Michigan safety Vladimir Emilien gives insight into team... (Warning... FREEP article.)

Submitted by Firstbase on
Okay... I know it's a FREEP article, but it was kind of interesting. Sorry about the journalistic faux pas of searching their site. I didn't see this posted previously (after searching), so sorry if this info is a repeat: Michigan safety Vladimir Emilien, who played five games as a freshman last season 2009, apparently took questions from the public in a chat format today. Among the highlights: • Asked whether a lingering injury limited his playing time last season, he wrote: “to be honest i dont know why i wasnt playing... my coach told me he felt i wasnt ready yet.” • Emilien expects center David Molk and tailback Vincent Smith, who suffered ACL tears, to be ready for the season. • He believes QB Denard (Shoelace) Robinson is faster than DB Troy Woolfolk. • He thinks most of U-M players have bought into coach Rich Rodriguez’s vision for the program. • Charles Woodson is his favorite Wolverine, Molk is the strongest player on the team, in his opinion, and the most difficult receivers to cover on the team are Darryl (DC) Stonum, Martavious Odoms, Roy Roundtree, Jeremy Gallon, Junior Hemingway and Cameron Gordon. • Asked about the team exceeding NCAA limits for workout hours, as alleged in a Free Press report citing claims by current and former players: “hell naw we didn’t.” • On the upcoming season: “i feel we are going to go far this year i mean there were a couple of key parts missing last year and we fell that we have filled the void... and as far as i... im going to start and going to be the bestt that i can be.” • A reason to be optimistic about the defense: “we are fast and aggressive this year and now we know the system." • Whom he models his game after: “sean taylor and ed reed.” • The team’s biggest trash talker: QB Tate Forcier. • The new leaders: “troy woolfolk and obi and jonas,” referring to linebackers Obi Ezeh and Jonas Mouton. • He said his knee is 100% healthy and he benches 360 pounds. • He said he predicts U-M will finish 12-0 because the Rose Bowl is their goal. Notebook: Rivals.com college football expert Tom Dienhart reported on his Twitter account that David Blackwell, the former defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at South Florida, is the “hot name” to fill Michigan’s vacancy as linebackers coach. Former U-M linebackers coach Jay Hopson left Dec. 23 to become Memphis’ defensive coordinator.

It's great that Cameron Gordon is difficult to cover, but if we have so many receivers with that quality, wouldn't you rather see him at linebacker? Additionally, couldn't that answer be a hint as to why he's not playing? I know that he's probably trying to be complimentary to his teammates, but if he can't cover, maybe it's best he sits a little bit.

....Tate Forcier. I like this a lot. There are two positions that require supreme confidence: QB and HC. If a QB isn't a little bit cocky, the likelihood of his teammates fully appreciating his leadership is usually somewhat compromised. Now, I want to see him remain healthy for an entire season.

Snyder got it from the tweet that I put out about this earlier. I had a talk with both Brandin Hawthorne and Vlad awhile back, about Mark Snyder following them on Twitter. I just thought I would make them aware of the fact that he was following them, and left their decision up to them what to do with it. They both blocked him.

I regret not asking Vlad the question, "What's your take on the rumor that Mark Snyder has a 1-inch penis?" Luckily, he did answer my question of, "Where the hoes at?" though........

• Asked about the team exceeding NCAA limits for workout hours, as alleged in a Free Press report citing claims by current and former players: “hell naw we didn’t.” Can't wait to see Vlad get some serious PT next year. Great interview, and great post, OP.

CB: Justin Turner CB: Cullen Christian (but wouldn't be surprised if this is Courtney Avery) SS: Troy Woolfolk FS: Vlad Emilien Am I not giving JT Floyd enough credit? Probably. He probably has as good a chance as anyone to start. Am I giving the incoming freshman safeties too little credit? Probably not. Safety is a more difficult position for a true frosh to pick up. TW should move back there, and Vlad now has a whole season under his belt. He will be ahead of the true frosh both physically and mentally. Remember, he was a pretty solid recruit a year ago as well.

Although I agree that having two freshman CB's isn't ideal, I'd rather have them at CB than at S, and Turner has about as much experience as Vlad so that's an essential wash. Woolfolk's skill and experience are more beneficial to us at safety, and if he stays at CB, who else plays at safety? I can almost promise you that you'd rather have Cullen starting at CB than any of our incoming guys starting at safety. If Michael Williams improves a lot and Vlad is good to start, then I might change my tune on TW, but otherwise, I'm sticking to my guns.

I am glad he named everyone there. He did a pretty good job of answering questions in a manner where they cannot be taken out of context. Edit: He's back on there answering questions if anyone has something they want to know.......

" Just to let you know....I think you will be a great one at Michigan! How are the guys who enrolled a couple weeks ago adjusting to being in college? The rest of the team doing anything to help them transition to college football and college in general? they are doing good they are participating in our voluntary 7 on 7" I notice the Freep left that one out...

Vlad is very impressive on how he answers these questions. He is obviously smart and knows to be vague. I loved the line about the voluntary 7 on 7's!
