This week has seen a lot of upsets and ranked teams getting beaten.
Any chance we make it to the top 25? Discuss!
would it matter?
For recognition, yes.
By whom? Who doesn't know who we are?
Seriously, it is irrelevant at this point.
It looks good if you're in the top 25 to recruits, potential fans, students, etc.
WE'RE FUCKING MICHIGAN. WE DON'T NEED ANY EXTRA REASON TO LOOK GOOD. OUR HELMETZ HAS WINGS
I just up-voted both of your posts because Keyboard Cat.
In terms of an actual contribution, I think that you bring up good points here. I'm generally in the "please don't rank us!" camp because my brain associates being ranked with impending doom, but I suppose recruits would like to see their potential team to be ranked.
I'm with you. But overall I think being ranked gives more legitimacy to the program. Yes, Michigan most wins/best win %/etc, but being ranked is an indication that we're doing well. That's all.
Notre Dame probably will be.
a 1-2 team with two losses to unranked teams won't be ranked. They'll get a couple of votes, but that's it..
Sarcasm meter working? Or does it have weekends off?
DAMNIT, who's been fiddling with the dials again?
To be fair, that scenario is plausible enough that I didn't pick up the sarcasm either.
With a combination of the beating the no. 15 ranked team, and the media's unhealthy love and affection for ND, the answer to the equation is top 10. In the Lou Holtz poll they're numbers 1-25.
Anyways, yes, Michigan will be ranked. I am guessing 19 or 20 with the rash of losses to the lower ranked teams today (and no. 25 Miss. St. losing to LSU). Does it really matter? No, we were what, 17 when we started losing last year?
I predict they wil be ranked #24 right behind MSU at #23 and OSU at 21 or 22. They have played well and Notre Dame is always highly favored and ranked, so we will crack the Top 25.
No chance OSU will be ranked ahead of MSU in the new polls. With how many lower ranked teams lost, I think MSU will remain in the top 20. OSU will be unranked.
I can't see MSU remaining in the top 20 after losing by 18 points to an 0-2 team. They may well drop out entirely.
MSU was embarrassed by a bad team that's played poorly, whereas OSU was shown-up by a pretty good team that lost against Maryland (who lost a close one to West (by God) Virginia yesterday) on an unfortunate pick-six. MSU and OSU have essentially the same resume this year, with a trouncing of one weak team, an underwhelming win against another, and an ugly loss against a mediocre to decent team. All of this is to say that I could see OSU coming out ahead of MSU.
Actually, MSU outgained ND yesterday and held ND's offense pretty much in check (ND had less than 300 yards). Meanwhile, OSU played like dogsh*t against Toledo AND Miami. If OSU is still ranked after this weekend, I'll...do...absolutley nothing...but it would be a colossal joke.
But that's a classic example of yardage totals being deceptive. ND's offense pretty much did what it wanted for three quarters. It was denied one possession because of the kickoff return. In the fourth, it just sat on the ball and tried to kill clock. Meanwhile, MSU threw it like crazy and racked up a bunch of meaningless yards in the fourth quarter.
As for OSU, they're in a weird spot because of the suspensions. Voters might cut them slack for that.
Michigan: Top 25
Ohio State: Unranked
I thought we had problems with our passing....osu looked dreadful.
..game looked pretty good but yeah their passing game was terrible.
Any time you have less than 50 yards passing, using the word "terrible" is putting it nicely
situation at QB. Braxton Miller is not the panacea to their offensive woes. The O-line still can't run block.
We could be as high as #20. ASU, Miss. St, Auburn all lost and OSU and MSU could end up behind us.
OSU will def. be behind us now, MSU, I'm not so sure. I think they'll drop right ahead of us.
Clemson will be ranked ahead of us. I doubt we'll be higher than 24.
Again, I hope not. Not yet; still not there yet.
God no. We beat ND when we probably shouldn't have and we beat two MAC teams in solid but not HULK SMASH fashion. Slot us about 40. Rank the Illini instead. They beat a solid ASU and are also 3-0.
I completely concur, completely.
No, Completely^(Completely^x) where x >0 concur.
I think we actually do get the ranking, but agree that we haven't earned it yet. Our win over ND will eventually look good, but we have a long way to go if we're going to play with Illinois and Nebraska (not to mention Sparty and Northwestern). A steady progression on both sides of the ball and we could end up making things look interesting in the Legends Division... I don't relish the thought of playing Wisconsin this year, though...
