Michigan (or general College Football) viewing in Bangkok, Thailand

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

Ok, this may be a long shot, but hoping that at least one member of the MGoCommunity has some advice.

I'll be in Bangkok, Thailand when Michigan plays MSU on 10/17 at 3:30 Eastern.  If my time accounting is correct, that will be 5:30 AM on Sunday, October 18th, Bangkok time.  Does anyone know of any bars/restaurants that may cater to Americans wanting to watch some college football?  I tried the Michigan Bar Locator under "Useful Stuff" and a google search and found nothing I'm confident in.

*Having never travelled to Asia before, I'm just making the assumption that the hotel won't have ESPN or ABC.  For you world travelers, is that assumption correct or is there a chance I'll be able to watch from the comfort of my room?  I'll be staying at a Hilton branded property if that matters....

I travel a lot to Asia. I found a UM game in Beijing once, but nowhere else. Also recall the kick-off will be at 3:30 am Bangkok time. And the only thing happening in Bangkok at 3:30 am is NSFW...

Actually, 4:30 a.m.
Good luck! I was in Bangkok during the 2003 UM-OSU game for our first adoption. I tried, but could not find the game. On subsequent trips, the closest I've been able to find is a Stanford vs. PSU women's volleyball game on ESPN Asia of all channels.

I'm sure we could come up with the funding for it...an international or travelers section would be awesome.

Something that allows M fans to check in and add/rate their favorite Michigan bars around the country so people knew where to go.

Definitely a better ticket sharing/selling board.

It's almost 2016, let's get with it.

Do we really need posts regarding every country on earth? We get it that people travel. Get a slingbox.
There is literally no better place on the Internet for questions, like these. MGoBloggers have a vast wealth of knowledge and like helping each other out. You didnt have to click the thread if you were not interested.

Exactly.  You are not going to easily find this info anywhere else.  Google is just going to return a thousand hits that have "Bangkok" and "Michigan" keywords in them.  The odds of one of them having what you are looking for are very low.

Asking a worldly, knowledgeable, passionate, well-traveled fanbase on MGoBlog where a Michigan game can be viewed in a foreign country on the other side of the globe at 3:30 AM is 100% appropriate.  It's the exact kind of thing you would expect to be a sweet spot for MGoBlog.  Probably more than anywhere else.

There are too many people running around here as the self-appointed police of everything that everyone posts.  Good grief, dial back the Control Freak act and let the Mods handle it.

Soi Cowboy

All the places there will be open all night/morning. Several places have TVs and you can definitely throw a few extra baht at a ladyboy to put the game on.

And you think I'm joking...

My wife and I miss most UM-OSU games because we take an annual trip to Phuket (via BKK) at Thanksgiving. I've yet to find a place to watch the game. But I admit we haven't tried real hard.

We did stumble across the OSU-MSU Big Ten championship game in 2013 on the TV in our villa. Ordered room service and watched over breakfast! Classic Good News/Bad News as I knew one of them would win/lose.

So if it's on a major network there is a chance, but in my experience it's tough to sort out ahead of time. Hotels never seem to have comprehensive TV listings.

There are plenty of sports bars with satellite for futbol, so you may get lucky. But the 2:30 am start will be your downfall. Legal closing time is well before 2:30.

The standard online viewing options are your best bet. Lot's of thread history with the How To.

PS - Contact the hotel and ask for their channel lineup. I would expect Hilton to have ESPN or ABC. If you can get their concierge email, they can answer your question. And should be able to tell you if you can get games live.

I was in china for the first game of the year. I got a slingbox from best buy so I could watch the game. It worked perfectly. Whether it works for you depends upon the strength of the internet you have when you are there. I can watch slingbox from just fine here but in china I needed to watch from a computer so did not stop often

Can't you stream it via ESPN app (assuming it will mostly likely be in ABC)? Or if you have Directv or have a friend with it, you can stream live TV on there as well.

Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know what the city is getting,

No seriously stream it.

And if you get to Phuket tell me if Rock Hard Cafe is still there.

I have a question that is stupid and not important at all, and it does not deserve its own thread. Therefore, I will randomly put it here.

Does anyone know what is going on with the "(Reply to #X)" link that goes at the top of each post here?  The link always goes to the correct comment for me, but the comment number listed is always wrong. For example, I will click a link on someone's comment that says "Reply to #5" and it will correctly go to the comment that the poster was replying to, but that comment will actually be #7, rather than #5. What in god's name is going on?

Note that ESPN Asia is now Fox Sports Asia in several of the markets.

In the past they would usually show the ESPN Thursday night game on Friday morning, and then one or two games on Sunday morning (between midnight and 10am or so). However, with the FSA takeover they began showing more of the Big 12 and Pac-12 games, due to their affiliation with Fox Sports USA.

With the Michigan vs. MSU being on ABC/ESPN and not the B1G, there is a very slim chance they will show it.

In fact, I am looking ahead in the FSA programming for Thailand on Sunday morning 18 October, and you get...ugh...a REPLAY of ND vs. Navy (a week late):

http://tv.foxsportsasia.com/

This all being said, in the Asian market there are three Fox Sports channels, so I would check the programming on all of those channels even right up until kick-off. You cannot always trust the online schedule.

Of course, as mentioned above, speak to any and all bars/sports bars in the main expat areas of BKK as well to check if they are showing the game(s).

Since you are staying at a Hilton property, email/call ahead and ask them about in-hotel programming. If they do not have the right sports channels, ask them/the concierge to recommend/find a place.

Also, your other option as noted above by several people is a Slingbox. With slingbox.com, you do NOT have to own a Slingbox, you just need to know someone who does and will allow you access via:

http://countryselect.slingbox.com/select_country/cs.php?next=http://newwatch.slingbox.com

during that weekend.

(At least that is the way I understand it works now...)

Bangkok, the most appropriately named capital in the world. I admire your school spirit in the face of your inevitable descent into moral turpitude, but I suspect at 4:30am you'll find yourself in the same position most of us would be in, looking at what you've just done and hating yourself for it, while wondering if you have enough money to pay for more, and not thinking about football at all.
