That would be wild.
this may be of some local interest
That would be wild.
Which running back? I assume Fitz if he is back and healthy? He would deserve it in my opinion.
or Deveon Smith. Maybe even Shallman, in which case he could keep the number when he inevitably moves to DL
I wish it was against someone else, but there isn't anyone else, so what the hell. Last time we played that game I went home very happy.
When is Dave Brandon announcing throwback uniforms for this game?
on all the brand recognition cough, cough, marketing opportunities that we could see for this game. Tom Harmon jerseys came first to mind.
The Game will be great, but I'd prefer that Ol' 98 remain retired. I think Harmon's achievements deserve to be recognized at a plane higher than the others. We can live without using one of the 99 numbers.
about almost every legend we have honored so far. We know they were "special" thats why they are being honored as Legends!
I'm sure the Wisstert brothers were great, but they weren't Harmon. Neither was Jerry Ford, who I assume had his number retired because he became President.
I'm sure someone has made this argument before. However, I still hold to it and I think it is worth repeating here.
If it's even half as good of a game as last time, it'll still be tremendously tremendous.
Just as long as it's the second half
Last ND night game was a huge success. I'm not a fan of 3:00 starts for other games especially weaker Big10 and directional school rivalries - but once a year let the day long tail gating commence!
As much fun as the last one was, I hate the idea of having UTL with Notre Dame after they dropped us from scheduling.
I like the idea, simply for the fact that I think Michigan wins next year. It'll be nice to embarass Notre Dame one last time on a big stage.
Enough with the "throwback" errr "throw forward" errrr "throw sideways" unforms already. Let Michigan be MICHIGAN, fergodssakes.
I KNEW it.
Last week I gambled on this and booked a non-refundable hotel room for that night. Woo-woo.
THE_KNOWLEDGE tip you off on this?
Nobody, and I mean nobody, will ever be great enough to wear #98. Tom Harmon was the greatest player in college football history, period.
How much film of pre-WWII college football have you watched? How about 19th century college football? Sounds like an overly definitive statement.
Go look up some of his highlights. He did everything. Passed, rushed, caught passes, played defense, kicked, punted, returned kick & punts. Tom Harmon was THE football player. He should have won two Heismans. He nearly did, finishing 2nd behind iowa's kinnick in 1939. Tom deserved the 1939 one but kinnick was a great player too.
Just because an Athlete today doesn't kick, pass, run and catch doesn't mean that they are unable to. That was about the time world war 2 started so I imagine football wasn't a priority for all the young men at that time.
The US wasn't even in the war yet when Tom played. He played here from 1938-1940. The US became involved in 1941.
all #98......the whole team.....the whole team.....the whole team!
That's just a huge mindfuck
To eliminate us losing this game like the game in September, if we just take a knee when we are in the redzone on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down and kick a FG on 4th, we should win 18-7.
I'm just guessing on this, but will all of the 2013 UTL Tribute jerseys have a big tear taken out of the chest?
Alternate unis with the right sleeve torn off:
Of all the formerly retired numbers, 98 is going to be the strangest to see on the field. It seems that more than a specific position, the player has to be the best on the field.
Nothing against the guys on the team, but I don't think we've got anyone on the team that is deserving of it. Jake Ryan's probably our best player and he's already got a legend jersey.
Jake Ryan can't wear two jerseys though can he? One number on front and another on back? Devin Gardner possibly? I know someone else suggested it, but he seems to be the favorite for the best player on the team next year.
I weep for this game going away. This is what so damn good about college football and everything thats right about it.
ND is running away from this rivalry like scared little choir boys. Wish we didn't reward them with UTL again. Should've done for Nebraska.
Yah because you have laid the wood to us the last little while. We aren't scared.
Wipe away history? Gotcha
I am not denying the losses, but its not like you ass hammered us. 12 points total in 3 games on last second drives is hardly anything to shake at.
And if my Aunt had balls she'd be my Uncle. Denard did throw those pics, you lost the game.
Uhh we (the big ten) don't have any tv contracts with CBS
The CBS announcers are horrendous. All we would hear during the game is them talking about what the 2 teams would do against a "far superior Ess-Eee-Cee opponent"
Would be great to see Quentin Washington get it. Fifth-year Senior, great story of perseverence, looks to be the best d-lineman on the team next year.
98 is the one number I never wanted to see un-retired.
I'm all for the Legends jersey, but ol' 98, the number that no one wanted, should be the one number no one can get.
It is unusual that there is no mention of the Harmon family's involvement? I can't remember the press releases for the Wistert #11 or the Oosterbaan #47, or the Ford #48 or the Kramer #87. Were the families mentioned? Certainly, the families were all involved in the ceremonies, without exception. Desmond was there in 2011 for #21. It will be a little weird and sad if Mark Harmon is not there. Anybody know if that "consent" has been successfully negotiated?
about 9 months to contact them. I think they'll be fine
Now, I don't mean to pick on you, but just think about what that would mean. Because it is not just a matter of Mark Harmon getting a two-week advance on a plane ticket.
For the record, let's recall that the children of Tom Harmon and actress Elyse Knox include son Mark (daughter-in-law Pam Dawber) and daughters Kristin Nelson (widow of deceased star Ricky Nelson) and Kelly Harmon (the famed WRIF model. Baby!). And the grandchildren include Tracy Nelson and the musical twins of "Nelson." And it (the Nelsons in particular) is a really complicated family history that is way beyond the scope of college football uniforms and numbers.
But the one way that you NEVER negotiate is to announce the decision and then ask for permission to do it. Unless it is a total lost cause, in which case that IS the story that I wondered about. If there has been a completed negotiation with the Harmon family, then they could have mentioned it.
Ahhh, my memories of the Kelly Harmon WRIF ads... Baby!
"The success and acceptance of the Desmond Howard 'Legend' recognition led to conversations with the family members who had retired jerseys, several of whom were never recognized or celebrated in the appropriate manner," said Brandon. "The Ford, Kramer and Oosterbaan families want to see their family member honored in this way. We have yet to have any discussions with the Wistert or Harmon families. This program is about tradition and legacy and this is a unique way to recognize these great Wolverines." (emphasis mine)
But the quote also makes it seem likely that discussions with the Harmon family would occur.
Maybe Mark Harmon is still ticked over Schembechler's defense planting him on the ground and knocking him out of the game on his first series against us in '72?
i don't think anyone can ever fill the shoes of a michigan man that received a standing ovation from an ohio state crowd. handing this jersey out might be a bit much. i also hope these jerseys aren't awarded for the sake of being awarded. i hope they're earned, especially in the case of ol' 98, by players who truly deserve the honor.
I hope Lewan comes back and wears 98
Basically, OL have to be numbered 50-79 according to current NCAA rules (http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/FR12.pdf). This was why Gerald Ford's number could not be allocated to an offensive lineman.
Convenient timing for this announcement after the psd hike earlier in the week. Deflect the criticism with a huge benefit to the recently impacted psd holders.
Surprised he didn't announce this before the "donation" increase.
Harken back to 2011 when we tailgated for 12 hrs before the UTL game. 8am first drink down.. Paced myself surprisingly and made it through the game with clear memories. Looking forward to next year!
Don't underestimate ND next year-they gonna surprise alot of people.
Tom Harmon-THE GREATEST WOLVERINE THERE EVER WAS!
