot of questions marks in the outfield, so she provides some much neede depth. Swearingen hit a lot of homers as a freshman, but she also struck out a lot. She needs to get more consistent and hit for better average while cleaning up some fielding issues. I think she'll end up spelling Monte at 3B and Falk/Blanco at 1B, but likely not much else.

Another important fact to look at is conference schedule, which is based on the East-West football divisions.

Michigan's crossover opponents have been:

2015: Minnesota, Iowa
2016: Nebraska Northwestern

Which means they will get two of Wisconsin/Illinois/Purdue, which should make for an easier conference slate than last year.

Will be interesting to see if Crockett can contribute significant innings for the pitching staff.  Also, Sobczak was earning praise and accolades for her play early last season, so I would not write her out of the lineup yet.  (also I recall this board raving about Sobczak coming out of high school. and how she was going to be an impact player).