I don't get this whole "earned it" thing. Most of the ranked teams haven't... It's the nature of the polls this early (pointless). I agree that Illinois should get a better ranking. But I see no downside or anything unfair about us breaking the top 25 (or even 20) at this point.
Why is Illinois more deserving than UM? Do you think ASU is better than ND? I don't. Illinois was outgained by about 100 yards versus ASU and only had two drives of note in the first quarter. They were pretty much just as "lucky" in their win against ASU (way overrated) as we were against ND (somewhat overrated).
I can't argue with you. I honestly don't know anything about ASU aside from their ranking and what I watched of the game yesterday flipping between it and two others.
But from what I've seen of Ilinois (not a lot) they just seem to be clicking better than us at this point... Or anyone in the BT aside from Wiscy.
I relish the thought of playing Wisconsin, because that means we would be at the very least 10-2 and playing in the B1G championship game. There is nothing bad about that.
Yes, it makes me nervous for our team to be ranked now, although we certainly will be. I think reflection on the EMU game will give us some creeps. Maybe it was just a let-down offensively, but we had to rely on Denard's running way too much for EMU and the passing was cringe-worthy. The SDSU will tell us alot more, I think. I also think it will not be a fun week in practice for UM.
I noticed you mentioned the Alot.
I completely agree with this. If Denard can get back to hitting most of his open receivers, then we will keep winning most of our games. But for the time being, we have not played like a Top 25 team. Lots of good signs, but we still need to prove ourselves.
I agree that Michigan has not looked good enough to be ranked yet, but the same applies to several teams that are/were ranked before this weekend.
Michigan was "ranked" 26th in both the AP and Coaches' poll coming into the weekend. Losses by Auburn, Arizona State and Mississippi State will drop them out of the polls so UM should be no lower than 23rd. I think OSU will also drop out of the poll and MSU might be placed behind UM (we both beat two cupcakes and UM beat ND while MSU lost to ND) as well, so I could see UM possibly ranked as high as 21st this week.
#26 last week and the #21, #22, #25 teams lost (AP)
And #15 and #18 lost.
Most likely not. Going 3-0 against unranked teams is only newsworthy if you're Notre Dame or a Florida school. If you're anybody else, the pollsters could care less.
Not that it matters. I don't really care about rankings right now.
It is a certainty. Not saying we are a legit top 25 team yet, but we will be 23-25 at least this week.
We're ranked 26 as of the present. A lot of teams slotted just ahead of us lost, ergo we ought to be ranked next week.
We were ranked 26 in both polls before today's action. Given the number of losses by teams in the lower end of the poll, it's pretty safe to say we'll be in the top 25. Also, ND's performance today is going to give us a little more credibility.
The chances that we drop from 26 to 40 after a respectable win are slim. Also, the first three teams that we faced are as good as most other programs have played at this point. There have been a few matchups of top-flight teams, but not many.
Welcome back to the rankings, people . . . .
I think Illinois jumps to between 23 and 17. Michigan enters as 25. Michigan State and Ohio St. drop out. Nebraska moves down 2 or 3 spots.
5 of the 15-25 teams lost. Notre Dame and Western Michigan both had impressive wins. Most of the other unranked teams receiving votes lost or had ugly wins this week. I don't see any way that Michigan, Illionois, USC and Georgia Tech aren't going to end up in the top 25 this week; top 25 after week 3 is still meaningless though.
Will we be ranked... most definetly
Should we be.... nope
My thoughts exactly
Who should be?
Go through the list of teams and pick out the ones that would probably beat us more than 50% of the time. Now remove Georgia and ND from that list. We're probably in the 30-40 range at that point.
This is ridiculous. How on earth can you tell we are probably in the 30-40 range? We are 3-0 with a win over a very talented Notre Dame team. There are definitely not 30 teams with a better record that have played the competition we have. As much as everyone thinks it to be true, a tough loss is not better than an ugly win.
You're making the claim- you go through them and make the list.
We are not a top 25 team yet. Next week is going to be tough. Hillman is a beast so I am not feeling good about that game right now. If we beat SDSU then yeah top 25.
GT definitely doesn't deserved to be ranked.
But they're a 3-0 team with blowout wins from a BCS auto qualifier conference. Right now that's as good of a claim as any team ranked between 20 and 25.
we will be around 22/23. the win looks good on paper so that along with a lot of top 25 loses put us up there. not sure we deserve it yet but that's where we will be
If we win next week we will. It would be great heading into East Lansing undefeated!
