Michigan (or general College Football) viewing in Bangkok, Thailand

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

Ok, this may be a long shot, but hoping that at least one member of the MGoCommunity has some advice.

I'll be in Bangkok, Thailand when Michigan plays MSU on 10/17 at 3:30 Eastern.  If my time accounting is correct, that will be 5:30 AM on Sunday, October 18th, Bangkok time.  Does anyone know of any bars/restaurants that may cater to Americans wanting to watch some college football?  I tried the Michigan Bar Locator under "Useful Stuff" and a google search and found nothing I'm confident in.

*Having never travelled to Asia before, I'm just making the assumption that the hotel won't have ESPN or ABC.  For you world travelers, is that assumption correct or is there a chance I'll be able to watch from the comfort of my room?  I'll be staying at a Hilton branded property if that matters....

Okay serious answer--a lot of FBS games are on Armed Forces TV, which most SEA cable providers carry. But there's only one game per time slot and so it might be anything.

Streaming may be your best bet.

I was in Bangkok last year and was able to stream the Michigan v Rutgers game on my iPad ( in hind sight I wish I hadn't). Wifi in big hotels has plenty of bandwidth to get a good connection.

Not directed at farkinwall...We get it! It's your first trip overseas, and you're going to be that jackass American asking them to turn off cricket for American football. You can use a vpn, steam it, or enjoy being in a unique place. You farging corcksorking iceholes!

I live in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and we are one hour ahead of Bangkok.

Whenever there is a game of College Football or NFL  I would go to firstrow.eu and select AM. Football and they will list down games that you can stream.

Also if you are using an iPhone or an iPad, you can install "World TV Plus" and "Global TV HD" where they have Big Ten Network, PAC-12, Fox Sports 1 and some ESPN channels. I watched all the games aired on BTN without problem on my iPhone and have the other games on my laptop. Just that you will need good wifi or data on your phone. The quality is very good too.

For Northwestern game this weekend, I am excited that I would be able to watch it on my iPhone with superior quality and clarity. Just that somehow I need to plug in the earphones so that I can hear the commentator.

I am a UM Class of 2004 alum and have been reading this blog for 1 or 2 years now. Love this site and everything's written, esp the recruiting parts. Thanks everybody and Go Blue!

No matter how big and perfect they are, no matter how beautiful her face is, and certainly no matter what she says, do yourself a huge favor and take THREE STEPS BACK and observe her overall proportions. Specially, scrutinuze the overall size of her hands and feet, and the relative size of her shoulders as compared to her hips. Do this with dicipline and diligence and you'll be able to spot 'em like a Kalahari Bushman tracking a wounded antelope by the light of a full moon. Some swear by the seemingly infalable "Adam's Apple Test." Don't believe the hype -- unless you really don't mind the inevitable result of its failure (not that there's anything wrong with that). No amount of surgical tomfoolery can alter the mannish proportions that you need to become adept at spotting amidst an almost impossibly high level of titilating stimulus. They're a cunning adversary, believe me when I tell you. Throw in 10-15 Beer Changs (bad idea btw), them playing close press coverage, your head awash with erotic lore of the exotic Far East, and they has a decided schematic advantage. But, if you trust your cues and your eyes, and never let the little head do the thinking, you'll be ok! Good luck, and Go Blue!

can we ban people asking questions like this?

I've been all over the world, and have never asked the board 'how to watch game in XYZ'.  You figure it out.  Your plan never works out.  Shit internet, jetlag, you're going out to actually see the city you're in instead of eating club sandwiches watching american football in a 5* hotel or an expat irish pub. Figuring it out takes about 3 mins on google.  Or DL a torrent later.  Shit's not difficult. If you're having this hard of time with watching a fb game, maybe international travel isn't for you if it's not on the company dime.

There'll be other NW games, and you'll remember being in BK more than some random NW slapdick game.  There are like 3-4 games a year per team that are actually worth watching.

As an international Michigan Fan I'm always streaming the games, especially on the go. I would recommend the following sites:

1- if on ABC or ESPN : ESPNPLAYER.com   - PAID service where u can just subscribe for one game or week if u want

2- if on BTN : http://international.btn2go.com - PAID service same as espnplayer

3- on either you can use any of the free streams (example first row sports): http://firstrowusa.eu

Now your other issue is internet speed, if hotel internet is good enough then just use that, otherwise i recommend you buy a dongle and sim for your laptop (from any mobile provider), or just buy a 4G data sim for your ipad or smartphone and download the app of espnplayer or btn2go (note I usually have issues with accessing free streams on mobile browsers!)

The only games I ever have a problem viewing are those on Fox TV and that was only this season with the UTAH game!

On the other hand when it is a game at notre dame (which won't happen anytime soon) those are provided as a free stream on NBCsports.com

Hope this helps..

I happen to live in Bangkok and this is what I do:

If you happen to be a UM alum, the university provides a free VPN service for alumni and retirees, which is the fastest VPN service out there; find it and install it on your laptop (it will not work on mobile devices, AFAIK). If you're not, just hire a vpn service for a month (but make sure you configure EVERYTHING before leaving the US), I believe you can get 1-month service for about $5 (or use the free trial if possible). I'd recommend strong VPN. Tunnel bear works, but not always and is not as fast as strong VPN, but it is simple to install and there's a free version. Maybe get both?

If you have cable (which, who doesn't?), make sure you have your provider's login credentials handy. The game will be on ABC/ESPN, so you can log into their web site (ESPN3) and "activate" your device (if you're watching on an ipad) or log in directly into their site with your laptop.

Most properties now have different "tiers" of internet service in South East Asia. Make sure you buy the fastest, it usually runs up to $50. I'm not sure what the Hilton does.

I'll be traveling, otherwise I wouldn't mind hosting a game viewing party.

You're lucky the game is not on BTN. As I indicated on a previous post, that is a piece of dog shit. Runny dog shit.

Good luck!!!

@FormAFarkingWall

I'm an expat living in BKK.

I'm gonna ask around at a few places on Sukhimvit. There used to be a Manchester United bar that was open 24h. If there's still there I might be able to get them to put the game on a TV.

Do you have a local cell phone #?

Seems like we get this question every week.   Maybe we should set up a sticky thread.   Good to see so many globetrotters among the alums  ;o)

Internet streaming links

Usually there will be popups to begin.  Give a little time to load, then click on the blue "x" in the upper left of the popup and a blue dot in the upper right.  And presto.
