Michigan Soccer Scores Sick Goal; Beats Buckeyes
SIAP but I didn't see this show up on the board recently. Michigan soccer beat OSU on Sunday 1-0 on an awesome goal by our own James Murphy. I am 100% naive to all things college soccer but this is a nice goal. OSU is apparently bad but who cares. Embed below

You should try indoor soccer. The arena is much smaller, walls prevent the ball from going out of bounds all the time, and the pace is much faster. All the things about arena football that are supposed to better (but are not) are actually excellent in indoor soccer.

Yep, I played in my first "competitive" league last year in an indoor league. The facility had an A and B league, with the B league being more for guys just looking for exercise and a good time. Every game was close and even though I'm not a good soccer player, you could still get by if you were athletic and coordinated. Hockey style subbing makes it nice too - run around and sprint for a minute or two and sub out. Did break my arm, but that was a freak accident.

Team became varsity in 2000. Before that it was a very successful club sport.

Don't watch soccer at all except for the few clips that make it on SC Top 10, and this definitely belongs up there as one of them. Crazy goal.

huge soccer fan here... I can't stress enough what an amazing goal this is. Most years this would be the goal of the year in MLS (which is a pretty solid league for those of you who don't know) and one of the best few goals in the EPL (English Premier League). And seeing as the keeper was miles away from even being able to attempt to save this, I think it's extremely likely that even most EPL keepers would not have been able to keep this out.. Amazing goal, congrats to the guy who scored it!!!! I actually just saw the video posted on a US soccer facebook page 5 minutes ago and was gonna post it here if it hadn't been posted yet.
Anyone know anything else about this guy or the team in general? I haven't really followed Michigan soccer since I graduated from UM in 2010. Wow, just an incredible world class goal though.

I will admit to not being the biggest of soccer fans (although I do watch the occasional game), but that was pretty awesome in any context and even moreso because it meant the Buckeyes went down in defeat at something. I think we can safely say that, in all sports and whenever possible, "beat Ohio".

That was one beautiful goal; a full volley from that far, with the keeper in the right position to make a play. The problem was it was too great a shot to be stopped. More beautiful considering their opposition. If I were James Murphy, I'd get one of the those video picture frames, hang it on the wall in the front entry,and have it running this loop 24/7 for all to see.

I like watching soccer except for two things that drive me absolutely nuts:
1. The goal celebrations that make me believe the goal scorer has just cured cancer, ended world hunger, solved the middle east conflict, won the lottery and banged Kate Upton. All at the same time.
2. The "injuries" that really arent injuries but in order to sell them the player imitates someone being hit by a train and what that must look and feel like. I wish soccer had a pink card or something they could give to players faking injuries that made them sit out the rest of the game cause they were obviously hurt so, so badly it wouldnt be HUMANE to have then re-enter the game.

playing soccer and still do play, however, it is not my favorite sport to watch on tv (highly recommend catching a game live. I went to a game in Stuttgart, and it was easily one of the best sporting events I ever went too).
In regards to the injury fake out, I agree it is something that really hurts the sport, however, there are major differences in the amount of times this happens between. You won't see a lot of this in BIG soccer, or in the US and certain European leagues. However, stay far away from the South American teams and Italian teams, as I see this a lot with them.

Not worthy of its own forum posting -- but this Friday night at 9:15pm ET (ESPNews, I think) will be Game of the Year in CONCACAF -- Panama at Mexico. If Mexico loses, they are about 99% likely to NOT GO TO THE WORLD CUP. Talk about total meltdown. Even a Mexico win doesn't put them out of danger -- all they really can hope for is the two-game playoff v New Zealand. And if its a draw, Mexico and Panama will be scoreboard-watching in their last games this weekend (both against disinterested Costa Rican and US teams).
Panama tied Mexico 0-0 at their earlier Hex game in Panama City, then of course twice beat Mexico "dos-a-uno" in games in the US. So Panama will have more than enough confidence going into the game.
If you're the US team -- and Panama only needs a result against the US in the last game, to knock Mexico out of the World Cup entirely, when we've already qualified -- do you basically deploy 11 realty young guys who've never really played internationally before, to give them some flavor of the game. Or sprinkle in some retired veterans just for fun. That would be so "screw you" against El Tri. ("Hey Mexico, I know you need us to beat Panama for you, and we're sending out Tony Meola as our keeper... He's really fresh, he hasn't played a competitive professional soccer game for 12 years...")
