Michigan Physical Defense Causes Central Michigan Sad/Bad "Breaks"

Submitted by Dailysportseditor on

No one seems to want to report the sad/bad "breaks" incurred by Central Michigan in yesterday's game against Michigan.  MLive reported last night that the Michigan Defense (1) knocked CMU starting quarterback Cody Kater out of the game with a broken collarbone and (2) knocked CMU starting running back out of the game with a broken ankle.

This is obviously very sad news for the players themselves, their families, and teammates.

The "breaks" significantly impact CMU's future offensive options as well as their depth.  Here's wishing them as rapid a recovery as each can safely achieve.  Michigan followers certainly can appreciate such bad "breaks."

The one that Tipton was injured on was a goal-line play, and he was stopped short of the goal line.  I actually thought it was his shoulder, because it was hit pretty hard, but I seemed like he just twisted his ankle, and then someone fell on it.  As for the collarbone, it was a regular play where the quarterback scrambled and hit the ground and was hit.  He's a duel threat QB, and that stuff happens.

I do not think Michigan was specifically targeting these players.  Not because "I think its impossible for Michigan to do anything bad, ever", but because that it did not look like that at all.  I'd give it a 0% chance of Michigan intentionally injuring these players.  The nature of the injuries didn't sugest it, and also, why would we do that against a team like Central Michigan? I think how the injuries happened is all you need to know here.

As for Central, I hope Tipton and Kater get better, as it seems like they have a good team, and Tipton has some great potential.  I wish them luck in the MAC, and I shake my head at you, sir, for this post.

I'm curious why the post incurred such a personal response as "I shake my head at your, sir, for this post."  All I reported was news about the specific serious injuries caused by the physical Michigan Defense, as reported by MLive.  I hadn't read any coverage of these specific injuries in any of the many stories on MGoBlog or any of the numerous sites covering Michigan football, including national sites.  I'm sure if the injuries were suffered (as they have been) by Michigan's quarterback or running back, they would have been part of the top stories of the game.  If other physical defenses like Alabama or OSU had caused such injuries, I'm sure they would have been front page news of their game coverage.  I just think this represents a journalistic oversight of significance and that's why I posted the news.

We have our own injuries to worry about and players that need our well wishes.  Although, I hate to see players get concussed since the effects can be so tragic (See GVSU QB & Junior Seau et. al).

Incidently, no one has been talking about that Targeting Rule that was enforced a few times this past weekend.  The rule, in my opinion, is poorly written.  It requires intent to target the head but video evidence doesn't show that kind of proof.  I know Hoke and Co. are educating the players on sure tackling but the fast pace of the game and young players... well mistakes happen.

for them, slaughtered and left short handed. Originally I wanted to destroy them because Enos was an ex MSU player but I didn't want them to have casualties at all.

You gotta feel bad for the players and the one to blame for this are the ADs.   Instead of games between evenly matched teams, big schools want the home ticket sales so they pay out to the smaller schools who are desperate for the payday.  Then you put teams with smaller/weaker lines against teams who are bigger, stronger and faster and you get kids hurt.  The way Hoke and co are building Michigan now, MAC teams are going to be outclassed in all aspects of the game and you will have injuries.  2 major injuries like this is probably higher than you'd get on average, but it's still beating up on weaker opponents and risking their entire season just to get a payday.

Right, so the ADs should stack their schedules with top tier opponents, because look how K-State demolished NDSU and how Oregon State beat up poor Eastern Washington.....

It's football.  Guys get hurt no matter the disparity in competition.  I'd love to see a more compelling schedule, but without a preseason the first game should be MAC level.

I think most people already knew these things when they happened during the game.

Might be a blessing in disguise for Tipton. Less carries in college usually means more carries later on that you can get paid for. Obviously that requires you are drafted, but CMU is good for a couple of NFL players every few years and this kid made it on a Doak Walker watch list from a MAC school. Surgery, rehab and then maybe share carries next season with whoever breaks out in his absence. With a freshman QB, they might have worn him out this season.

The Wolverines certainly understand how these injuries can impact the fortunes of the team.

Nobody wants to see these dedicated, talented student-athletes get injured.

Best of luck to them and their team.

Last year we got whipped by Alabama and lost Countess in the process.  It just sucks, there are no two ways about it.  I feel bad for CMU.

Journalistic critiques are easier to take seriously if they aren't littered with unnecessary scare quotes. That said, this really sucks for CMU. Poor Chips.
