Michigan SB wins home opener

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Univeristy of Michigan softball team won its home opener today against Bowling Green University Falcons (4-2).  The win  puts our record at 32-2.  Michigan had 10 hits and committed 1 error.

It was 40°F with a wind chill factor of 36°F.  The Humidity was 36% and the UV index was rated a 1.  The wind was 6mph From the N.  The sun peaked through several times during the game.

Michigan was led by Ashley Lane who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored via a HR.  Today's HR gives Ashley 11 HRs which ties for for the team lead with Dorian Shaw.  The 2 RBIs give her 41 which leads the team.  Ashely's HR came in the bottom of the 5th inning that was estimated to be 300 feet.  It was a monster blast.

Amanda Chidester went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI.  Lindsay Doyle went 2 for 3 as well, with 1 RBI.

Stephanie Speierman was in the circle today to improve her record to 15-0.  She gave up 1 ER on 3 hits with 6 Ks and 6 BB.  She also gave up 1 home run.  Jordan Taylor came in relief in the top of the 7th inning, striking out 2, for the save.

Stephanie sturggled today against a very bad Bowling Green team.  BGU has only 4 wins on the year.  Stephanie's BB to K ratio is too high.  A good pitcher should be about 1:2 and a great pitcher 1:3.  Hutch is giving Stephanie gametime because once we get into the meat of the conference schedule, her playing time could be reduced.

We host Indiana this Saturday and Sunday, both games start at 2pm.  The weather is forecasted to be in the 40s with a slight chance of rain.

Do you go to the games or just follow via a friend? If you went,  it'd be legit if you could compile youtube highlights for each of these... reading stats for softball/baseball always bores me, watching someone hit the ball out of the park is far more entertaining.

I like seeing these updates and seeing how good they are doing. Question though, what got you so into Michigan Softball, if you don't mind my asking?

I have been a softball coach for over 15 years in SE Michigan.  I was a HS coach, I coached a D1 Club team (not Michigan) for a few years, and an 18 and over fastpitch team.   I currently coach a youth travel team.  I have 2 daughter's and I know that girls sports do not get the attention that boys sports do, so I decided to devote my life to softball and helping girls.

I have always been interested in Michigan softball when a former HS friend was a starting pitcher for M many years ago. Also, I was just recently accepted into Rackham this year so I will be on campus a lot this summer so I will try to work that around softball games.

A few months ago, someone on Mgoblog asked me for some insight from a coaches perspective.  So I started blogging and it just grew from there.  Most people do not understand softball and that it is much different than baseball.  Many people on MgoBlog have a real interest in M softball, although there is a small minority that only care about FB and BB and some hockey.

So I want to offer up an alternative to the revenue sports.  There are others Blue Dragon, South Bend Wolverine and OMG Shirtless that have contributed to this discussions and offer value.

are a Blue Devil.  I coached against Michelle.  She was one hell of a short stop, all-area IIRC. I thnk she played for Foster Oil in summer ball too.  The Blues were hard to beat.

Richmond softball has gone down hill the past few years, while St Clair has really improved.  Keri Sedden pitched for SC and is now a senior at Central.  She is having a great year.

I was in Richmond just the other day.  A lot of things have changed over the years.

Here's to another NC!

On a side note, my hands hurt just thinking about what it feels like getting jammed when there's a 36 windchill.

Thanks for the update, Forgot to post this over the weekend, but sweeping what will most likely be the #2 team in the conference on the road this past weekend was a great start to B1G play.  Good to see the team adjusting back tothe cooler temps.

Hutch is great. I come from long line of M grads. We had one who got away, my niece.Though she bleeds green, we all love her, despite her green leanings. Grandpa looks down and is proud, as are we all are.
