Michigan to Paint #GOBLUE Hashtag on Field for Mott Spring Game http://mgob.lu/UMSpringGame
Pretty cool idea, it ties in with a contest that the Michigan football twitter page is doing.

So which part of it is tacky? Obviously, most people don't like the #. Would everyone be cool with a simple 'Go Blue' on the field? Would any other slogans be okay on the field?
Hail.
Anything in twitter-speak is tacky on its face. Hashtags have no place in the Big House, let alone on the field. A simple "Go Blue" would of course be significantly less offensive to the senses, although writing much of anything on the field still makes me less than joyous.
Let's quit trying to update with this kind of bullsh#t and be content with the way things are... this is Michigan fergodssakes
"Long time listener, first time caller."
If this is just for the spring game, I think it's a fine idea. However, I'm not really a fan of putting anything else on the field during the regular season(including the Big Ten logo).
I dont like it.

There'd be mass insurrection in the streets. Ann Arbor Torch & Pitchfork would have to set up sidewalk carts outside Brandon's office.
I don't mind it. It promotes nothing but the school, which is what matters. It's not a corporate logo or an advertisement or anything like that.
I knew someone would say that, but I completely disagree. Everyone who wants to be on twitter is already on it, and no one will read that hashtag and start using twitter because of it.
Saying #GOBLUE promotes twitter is like saying a Nike ad promotes wearing shoes. No, people already wear shoes, Nike wants them to wear Nike shoes. People are using twitter, we might as well have them use it for Michigan's benefit.
...It sounds like they're going all out: Twitter contests and a Twitter feed during the game. Yes, it's focused on pure promotion of Michigan football, but at the same time, it's indirectly promoting Twitter and Twitter usage. There's no side stepping that. And yes, people will absolutely join Twitter over this as well as go on Twitter more than they normally do. This is the closest thing to promoting Twitter as you can get without saying "We're promoting Twitter!"
Agree to disagree I guess. I don't see why M would have any interest in promoting Twitter, just promoting Michigan on Twitter.
I also see this as analogous to any organization saying "Like us on facebook." That doesn't promote facebook, because the only people who will do it are regular facebook users. But it does promote the organization, through facebook.
Like I said before, it's an indirect promotion of Twitter. With your example, like it or not (no pun intended), a company saying "Like Us on Facebook" is in a way, promoting Facebook. There's no logical way you can prove otherwise.
Like you, I do think Michigan is doing it for themselves only, and I'm not saying Michigan is overtly marketing for Twitter, or that they even give a rat's ass about Twitter. All I'm saying this is akin to me driving to work in a Dodge. I'm only concerned with getting to work on time, but at the same time, without realizing it, I'm promoting Dodge while doing it. That's all.
So, you're right, I'm right, we're all right. End of story.
This is supporting Twitter in the same manner watching a video on mgoblue.com supports the company that created the video player, or buying box seats at Michigan Stadium supports all of the companies that helped built them.

I believe it's all a plan to promote the brand with increased social media buzz
No problem with it at the Spring Game...but if I see that damn hash tag on the field during the regular season...BOOM!

It's obviously being done to raise some kind of awareness or get attention. In which case, doing it during a real game would make much more sense.
Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if this starts showing up on the uniforms as well as playing surfaces.
Perhaps we need to start reminding President Coleman & the Regents that Brandon is the athletic director, not the marketing director.
As a student, I am typically fine with the changes (see: piped in music, uniforms, etc.) but this is going too far. This is ruining the aura of the Big House.

Aside from not really liking the idea that twitter must be in every part of my life, I think it's just plain tacky. As long as it's just the spring game, whatever...
If this is just for the spring game festivities and following lax match then I'm ok with it. That way people will tweet about the lax program and get the word out there. If its there against Air Force then I'll have a bone to pick with someone.

I'm totally good with it. It's one thing to want to uphold tradition - it's another to pretend like you're not living in the present.
People are going to tweet about the game. They already use the #GoBlue hashtag. Why shouldn't the University own it?
Of course, I'm biased - I work at a digital advertising agency...
It would look pretty cool if it didn't have the hashtag in front of it. If it just said GoBlue then I wouldn't mind even seeing it permanently.
