Wow great find on the video!
Thank you very much!
Wow great find on the video!
Thank you very much!
Great find is right.
If you watch the video, I highly, highly recommend muting it. Unless you like ridiculously stereotypcial-sounding Southern drawls.
Plus, if he were a good announcer in the South he'd be doing football.
Also, at least for me, the sound is about 2-3 seconds ahead of the play, so it makes the video just a little predictable. :)
They need to figure out who is doing the play by play and who is doing the color. To much talking over each other.
like a less racist version of Kenny Powers mixed with the Boom Goes The Dynamite Guy.
Michigan moving the ball real well up the left side so far.
Meram has been wide open down the left touchline a couple times, leading to a Soony Saad shot that just was touched wide. Michigan has the better run of play so far.
In the early moments, Michigan is dominating. SC has had nothing but a few hopeful long balls down the sidelines.
ARRRGH PUT THE BREAKAWAY IN THE NET!
Soony Saad just got behind the defense 1-on-1 with the keeper, but got stoned. 4 solid shots on goal already.
Not getting anything but a black screen - do you need to register or something?
Just came up for me, no registration or anything.
Michigan shot stopped by the keeper, quick counter attack almost beats U-M at the other end.
Go Blue! The sound being ahead of the video is pretty annoying but what can you do.
I want to be able to hear it because I don't know who any of the players are, doesn't exactly solve that problem..
SC defense having a lot of trouble with M forwards.
SC defense is clearly scared shitless, they are sagging back way too much.
Sigh, the finishing, it's not clinical.
....and poked away by the keeper.
SC puts one about a foot over the crossbar.
He's been taken down a few times without a call, and he's getting pissed.
Meram down after a retaliation by SC to an M foul. Trainers out giving him attention.
What exactly did the SC player do? I wasn't paying total attention so it looked like he just pulled up and hit Meram. And then only got a yellow for it? What? Did I miss something?
Didn't see it myself, mfan in ohio says the SC player punched Meram, in which case he was awfully lucky not to get sent off.
Meram slide-tackled the SC player (Cates), who I think went down on top of Meram. As Meram tried to get up quickly, it looked like Cates punched him or shoved him down hard. Cates' back was to the camera, which appears to be filming the game from outer space, so it's hard to see exactly what happened. The MGoBlue liveblog also thought it was a punch, FWIW.
Meram was called for a sliding foul, then got punched while he was on the ground. SC player gets a yellow, which is fortunate for him. Meram walking off slowly.
Dodged another bullet. SC fighting back after we controlled the early going.
Free kick into the box, SC gets off a shot about 12 yards out, touched just outside the near post. Whew.
M drove the play early, but SC was the better team for the last 10-15 minutes. Should be an exciting second half.
Only in the South do announcers say things like "we're off like a herd of turtles." Guh.
"We're off like a herd of turtles" to start the second half. Wow, is he a stereotype.
Flag goes up. Through ball into the channel between the defenders was played about half a second late.
Hamoody Saad had a volley from the corner of the 6 yard box that the keeper managed to get in front of. M looks good so far.
Just have one forward up top when the ball is in their defensive half, trying to spring him on long balls.
Another SC shot goes off the post. Up & down action, seems like SC is getting the better by a small margin at the moment. We'd best get a goal soon if things keep going like this.
Ball was in a crowd of players and just floated slowly toward the post, bounced back to the center of the 6, where it was cleared by a defender.
Why aren't they faster than us? I guess SEC speed only works on the football field.
Two SC players went for a header. One lost.
Great transition by M, Meram tried to pick out the near post upper 90 from the top of the 18.
After a corner, M keeps the ball in the offensive third, works it across the field to Meram on the right side who beats the keeper far post on the ground. Great shot.
Michigan now up a goal and up a man!
Meram puts the Blue up 1-0 with a nice shot from inside the box. Huge, huge goal in a game that has been back and forth. And now a straight red card to an SC player - announcers are not happy about it at all.
Huge. Didn't seem that bad.
KInd of a weak red imo.
11-10 man advantage for Michigan the rest of the game
What garnered the red for SC, didn't see it?
Gotta get pressing and searching for the 2nd here.
Meram will sit after being the victim of a hard foul for the 2nd time today, Matt Schmitt in to replace him.
I'll give these announcers credit - they're SC homers & Southern stereotypes, but they just devoted a good minute to talking about how we're the best attacking team they've seen all year and a joy to watch.
for those who are reading this thread as a substitute for the game and haven't gotten to the end of the thread, the announcers just complimented them for coming into the SC roost and wished them well against Penn State or Maryland.
South Carolina will bring everything they have left here in the final 20 minutes to save their season...Michigan has to play solid defense
Yep, but we can't neglect the attack either - a second goal up a man would pretty much end it. I'm looking for Soony Saad to seal the deal in the waning minutes. :)
"5 of the last 16 teams in the tournament are from the Big Ten. Dad gum"
So who is next?
Faces the Winner of Penn State/Maryland
Thank you, sir.
Winner of Penn St and Maryland. Probably Maryland since they are the 2 seed.
I tuned in just to see the kickoff after the second goal. Dadgum.
When is the elite 8 game?
TBA Dec 3-5
@Maryland or vs Penn State in A2
are the dates of the Quarterfinals....no specific times have been announced.
The quarterfinal time is Home team choice--Friday evening, Saturday or Sunday. It will probably be announced by noon on Monday.