"make crack the top 25"?
hoping that's a typo...which still is not good
My prediction of the AP's rankings:
Denard Robinson #22
University of Michigan #79
Let's just win this week...as a Wolverine older than I'd care to admit the thought of getting excited about being ranked is just really, really strange...used to be falling out of the top 10 was catostrophic...let's get back to that
..point we've been ranked early the last two years and look where that's gotten us. This program's got a lot more to prove before it can be said it's back legitimately and belongs in the top 25. Beating SDSU and the gophers at home needs to happen to show they can take care of business. A road win at Ryan stadium would certainly be a boost. But I think the hump is in East Lansing. Once that monkey has been spanked then I think people really start to look at the program differently.
Once that monkey has been spanked then I think people really start to look at the program differently.
I know that I will definitely look at the program differently after they "spank the monkey".
the rankings will take care of themselves. Let's beat someone that counts and then being ranked will be the reward.
Someone that counts = MSU, Iowa, Ohio..all the other B1G teams that have smashed us the past few years.
The rankings that count are posted after the bowl games.
Nope, we'll wake up 0-0 in the B1G tomorrow.
I'd guarantee it, we were ranked 26 this past week and with ND beating a 17th ranked State, it makes our win look even better. I'd guess that wed be between 22-25.
As promised, pizza party at my apartment to celebrate this monumental achievement!!!
i think so, but i'm not as sure as some of the people in this thread.
Yeah we should be ranked #......wait what kind of pizza?
We might be 3-0, but some teams like Clemson and Illinois got their third wins against ranked teams this week and may leap frog us into the top 25. I still think we get in, but around 23-25.
with Illinois. ASU looked pretty good in their game last week vs Missouri.
I have no problem saying Illinois and Clemson are both better than Michigan right now.
Clemson and Illinois both deserve to be ranked ahead of us. Georgia Tech is a toss up, only because of success the last couple years.
Remember Michigan does tend to get overranked. Not to the same extent of Notre Dame but still somewhat so we're probably going to be put into the top 25.
I'd prefer to be unranked until next week.
Will the EMU victory move us up, at least in the public universities category?
It does matter to the program because every streak needs to start somewhere. I was just reading that Ohio has been ranked in the top 25 since 2004 (and risk falling out for the first time since). We all know this won't be a national championship year but to make it into the top 25 and stay there is a big deal. All in all it matters
We shouldn't have been ranked last year, but we were. We will be ranked. We don't deserve but we will take it. Hoke probably won't be happy about it, because Hoke recognizes the long way UM has to go to get better. One day we will deserve the ranking, but not today.
Hoke will be pissed about being ranked? Are you fucking kidding me? They might not admit it but being ranked matters to the coach, to the players, to recruits and to most fans. It doesn't matter if we "deserve" it or not.
I just don't get the fans who don't want us to be ranked? Why? Will something terrible happen to the team if we are ranked? Is there anything negative about being ranked? Will SDSU be a better team because we are ranked? Some of you need to man the fuck up and stop posting like little bitches.
but we probably shouldn't be yet.....
I really don't think we're going to get an accurate gauge of our team until we go on the road against NW and MSU.
I don't want to be ranked this week. It simply gives even more motivation to a team like SDSU.
I am sure we will get ranked when we deserve to be.
What has Michigan proved? We beat Western, a 1-2 ND team, and Eastern. Nothing in the three games I've seen proves to me that we belong in the top 25. If we do get in, it is because of name only.
As I have been saying all along, the wrong team from Michigan was ranked. Sparty should fall from the rankings, leaving at least one spot open. Michigan is more than deserving based on right now.
Until it is proven different, Michigan is one of the best 25 teams in the country. The rankings should reflect that.
Yes we will and should be ranked! We will be at 20th, or 21st. MSU will be out, and behind us because they lost to an 0-2 team that we beat. OSU will be out, and behind us, because they lost to an 0-1 team, and looked like shit. Plus they almost lost to Toledo last week. Auburn, ASU, and Mississippi State will not be ranked. Notre Dame will not be ranked, because they have two losses, and Miami MIGHT make #25 because they have a lost to Maryland, and Maryland lost yesterday to West Virginia. Florida State, and South Carolina will drop, but still be ranked, and everybody else will move up a little with Oklahoma grabbing, if not all, most of the first place votes.
Illinois will also be ranked 22nd- 24th.
Rankings mean nothing.
You know what means something?
