Michigan section at BU Game

Submitted by MaizeNBlueInDC on

I am going to be in Boston this weekend and am planning to go to watch Michigan take on BU on Saturday night.  Does anyone know if there is a section (informal or not) where there may be a concentration of Michigan fans?  I haven't ever been to their hockey arena and would like to be around some other Michigan supporters.

At my school and my church group is all state fan, always get a hard time from them because Michigan is doing bad! I always stick up for my Wolverines though, at high times and low times! We will win saturday and we will get the last laugh! Like Mitch Mcgary would say ''Win The Game" Go Blue!

Agganis is great! Really big, modern concourse, can get really loud.

Hopefully there is some info about a Michigan section here as I'm trying to go also.

As for nearby bars, there's a very Ashley's like bar nearby called Sunset Bar and Grill (on Brighton Ave past Packard's Corner) with a huge selection of local beers on tap. Don't confuse it for Sunset cantina, which is closer to Agganis but is a margarita bar or something.

Don't know whether there's going to be a designated Michigan section at the game; but Agganis is a pretty nice college arena.  Seats are cushioned and they're pretty good all around the arena. It might not have the aura it had when it opened in January 2005, and I've heard that BU fans have become more subdued since their miracle season of 2008-09.

From the few times I've seen games there, fans seem to be a bit more cordial to the visiting team's fans (Boston College fans excepted) than we might see for visiting team fans at Yost.

Boston University is coming off one of their worst seasons in 50 years, but they've got a freshman, Jack Eichel, who was living in Ann Arbor last season as a member of the U. S. U-18 National Development Team and who's projected to be a top draft choice in the 2015 NHL Draft.

I remember when they were playing up the opening of Agganis Arena as if it were going to give BU a recruiting advantage.  It didn't quite work out that way for them, but ten years seems to have gone by pretty quickly since that opening night for Agganis.

I'm heading out there in about 2 hours actually.  My sister bought tickets through the UM Alumni Association in Boston, so I'm assuming that will be the M section.  Will let you know once I found out what section it is.

1. I'm not sure what the Michigan section is as I didn't get my tickets through UMCGB. I will be in section 102. The UMCGB bars in Boston are McGreevy's on Boylston Street and Tavern in the Square in Porter Square in Cambridge. Neither of these are particularly good to go to before this game, unless you want to leave the watch early or arrive to the game late. McGreevy's is on the Green Line which will take you right up to Agganis. Take the B (there are four branches of the Green Line) and stop at the Pleasant Street stop. That's if you want to watch the football game at the alumni bars.

2. Sunset Tap and Grill is probably the best bar in the area. It's a ten or so minute walk. There are plenty of other bars around too, but they'll vary in quality.

3. Agganis is pretty nice. It's pretty cushy. It seems to have been designed less for hockey than for other events like concerts and shows. When I was a kid, I went to Walter Brown, their old arena and that was a little band box similar to, but smaller than Yost. The new rink is way too big for every game besides BC. You'll notice that when you're there because there'll be some empty seats and it will be quieter.

Environment-wise, I think it's been better this year. I've already gone to two games, both of which were exhibitions, and I think that there is a lot more excitement and energy, especially from the student section. I'd call this the Eichel effect. The kid is really really really good.

4. They sell beer at Agganis.

McGreevy’s at 911 Boylston Street (considered to be America’s first sports bar, located not far from the Boston Marathon finish line and the place where the Dropkick Murphys filmed some of the video for Going Out In Style) would be a great place to visit.  However, if you’re planning to watch the football game there with other Michigan fans, because the football game starts at 3:30 and the hockey game starts at 7:00, keep in mind that you can’t always rely on the timeliness of the Green Line of the famous M.T.A., Boston cabs cost about $10 for the trip and it’s about a 30 to 40 minute walk from McGreevy’s to Agganis Arena at 925 Commonwealth Avenue.

One of the other things to consider doing in Boston on Saturday, especially if you’re a sports fan and you’d like to be a little closer to Agganis Arena before you head to the hockey game, there are 60-minute tours of Fenway Park that start at 9:00 AM and run until 5:00 PM.

Across the street from Fenway Park’s Green Monster is Cask’n Flagon where there are lots of TV screens available if you’re considering watching the football game and having a meal before you head up to Agganis Arena. It’s about a 20-25 minute walk from there to Agganis Arena.

Though it’s closer to Agganis Arena, has an interesting history and the beers might be cheaper (because it’s cash only), The Dugout on Commonwealth is the BU hockey bar and you probably won’t be able to watch the football game there.

For those interested in checking up on the BU hockey team, I've found a couple of blogs dedicated to their team:

The Boston Hockey Blog looks like it's run by their student newspaper.

The Terrier Hockey Fan Blog seems to be more like a collection of links to stories about BU hockey and some YouTube videos; but there's an interesting sidebar with links to information about their recruits, two of whom (Jordan Greenway and Charlie McAvoy) are in Ann Arbor this season with the U. S. U-18 National Development Team, plua a fairly comprehensive list of links to college hockey websites for those of us who are dedicated followers of some of those "non-revenue sports."