Game date isn't set yet but it takes place sometime between December 3 and December 5 against the winner of the Penn State-Maryland match. Maryland is the number 2 overall seed.
Diving in the box. Hard to tell if that was the right call from this camera angle. Also hard to see how SC comes back down 2-0.
Soony Saad comes off after getting a yellow for a dive in the box. Good day for him, though, with a goal and several good opportunities.
Does a red card = miss the next match in college?
is opening up rushes for Michigan...they will have a lot of counter attack opportunities the rest fo the game...
Just by the outside post. Damn, almost 3-0.
Assuming Michigan holds on and Maryland beats PSU, does anyone know when the quarterfinal match will be played.
Specific matches have not been announced yet
Nothing official, but the NCAA handbook says--
Friday between 6 and 7:30 pm, Saturday between noon and 7:30 pm, or Sunday between noon and 1 pm.
Michigan has a home basketball game at 1:00 Saturday, so they probably would avoid a Saturday afternoon game. I think Michigan would also want to avoid a night game in December. If I had to guess, if Michigan hosts Penn State it will be Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Did y'all know Michigan State beat Maryland earlier this year
Maybe not? I have the sound off.
Offsides still 2-0
ELITE 8 HERE WE COME
Meram with the DAGGER
Meram again. 3-0 Michigan with under 10 minutes to play. Elite 8 here we come.
Meram with the third goal! Thought he had subbed out, but I guess I misheard the announcers. In any case, we're through to the elite 8 for sure now! The greatest season in the young history of Michigan soccer will continue for another day!
He was subbed off because of an injury so he's allowed to come back on in the same half.
Have the sound off. What is going on? Bookings?
That was a dirty elbow to the head by SC. How it was only a yellow card I have no idea. Need to get out of this game w/ no injuries and no more cards...
no six minute magic plzkthx
Goal SC, makes it 3-1. 6:45 to go in the match. No need to get sloppy here, boys!
6:45 left. 3-1 Michigan.
Just hoping for no injuries or cards now.
As good as we are we have a bunch of prima donnas on our team. It makes me sick really. Just play.
Welcome to soccer. After watching alot of soccer recently (Got into the WC, watched alot of EPL recently, and now Michigan quite a bit), its just part of the gamesmanship. Just like there is an unnecessary amount of celebrating after nearly every play in football.
That's like saying "As good as our football team is, they're all so aggresive". It's just a trait of good soccer players. This is from a former soccer player.
Hope Penn St can pull it out against Maryland. Would love to go to the Elite 8 game.
Did the video go out for anyone else? I've just got the liveblog & this thread now for the final moments.
Conked out for me as well.
Just got it back.
It went out for me a few minutes ago
yes but back up now
Any of you guys ever have a Prof. Andy Markovits from the German department? I just saw him posting on the Mgoblue.com liveblog!
Is he still there? I had him his first year teaching at Michigan for the Sports and Society class and the class was pretty meh.
Yep, he's still around. Never had him myself, but he gave a few good talks at the German House when I lived there. Sorry his full class wasn't as good. :(
Michigan is through to the Elite 8!
in the NCAA tournament?
Pretty sure it is. Just our third trip to the Sweet 16 ever - since the program only went D-I/varsity ten years ago.
Edit: I stand corrected (see below)
The 2003 team set the bar by making the Elite 8. Men's soccer became a varsity sport at Michigan only 11 years ago. This ties the furthest that our soccer team has ever advanced.
Way to go Blue, on to the Elite 8. Here's hoping the other four Big Ten teams can also keep it going, so we can host Penn State next weekend.
Thanks for the link - it was great.!
we rule at football!
(Can Denard play forward?)
Big Ten champs & a trip to the elite 8! What a season for the young program, and we're not done yet!
Really wish I could watch the Akron-Indiana match right now...
Anybody have a final from the other game in Michigan's bracket?
It's in progress. 18 minutes to go in the first half, tied at 0. Live video also at ncaa.com/allaccess
Maryland-PSU still scoreless with just over ten minutes ot play in regulation
MSU lost to UNC in PKs 1-1(4-5) after giving up the tying goal in the 90th minute.
Akron took down Indiana 2-1.
OSU and Lousiville set to kickoff in a few minutes.
It was just a matter of time. It seems like the whole second half has been played on the Penn State side of the field. Shots are 21-10 Maryland as well.
SBI says game time for the next round will be Saturday, 1pm Eastern, at College Park
It turns out that Michigan was the only visiting team to win today. Quarterfinal pairings--
#8 UCLA at #1 Louisville, 7:00 pm Saturday
#5 Southern Methodist at #4 North Carolina, 7:00 pm Friday
#6 California at #3 Akron, 4:00 pm Saturday
#10 Michigan at #2 Maryland, 1:00 pm Saturday
Maryland has won 15 straight games, outscoring its opponents 41-4 in the process. They have not allowed a goal in their last 431 minutes of play--more than 4 and a half games.
Well, hopefully we can upset them. I'd have to think that we'll be one of the best offensive teams they'll have played this year. Hopefully Meram and the Saad brothers can keep up the good work.
I agree. Also, if you compare results against common opponents, things don't look bad at all--
vs Penn State--Maryland won 1-0 at home; Michigan won 2-1 at home and 4-1 on the road.
vs Michigan State--Maryland lost 4-3 at home; Michigan won 3-2 at home and 2-1 at a neutral site.
